Edit: Also, any of you wanting a Gladiator-style redo should keep in mind that the remastered Gladiator BD has massively altered color timing as well. Last edited by Aragorn the Elfstone; 06-18-2011 at 02:31 PM. |

If I dumped all my blu-ray movies that did'nt represent absolute natural color, I would'nt have close to 500...... might not have enough to call a collection.
Movies usually don't represent the real world, that's probably why we love them. And the LOTR series represents the ultimate in fantasy, as someone posted earlier: "we are not in Kansas anymore". If Robert Harris and Bill Hunt like what they see on the actual blu-ray discs that's good enough for me. I will own the EE set when prices drop. The impatience, rudeness, disrespect and hatred from todays world spilling over into these forums is a bit sad. This is a great hobby we all love, I would hope we could just chill out & enjoy it. Just my 2 cents. |

I do.
The color is wrong. My guess is that someone deepened the greenery and then, when the overall image was darkened, this filter bled into the whites. "Artistic choice" my ass. If that were the reason this insane color scheme would have carried over to the other films as well. There are many well connected people on this board... has NO one asked the powers-that-be WTF is going on here? |

Its all a question of personnal preference...
Personally, i think the new color grade looks great. In my opinion, most of the EE BD screenshots i've seen look better than the TE BD (except maybe for the snow shots). I will buy the EE BD for sure. Also, I already have the TE BD release and i'll keep it. I like to own both cut of the movie. |

This is all I have to say about this release. Unless I get an explanation that makes sense I won't even bother and even if we get a good explanation I'll still wait for this to end up in the bargain bin because I am not willing to financially support such changes to older movies. And even before that I'd see that I can borrow the set from someone to see if the version is watchable. I probably would have bought it immediately, had there not been the color issue. |

Besides, as already pointed out, the versions that the public saw in theaters and won all the awards have been preserved perfectly. These are the extended versions, enhanced with additional footage so that we may see the original films in a different light. |

I understand why people are upset about this... but looking at the comparisons on my calibrated monitor, I greatly prefer the new color timing. FOTR was always overly warm to me, to the detriment of the fleshtones. In the EE, the fleshtones seem more stable, there's more depth to the image (though I do note some loss of shadow detail in spots, which I'll take as a trade-off for the increase in perceived contrast - particularly in the Balrog scene), and just based on the screens from Blu-ray.com thus far, FOTR now seems more consistent with the color choices made for the other two movies (though I'll have to judge that for myself once I get my copy).
I mean, I get where people are coming from on the snow shots. But looking at f27 and f28 on the blubrew.com shots, skintones are slightly too red on the theatrical version. Desaturating red shifts it to green/blue, to the detriment of the white balance of the snow. But then, you look at f17/f18's snow, which shifts slightly to blue. It would have been nice to have the color of the snow more consistent between these shots... but I can understand why they would alter the timing to correct the yellow/red caste in the fleshtones. But then you look at the other shots where the new color timing absolutely helps. Compare f11 to f12 and the new color timing has richer color, more depth, and the cityscape in the background has more depth and detail. F13/F14, they've removed the bizarre orange caste to skintones while retaining the overall autumn coloring the scene was supposed to have. In the cooler scenes toward the beginning of the film (f1/f2), they've warmed them up so skintones aren't so blue, and in f3/f4 you can clearly see that they've removed the orange pallor from Gandalf's face and from the woodtones behind him. Just sayin'. On my calibrated display, I see the negatives that people are talking about, but... the positives I'm seeing in every other scene far outweigh the negatives. I'm looking forward to throwing this up on my calibrated projector and judging how these changes work in motion. |

for those of us who ordered from borders because of the deal... has anybody heard anything (good or bad) about the order? i want to get my amazon pre-order cancelled, but i don't want borders to end up closing up shop right before they are supposed to get their orders out.

This whole thread sounds like Bram Stoker's Dracula all over again.
Sadly, whenever I want to watch Dracula I reach for my DVD instead of my Blu-ray... |

To me the EE looks fantastic! I have never seen LOTR look so damn good. I do not see anything wrong with the first movie in the photos. As I said before the t.v is different from the computer. My computer likes to over colour my images. But on the t.v everything looks fine. Plus I cant wait to watch Return of the king in bluray! Also this will be the first time I have ever watched the EE.

Some of the FOTR scenes on the EE Blu-ray look better but others look worse. I'm particularly worried about the blue snow on top of Mount Caradhras. I'm glad kept my LOTR EE DVDs. This also reminds me of the way George Lucas changed the original Star Wars (1977) so that Greedo shot first. |
