Exactly........Why cant they just get this one right by either a disc exchange or fix the problem before release (I would LOVE to see a delay in the release if it meant fixing this problem!).

It might be a good idea to actually contact WB about this, I don't know enough about it to do so, but others here are welcome to.

Petri is doing just that according to his post at AVS.

Thanks for the update. Maybe they'll clarify the issue. Or they could say there's no problem at all.

Yeah. I just want to make sure this is intentional, and not something quality control departments missed. I do like the new grade though, whatever the reason behind it.

"Peter and I began talking about LOTR on HD as far back as 2001 - during the making of the films. As we knew the film would eventually be released in some yet-to-be-determined HD format, we began planning The Lord of the Rings HD Box Set from the very beginning, nearly a decade ago."

"Our idea was to think and plan ahead, and actually set aside some of our best ideas and materials specifically for those future releases. In other words, studios are going to probably release a film on video iteratively anyway. Given that's an immutable fact, if you're going to ask the consumers to buy the title again - why not plan ahead to make it a real event with brand new, compelling content? As opposed to being left with having to scrape together meager bonus materials on a future re-release of a title."

"These are just a few examples, but eventually, this amassed into about 20 hours of ideas, and material we set aside for the Box Set to create this whole other experience someday. Over the years, Peter has mentioned the Box Set in various interviews, on the DVDs, in the media and to the fans - but as of yet, it still remains in the "to do" list, until the studio decides it's time."

"There has been a lot of interest in the release of the Extended Editions on BD, but right now, there honestly isn't anything to discuss. WHV is just concentrating on the theatrical releases at this point. What I do hope is that fans will eventually get to see the rest of the story on the Box Set - as it would be nice for it to see the light of day, to see it done and finally out in the world and on the shelf."

Fast forward to earlier this year and the word now is that this is a release to help get people excited for The Hobbit. It is obviously NOT the ultimate box set as was originally planned by Peter Jackson.

“What’s more, our sources are NOW telling us that WHV (Warner Home Video) (and their now in-house New Line label) is ALSO planning to release Peter Jackson’s long-awaited The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Editions on Blu-ray sometime this year. No kidding. We suspect that, now that The Hobbit films are finally about to begin filming, the studio is eager to get more product on store shelves to keep the franchise fresh in the minds of fans. The Extended Rings films on BD are the obvious choice for this year. Farther down the line, of course, there will be the obvious Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions of The Hobbit films, and sooner or later an “ultimate” box set of all the films with all new extras custom created by Jackson. Anyway, our sources tell us to expect some kind of official news on all this (re: Rings: Extended and Kubrick) from the studio in the next several weeks.“

This was a rush job pure and simple and an easy cash grab. They were/are betting some Lord of the Rings fans are like Star Wars fans and will buy anything, quality control be damned. Judging by some of you around here, they are right.

Here's the scene, provided by a friend, that everyone is so up in arms about.

After further thought, it does indeed look bad. I canceled my pre-order and will wait for an ultimate edition that has the fixed grading for Fellowship EE, the rest of the EEs of the trilogy, and the original theatrical Blu-rays.

I can't believe people are acting like this is the first film to have a modified color grade. Have you all seen the remastered Gladiator? I noticed everyone was too busy gushing about it's detail to notice the completely changed color scheme (much more so than here). If this is a problem, it's a larger problem concerning the remastering of catalog titles at large. As it stands, though, I think this release looks gorgeous.
I didn't have a problem with Gladiator. And I don't have a problem with what I'm seeing on the FOTR caps. It's different, not defective. People don't like it? Tough.

I am one of those fans. I will buy this and all future versions - and I will enjoy them, despite the fact that someone apparently f'd up this transfer (unless it was Jackson's intention to make this the national film of Ireland). However, I would be lying if I said that I was happy that Warner is more enthused about satisfying the Bottom Line than the myriad of fans, to many of which this is their favorite story. As I have said before, this isn't "Beerfest" - it is the jewel of their catalog, and you would think that the LotR transfer would get absolutely flawless treatment.

For those who believe this "issue" is exclusive to Fellowship's remaster:

So the official justification is "everyone else is doing it" so that makes it okay.

Not to sound like a mother, but if all your friends jumped off a bridge...

There is still no excuse, it is still ugly and it still needs to be fixed!
