While I certainly view The Lord of the Rings as art, as I do a lot of movies, never forget that the only reason The Lord of the Rings was greenlit and made into films was to make money. Just as Apple won't develop a product if it doesn't believe it to be profitable, the same can be said for big budget motion pictures. The Lord of the Rings movies are pieces of art and products in their own right. While it is within Jackson's right to modify his art, as a consumer of his product, I have the right to disagree with his modifications. This is assuming there were no mistakes in the transfer and what we are seeing is 100% accurate to his new vision for the film.

But that's the thing, it's not black and white, there are different underlying color schemes. Some shots are less affected by "greening" than others. If a shot is strongly red to begin with, it will still look red with a slight green cast. I'm at work and I don't have Photoshop here, but I'm guessing any eyeballs that look like they should be white do indeed push measurably green like every other highlight in these shots.

Kudos to Ken for an awesome review. Very well done.

Count me as another person who went to the screening Tuesday
night and did not see any cyan/green tint. The mountain scene
that has everyone up in arms was white and I especially paid close
attention to the "transition scene" and it too was white.

I don't know what to think anymore.

Well this review just saved me £55. My order has been cancelled and i'll stick to the dvd's. Some of those screen shots I have seen are just so wrong, reminded me of printing a photo and then when you see the outcome you realise one of your inks has ran out.

The Han vs. Greedo scene is the only one of Lucas' changes that really bothers me, because it greatly changes how Han is perceived as a character, IMO. Or the replacement of guns with walkie talkies in E.T., which just looks silly.

Well my impression is this is a mistake, but until we know for sure there's no point in arguing if it was intentional or not. Peter Jackson is usually really good about this kind of stuff when it comes to his fanbase. On the off chance it is intentional I'd hate to think I'll have to own the DVD and Bluray of films because they are different. Not a huge fan of altering films after their release. Given Jackson is a huge film fan I would assume he would feel the same way.

Lurked in the thread and read the last 50 pages, looked at the cyan/green-tint screens, felt it was noticeable but not a deal breaker, read the review, didn't cancel my order.

Can't wait to watch the whole trilogy in it's HD goodness.

No, it really doesn't. Nothing is more pathetic than fans who think they own a movie because they paid to see it in the almighty theater. Thousands of professionals put countless hours into making these 3 films for over five years. Yet they have no say in how they want their "product" presented because a fan paid ten dollars and sat in the theater for 3 hours? Uh huh... and spare me the "we made it a success" bull because we've already heard it during every other high profile BD release (Hint hint, you're no the first)

Have fun with your DNR'd, mushy, lack-of-any-detail ten year old transfers on the TE BDs. You and the disgruntled Alien/Aliens/Star Wars/Last Of The Mohicans fans (To name only a few) now have something else to complain about.

I think it is a possibility he might swap out the shot of Ian Holm finding the ring in the prologue of FotR and replace it with a shot of Martin Freeman for the ultimate edition after The Hobbit. If that were to happen though, the debates that would ensue would probably make this one sound tame.

In retrospective, I'm surprised as well.

Don't say that too loud! Someone might decide that the next "improvement" the movie needs is to replace Gollum with Jar-Jar Binks.

My vote for the re-make:

Fewer scenes with crying hobbits.

Well, some people have confirmed they did see a cyan/green tint
at the AMC showing. Thats what has me so confused, I knew what to
look for because of the controversy and yet I did not see it.
