It looks as though they will be included. They contain alot of candid moments and more humor than the standard EE special features, but are not as organized. Last year around the time the theatrical versions were released, there was mention of completely new material to be included when the EE's would be released. So far, I have not seen any indication of previously unreleased material.

Yeah that's what I have heard as well, but according to Merrick97's post Bill Hunt stated there would be 1 BD and 2 DVD's for each film. And if that's the case, where would the Botes docs be put. Unless the statement is just more confusion coming from Warner, and the films will be 1 BD and 3 DVD's to account for the docs. I dunno, I just want it to be released so I can watch them, I've never seen those documentaries

That too was also when Guillermo Del Toro was scheduled to direct The Hobbit, since recent events, PJ probably WAY to busy to do anything with the set, the new material will be included in the Ultimate Set once released (fingers crossed)

If they cram the films onto one disc each, these transfers are all in so much trouble.

not necessarily, RotK looked pretty impressive on BD, it was over 3 hrs long and only took up 37GB of space on the disc... adding another 50 minutes will not chew up THAT much space to warrant degrading bitrates causing "crappy" quality in the PQ department

does the extended versions make these movies better?! I've never watched the extended cuts fearing they would be too slow and boring

and longer doesn't always mean better..

I personally prefer the Extended Cuts, but I'm a HUGE Tolkien fan. Some people prefer the theatrical versions because they are all 3 hrs + each. If you are just a casual viewer then the theatricals will probably be fine for you, but if you are really interested in the story, and the characters, and the backstory, the EE's do add A LOT.

I actually prefer the theatrical cuts. I own them on Blu-ray and the extended versions on DVD. I won't buy them on Blu-ray though. I love the theatrical cut of ROTK, but I kinda wish they would have kept these 4 scenes from the extended version:

1. 'The voice of Saruman'.
2. The undead army laughing at Aragorn's request and also Aragorn's despair at the sight of the ships (but leave out the "we will fight" bit).
3. Gothmog's death.
4. Aragorn beheading the "Mouth of Sauron".

I think they're much better than the theatrical cuts. That's the only way I see the movies anymore. The theatrical cuts out a lot of the little character moments and even some things that should have been included
[Show spoiler]like Saruman's death in ROTK.
Overall I just find them to better versions of the films. But it's really personal preference.

I just pre-ordered the set! including both versions with seamless branching would be awesome, I doubt that though..

I prefer them, but I'm a fan of the books. Not a diehard, but still a fan. So I enjoyed all the stuff they added back.

I don't think one has to be a fan of the books to prefer the extended cuts by any means though. They flesh out some characters and plot lines a good bit better.

The only people I'd tell to avoid them are those who thought the theatricals were already too long or boring in places etc.

If that doesn't describe you, then at least give them a rental if you can and watch them once and see which version you prefer.

I love the extended editions, I think the additional shots add to the story and excitement, but yeah, if you think they are already too long and drawn out, it's obvious that these are much longer.

Edit: The E.E. adds about 2 hours and 4 minutes altogether, so it's almost another movies worth!

I agree 100% here. I've watched the EE so many times that when I watch the TE (I do that occasionally, hence why I have said fromt the beginning I will own both sets) it just seems incomplete. There are soooooo many little things that I notice and go "Hey! What happened to... oh yeah" And because the extra stuff is 50+ minutes in RotK, I have A LOT of those moments But that's not to say the TE is bad, PJ has stated many many times those are his preferred cuts, and that the EE is for those that want to see more. Keep in mind, the TE versions are the ones that won what, 17 Oscars or something ridiculous, so yes they are still good movies

Sorry Walt, I didn't mean to call you out or anything, you just said a few things that I agree with, then I started rambling... I'm good at that

I prefer the extended versions of all 3 films. Hard to say what your opinion will be though since some prefer the TE. You are just going to have to watch and decide for yourself I suppose

QFT. IMO the compression on the theatrical BDs was nothing outstanding, never mind a much longer version loaded with 4 commentaries, LE documentary etc. I have a bad feeling about this.

The Botes documentaries are pretty good though. Nothing (middle) Earth-shattering, but seeing Mirando Otto shout "MOTHER ****ER!!" when she fudges up an action scene is worth every penny. They forgot to bleep it on the DVD.

Oh, one more thing: theatrical versions FTW!

Oh good, I hope it's really true that they will be on 1 disc each. I love the extended versions, but having to get up and change the disc halfway through the movie is a drag and takes you out of the experience.

Agreed.

And there is one interesting change the EE of RotK makes-

In both versions at the final battle before the Black Gates of Morannon, they yell "For Frodo!!!!", before they charge into certain death against the overwhelming army of Sauron.
[Show spoiler]So in the EE version they still yell the same line, however since they have seen Frodo's Mithril shirt by the Mouth of Sauron, that same line takes on a whole different meaning now because they all believe that he dead.

It kinda brings a tear your eye. (sniff)

Completely agree. That scene has such a different, and my opinion better, impact than in the theatrical version.

I agree to a certain extent. I want all 3 to be on one disc apiece, but not at the cost of the transfer.
