anyone want to guess how many posts this thread will get to?

Right on... No doubt. That's why I question why they use that word. Probably to drive an immediate response to purchase.

When I finally made the switch to Blu-ray last October, I got rid of my Extended Edition DVDs to get some Blu-rays. I will gladly pick up this set as long as the transfers are great.

I have read that Fellowship doesn't look bad but it looks pretty terrible for about half of its running time. The most egregious example lies in Gandalf and Bilbo's conversation at Bag End. I have yet to see a BD transfer look worse than that. Fellowship is my favorite of the trilogy and I was extremely pissed that it looked so terrible. The Two Towers looks great for the first 30 or so minutes and then it takes a nosedive. Return of the King looks great so that one may not even be redone, assuming any remastering is performed.

I have since traded in the theatrical editions for other BDs.

I wish the Blu-ray forum would go ahead for BD100's. All they'd need to do is just have firmware updates and this way the individual The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions can be on single discs instead of two BD50's.
Was extremely disappointed Dances with Wolves was relegated to a BD50 with low bitrate when it could've received a BD100. Hoping the same for Lawrence of Arabia and BEN-HUR.
You bet I'll be keeping the DVD set of the Extended Editions. Very nice packaging.

I have no problem with each film being spread out on two discs. I have a feeling that each film will be put on a single BD50, though, which will upset me. I mean, just look at the director's cut of Troy and Malick's cut of The New World.

All the special features will be in SD. I would love to see them in HD but I can understand if they don't especially if they were shot in SD and not on film. I guess I just don't understand an $80.00 price point for 3 BD's of catalog titles and a bunch of DVD's that I already have (except the docs) I never bought the third release on DVD. I just think the premium price should be lowered for only getting 3 BD's... I agree though, FINALLY EE's on BD!

To help encourage pre-orders/buying at launch by making people think it will be rare.

They should tell us the damn release date ... What's the suspense for?
And the price of $84 ($120) is unacceptable for a 9 to 7 year old movies.

Sure its a great movie and made billions of dollars but we have spent enough on this product.
If we bought Avatar Extended Collector's Edition Blu-ray for $25 why should LOTR trilogy be priced more than Avatar (3*25 = $75)

Amazon should increase the discount to $75, or else I am not buying this ridiculously priced item.

What the hell is a BD100? There's no such thing on the consumer market (yet) is there?

I'm surpised some are even considering this at such a rediculous price for what is essentially a repackage. Yes, you are getting the extended movies on blu-ray, but the rest of this set is DVDs of special features that are already out on DVD. Thats simply lazy. Don't give me what is already available in a format I don't want anymore. Give me new stuff or at least put the old stuff in HD on blu-ray. Plus, we all know another set is coming out down the road which will presumably have new feature so why drop so much money on this rediculous set. They are just repackaging the special features like they did with the Theatrical Edition release. Just like with that release they will release these individually a few months down the road. Why not just wait?

I don't think so...the next LOTR release will most likely be the ultimate, mega-box set which will come out when the Hobbit comes out - not in theaters but on blu ray...so i think there's quite some time until then...

Cook,

It all depends on what you want out of Lord of the Rings on home video. Personally, I don't need the two Hobbit films. The opening prologue in the Fellowship of the Ring is all the back story information I need. So, waiting for the mega-set might not seem so apt for some people.

This set, for me, is the definitive. Now, if Jackson were to do definitive director's cut that's a happy medium between the theatrical cuts and the extended cuts, I would gladly rebuy this trilogy one more time on Blu Ray.

But, I just don't see him doing that...especially since he's working on the Hobbit films. And we all know that those films will get extended cuts as well.

As for the special features, what the hell else do we really need? Those appendices add up to more than 12 hours of behind the scenes footage. Do we really need more than that in the mega-set?

There are no guarantees about what we might be getting in the future when it comes to these films. I'd get while the getting's good. The price is fine (do we really think that WB's going to upgrade those special features in HD when repackaging the existing DVDs appendices is much, much cheaper?)

My thoughts,... Just sayin,

0) I'm glad the Extended cuts are coming to Blu

1) I really do prefer the theatrical cuts. I owned both versions on DVD and having seen the Extended versions I always went back to the theatrical cuts because even the TC's were hella long for a movie. What I would really like is abridged, movie length, movies of these movies. Peter Jackson seems to think longer movies are better movies.

2) I'm glad I held onto my extended version DVDs. They look nice and have almost no resale value anyways and it's nice to have access to the "extra" scenes.

3) I think other blu ray versions of the Extended Editions are coming. Since the special features of this set are on DVDs (yuk. )

So.... I aint gonna order at least for now. If I can get this for $8 at Target on Black Friday then I will certainly pick it up.

Who was responsible for the extended cut?
