From thedigitalbits-

"Now then, we've got ONE more quick Lord of the Rings Blu-ray update. Warner still hasn't provided answers to our questions about some of the finer technical details of the release, but they HAVE sent over revised cover art for the title this afternoon. As you can see, the words Limited Extended Edition have been replaced by simply Extended Edition. I'm told the inside of the packaging may change as well, so we'll post new images as they come in...

By the way, the studio tells me that Amazon pre-orders on the title are already exploding - so much so that Amazon's servers were tested pretty heavily yesterday handling all the transactions. Somehow, we're not surprised... "

Not true Jackson said the TE are the director cuts as far as he sees it. I also think we'll have new version in the future as he said he wanted to fix some of the CG of gollum in the first movie as it did not match the other moves.

Just curious, has anybody had this hit their Amazon 'Gold Box' yet?

Default the transfer better be top notch

Last year, I held off buying the theatrical cuts at the last minute after finding out about the PQ issues plaguing the films, especially The Fellowship of the Ring. This year, I'm really gambling on this preorder because I have a bad feeling that Warner's going to pull off another "Goodfellas" by literally handing us the same discs (but Extended cuts) all over again

Q: What's the definitive version of these films?

JACKSON: The theatrical versions are the definitive versions. I regard the extended cuts as being a novelty for the fans that really want to see the extra material.

I was going to get this edition but I think I'm going to wait for an uber edition with the TE, EE and whatever else they might come up with eventually.

I'm going to go cancel my pre-order.

That is why the EE discs say "select version" on them.... Oh wait, that was Alien. I don't remember now, but STILL it doesn't have everything from the books, so it isn't the "True/Definitive Version" in my opinion. As a fan and as a movie watcher, if they filmed it, I want it on the disc. Whether it is in the movie or the bonus disc matters not.

You will NEVER have a set that has everything from the books. These films are adaptations and as such Jackson and his team made creative decisions about what would be the best way to present these stories in the cinematic medium. Stick to the books if that's what you are looking for.

They shot six million feet of film. Good luck with that...

BTW... I'm not knocking the Extended Editions, I enjoy the extra material as much as the next fan. I'm also eager to see the Theatrical Editions again because I haven't seen them since they were theaters. As discussed above, they released a DVD set with both versions available via seamless branching. Hopefully we'll see the same thing on this set.

Yes, but there were several mistakes made as a result of seamless branching on those discs. For instance, on the extended cut dvd of FotR, for the added scene of the Hobbits singing in the 'Green Dragon', you can hear their singing starting on the exterior shot. On the limited edition dvd, you don't hear their singing until the inside shot. This is because they're taking the exterior shot from the Theatrical Edition, not the Extended Cut. There are many such mistakes on those editions, and I'd hate for a repeat of that. I very much appreciate separate releases for each version.

Interesting. I was unaware of that, but for my money it seems a small price to pay to not have to buy two different sets. That's both more money and more shelf space.

Seems like an easy fix too... all they'd have to do is have the cut point happen a little sooner where audio overlap wouldn't be an issue. Sure there would be some repeated footage on the disc but I'm sure Blu-ray could handle it.

Regardless, thanks again for the insight!

Regarding the EE and the TE, The Two Towers at least is a vast improvement over the theatrical edition. The backs story of Boromir and Faramir really adds a lot.
As far as the ROTK, the only way to see Saruman's demise is (unfortunately) in the EE. I always felt he should have been left in. So did Christopher Lee....

As far as the BD is concerned, I hope for WB's sake the quality is up to par - imagine the number of cancellations if the PQ is substandard?

Not sure about that, the single TEs came out 5 months the TE boxet was out. Any who, I think once the EEs are out, I will just buy the boxet without waiting for the single editions since I won't be able to wait any longer than this

They are flipper discs, so the EE for each movie is on one DVD. They are the versions I used with my portable DVD when I travel. I also liked the Botes documentaries that came with that edition.

I hope WB or PJ do some remastering work on these films... when Blu-ray was first introduced these were the films that I was most anticipating. I was somewhat dismayed when the reviews of FOTR TE came out with reference to mediocre PQ. If that remains the case with the EE then I'm not interested... I already own the EE DVD's... I'll stick with them if there isn't a noticable improvement in PQ over past efforts.

Strange... in the past I was looking forward to both Star Wars and LOTR on BD. Recently I've been kinda "Meh..." on both of them. I need to see the studios pull out all the stops and make these fantastic releases if I'm going to fork out for them.

I just heard from Bill and this is his current understanding:

"No, my understanding is that each film will be on a BD - so Discs 1 and 2 of the 4-disc DVDs will be converted to BD. And Discs 3 and 4 are essentially the same as they were in the 4-disc set - DVDs."

But he also stressed this:
"So 3 discs for each film - 1 BD and 2 DVDs. We'll know more for sure when Warner makes their official announcement in a few weeks."

The good news you wont have to get up and change the disc.

There goes my excitement. I will still buy this, but not at the currently listed $85.

I am damn pissed that these films wont be spread over two discs and that they are just simply repressing the old dvds instead of consolidating them into one giant bluray.

So are the Botes docs on the BD then? I assumed that disc 2 from the Limited Edition DVD sets would also be included, the disc that included the documentaries... now I'm super confused as to what this box will contain... Man I hope some questions are answered soon on this...

Those 2006 limited editions are the only place I have seen them, but it looks like they will be included with the BD EE's. It looks as though they were filmed with a high-definition camera, but the indication so far is that the special features with the Blu-ray EE release will be on regular DVD's.
