Some people just like/need to hear themselves speak (or in this case, to read what they've typed) and will complain about anything and everything because it gives them an outlet for their inner need.

For some the colors aren't
1) What they remember.
2) What they want.
3) Too Green
4) Too Dark

when compared directly against previously released versions of the film, and/or their own re-graded color timings that they feel would be best.

My apologies, I was remembering something wrong. (Too many screen caps have passed through my brain in the last 24 hours! ) My comment was based on this scene comparing the EE DVD to the EE Blu-ray:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/59622

As you can see, compared to the EE Blu-ray, the EE DVD has a green tint (look at the skin tones in the hand).

Here is the same scene comparing the EE DVD to the TE Blu-ray:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/59625

The theatrical edition Blu-ray is much closer to the look of the extended edition DVD.

Enough captures from the actual discs have been posted that there can be little doubt that FOTR has all-new color timing. In some places, the new color timing looks to be an improvement. In other places, I can't say I'm a fan of the choices (teal snow?!?!).

Really wish I knew when/if Netflix will get these. The more I see of what is being posted, the more hope I am loosing as far as the green tint is concerned. Still is ugly. Would love to rent first to see if this issue bothers me just as much in motion.

Anybody have any idea if/when Netflix will get these?

Don't count on it being soon. The Blu-rays of movies not recently released seems to be one of Netflix's weak points. I'm still waiting for several of these, including Topsy-Turvy. That's how I make my decision about questionable releases, too.

But, as someone said earlier, I'll buy this release. I love the EEs so much I guess it just won't stop me unless they looked worse than my DVD upconverted, and I don't take it that that is the case.

I hope the EE blus look fantastic, just to nullify the week of senseless debate over something that no one even has any proof over anyway. I guess some people have more life to waste than me.

BTW, FOTR was green in the theater. I remember specifically because I thought it looked murky and awful then, too. So I hope this release looks like that, especially if PJ "approves" of the color, just so everyone can play director think they know better than the actual creator of the films.

And no one is canceling their order. C'mon, drama is good for the forums but tell the truth.

Its amazing how even ten years later, not much that has been released can match such an experience.

BTW would it seem pricy and irresponsible money-wise to keep my theatrical blu ray AND buy the new extended versions? While the extended version seems to be the better film version, I think the theatrical version's may have a bit better pacing.
It's up to you if you want to have both the Theatrical and Extended Editions on Blu-ray. I wanted both editions on Blu-ray so I purchased the Theatrical Editions on Blu-ray when they came out and I will also purchase the Extended Editions on Blu-ray. Plus I purchased both Theatrical and Extended Editions on Dvd and Vhs. With the Dvd Extended Editions I purchased them with the gift set of each movie and I purchased them all together in a box. I also purchased the Theatrical and Extended Limited Edition Dvds of these movies.

Ugh, how anyone could prefer the new color timing in instances like this is completely beyond me.

Sorry, but it didn't look like that - this color timing is new (and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the picture being "murky" of soft.)

I saw it several times in the theater and am sensitive to PQ issues, this color timing is not indicative how it looked in the theater. Different parts had different color biases depending on where the scene was taking place, but nothing this extreme.... and nothing so consistently green/teal. This is a new trend, and is not exclusive to FotR [unfortunately.] Blade Runner and Alien didn't look so green theatrically either - they do on Blu though.

Seems like three of the big reviewers out there have all liked the retail set so this hysterical screenshot comparison is interesting but probably not needed anymore. But i guess it won't matter if god himself said he loved em since people have made up their minds already

Maybe Warner will be offering replacement discs for the theatrical editions of the Blu Ray since according to some people the new color timing is, in fact, the correct color timing as seen in theaters originally. It's not like Jackson could have changed his mind or anything (which is in his right to do). Warner Home Video and Peter Jackson must have really dropped the ball on the color timing for the theatrical Blu Rays and I think, in light of this new revelation, it's only fair they color correct that edition and offer those replacement discs.

I for one will still enjoy these on blu-ray, but the beauty about taste and opinion means that not everyone has to share the same one. I, for one, prefer the color timing prior to the change, BUT, I'm not going to let that prevent me from buying these no matter how small or large the change is. However, to say that they should like it because the reviewers did is just asinine. Now granted, I think that someone should actually SEE it before it is judged, as I will definitely do, but if they watch it and do not like it, there is no reason to tell them they are wrong or roll eyes at them...

I have a challenge for everyone. Please follow the challenge according to the following steps (complete each step before moving on to the next step):

1) View this short youtube video that is taken from the actual EE Blu-ray discs:

2) After you've watched the entire video, go back to the 35 second mark and pause the image. Look at the sky behind Gandalf's head.

3) Does the sky look to be an appropriate shade of blue?

4) Now, in a new window (leave the window for the above video open and paused at the 35 second mark), go watch this short youtube video:

5) Pause the second video at the 37 second mark. Compare the left side of the split-screen video to the right side of the split-screen video.

6) Which side of the sky looks like, well, sky?

7) Now compare the sky in the first video to the left & right sides of the sky in the second video.

Yep... the sky from the actual EE Blu-ray is too teal, just like the sky on the left side of the split-screen video.

Sorry, folks. But anyone thinking that this new teal color-timing isn't going to be found on the actual disks is in for a sad surprise. That's the way it looks.

That said, if you are like me, when I watched the first video by itself (without having the other video open for comparison), I thought the color looked OK. The image was too dark and the color was a little bit too blue/green, but it seemed better than what I remember seeing in the split-screen video yesterday.

Then I compared the two videos. RATS!

Mark

So what is it? Are these from the new EE BD and the shots we saw earlier with a green mountain are fake? Wrong?

I watched the sample video without the split down the middle and honestly, the colours aren't terrible (but they're not great) and it's a little too dark BUT I'm impressed with the level of actual detail here and would watch this over the TE.

After a minute or two, I think my eyes would probably adjust fine to this new colour temperature. And I'd enjoy the film, which is I suppose what matters
