Absolutely. Whether you love it or hate it; all opinions aside. I think we need this 'closure.'

There’s only one real winner in this whole thing and that's the quality of the review offered by our own in-house reviewer Ken Brown.

Ken offered nothing but the facts and backed it up with plenty of evidence, leaving the consumer to make an informed choice whether to purchase or not.
This review kicks into touch Bill Hunt’s vague infomercial style attempt & Robert Harris’s ramblings backed up with only an amateur photo taken with a digital camera.

i have made up my mind. being a disney fan for so long i have come to the conclusion that hey, colors change in movies. what matters to me right now is that the picture looks good, does not have artifacts, banding etc. the EE of the movies look great and I'm happy with those as they are. i will wait for PJ's word on the matter just out of curiosity though

It doesn't take a "scholar" to recognize that snow should not be green.

"No color issue," my ass.

And (to the "just shut up and buy it or not" crowd)... these are blu-rays many people have been waiting a long time for. Speaking for myself, I'm not going to spend a dime on a film that looks like it's been dipped in lime jello - and I'm going to complain, loud and long, until the colors are fixed and the damn thing's put out right.

... As everyone SHOULD. This set is very expensive, and they're ALREADY ripping us off by making us buy a spindle of useless DVD "extras" that 99% of us already own.

I can tolerate variances in color, to some extent. In the Asian blu-ray thread, there's been discussion of "Dust In The Wind," and some of the other Taiwanese art films that have a distinct blue tinge to them. It doesn't particularly bother me.

This this is another matter. It's so extreme I wouldn't be surprised if they came out and admitted it's a mastering error.

got an e-mail confirmation this am from Borders that they have cancelled my order

I know 67 bucks delivered is a pretty good price..but if it's not the way I like to be then it's bad at any price

Alright, well I think Ken did an excellent job in his review; really went above and beyond expectations.

At this point I believe we should have enough solid information out there to clear up misconceptions and know where the potential issues do lie.

What we know at this point (based upon the 4 reviews that have been posted in this thread)
- PQ is very, very good.
- FotR received a new transfer and a new color grade.
- In general the color grade works for the reviewers however there are individual scenes/shots in which the color grade seems off (too much cyan/teal). This isn't the case of the entire film being covered in a "green tint" as some people claimed early on, this is the case of individual shots and scenes.
- The YouTube video of the side-by-side comparison has been called incorrect by at least 2 of the reviewers (who both claimed the green tint and overlay wasn't as pronounced in their copies as it is in the youtube video).
- We also have reviewers saying that the "green tint" isn't as obvious as it was in the initial screenshots.

Pretty sure neither side is really going to budge from their stances, but I for one am happy that we've had 4 reviews all confirming the tint issue isn't an actual issue through the entire film.

An excellent review here at BR.com. I now have enough info to make my choice as a consumer. For $80+, if Peter Jackson intended snow to look green, I intend to pass on this set. In my view, it is a questionable "upgrade" from my theatrical set and too expensive to risk a purchase and have regrets.

Sorry, but that is wrong. The green/teal tint is present in every single screencapture that was posted. It's just that in many scenes it isn't that intrusive. Heavily blue tinted scenes just become a bit greener, heavily green tinted scenes barely show any difference and heavily red tinted scenes look more normal.

However, either here or at AVSForums someone posted a picture with 6 scenes from the film with 'regraded' colors and a comparison with the green intact and even those which were acceptable with the tint looked infinitely better without it.

So, regardless of how little the reviewers seem to be bothered, for me this is a clear indicator that something went wrong. No sane person would butcher their film like that.

Closer looking at the fuzzy images, it looks like there is at least:
1 Nazgul (from the TT Set)
1 Gollum (from the TT Set)
2 Pawns (from the initial Set, one of each color)
1 Gandalf (from the initial Set)
1 Aragron (from the RotK Set)

Looking for some better images, but for now that's what I've got.
I believe your theory of it being a handful of pieces is exactly right, hence why it doesn't cost THAT much compared to a full Noble Collection set, but also why it does cost THAT much. It's $40 over the regular EE edition, and 5 pieces for $40 is stupid. Unless they are totally exclusive pieces, which I doubt, considering the Noble Collection doesn't normally allow productions outside of their own, then you'd be better off saving that money and putting it towards the actual collection.

I was one the fence with this set, and the color issue having now been acknowledged, along with the price tag, has made my mind up for me......I'll wait to get this set when it goes down in price closer to around $50 or so. Yes, I'll buy this set, reservations aside, as I am just too big of a LOTR fan not to, but the color issue is too annoying when you pay for this set at it's current price. Lower the price on the set, then I am sure I'll be "OK" with the color issue.

sorry if this has already been asked and answered but does anyone know if they will be offering a steelbook for the complete set of the EE version that is region A playable? I'd rather get that or wait for it. I kinda have a liking for steelbooks for special movies, such as this!

thanks in advance!

These are going to be wonderful and they are the way Jackson intended them to be! That has already been confirmed.

Where?

The only 'confirmation' we got was Bill Hunt's statement that Jackson approved some master. Unless we got an unambiguous confirmation that the BluRay looks like that I'd take it with a grain of salt, especially since it doesn't really look like careful and professional work to slap a one size fits all color filter over the entire film. So, even if Jackson did approve this it was still a sloppy job.

But there is NO color issues if PJ approved the changes. Even Ken says it is very unlikely that there is an error made on the transfer. What you are getting is what PJ want the movie to look like. And the snow is not green. Don't be ridiculous. The sky is still blue and snow is still white. Which you can definitely see in these screenshots

If you still see green show here or green sky instead of blue sky and white snow. You better check your eyes

Yes this shot does not look good:

But IMO this is the only shot i do not agree on. But other then that this transfer is almost perfect

You really see Green/Teal in every single one of the screenshots included in the blu-ray review?

Guess I must have my monitors (4 at work, 1 at home) calibrated differently because I don't see it (though I do see differences between 2 of my work monitors and the one at home, their slight differences, but those monitors are always slightly different from each other on everything) -- or my eyes aren't sensitive enough to see it.

Personally I'll be keeping my pre-order (was going to take a lot to get me to cancel it anyway, seeing as how I've got it for just over $44). Based on what I've seen in screenshots provided by reviewers, and their comments I currently down I'd take advantage of a disc exchange, even if it is offered (but that could change once I have them in hand and see the 3 scenes where I notice a heavier tint).

agreed. we don't have any real PROOF that this is the way it's supposed to be or a f@ck up in the encoding process with someone putting a nasty color filter. especially since it appears on only one movie

hopefully Jackson will make a statement one way or the other soon
