C'mon, people. Now you're complaining just to complain about something.
I never bought the EE on DVD . And yes it is too much when the movies are being released on Blu-Ray, but that's just my opinion.

And I'm sorry you can't handle other people's complaining, but counting this post, this is only my 3rd post in this topic.

This thread seems to be dead. I'm very sad about it - there are no other discussions, just the sadness about the green tint.

This thread needs to be closed until the EEs come to the stores.

Really? You're really comparing a change in color timing to a change in actual events in a movie?

it is disappointing that it seems like neither version of fellowship of the ring that has been released on bluray so far is up to the same standard visually as the other two films in the trilogy, especially since it is my favorite of the three films.

I have only seen "The Two Towers" (at the movie theater). I was 12 or 13, so I do not remeber much. As a newbie to this higly praised trilogy, are the extended cuts REALLY the ones to see?

That is up for debate as well as some prefer the TEs and some prefer the EEs. The only way to know for sure is to view both and make up your own mind.

PLEASE read this:

1) There are several people that went to the theatrical showing of the EE FOTR last Tuesday that went into it EXPECTING to see the teal/green color shift. They had already seen the screen shots and they were SPECIFICALLY watching the color balance during certain scenes. They have reported that, in the theater, the snow was white and skies were blue, NOT teal/green.

2) Screen shots have already revealed that TTT and ROTK EE on Blu-ray received some (relatively minor) color timing changes compared to earlier releases. Yet, those two movies do NOT have a teal/green tint across the entire presentation. If someone took the time to adjust color on TTT and ROTK, why wasn't it adjusted to match the color timing on FOTR if that teal/green tint is what Jackson wants?

So, in theory, I agree with your argument. Yes, Jackson is entitled to change the color timing. But some of us that are applying a bit of logical thinking to this situation, the situation just doesn't add up right. Not only is the new FOTR color shift (as seen on the new Blu-ray) so far removed from what Jackson & Lesnie originally said they wanted to do with the color balance on the original theatrical release of the movie, it's incredibly perplexing that 1+2 above are adding up to equal 6. It doesn't make sense.

So, please forgive me if I DON'T consider it the "end of story". Personally, I will only be satisfied when we have a definitive and verifiable statement from Peter Jackson that this teal/green tint is EXACTLY what he wanted. His comments must be directed SPECIFICALLY to the Blu-ray release, and NOT the theatrical screening. So called "got it from an inside source" statements don't mean squat to me. I want it directly from an OFFICIAL source.

Mark

it depends. for every fan of the books and for myself, the answer is yes. If you have the ability to watch both versions, I suggest you watch the theatrical versions first and the extended afterwards. you can make up your mind then

Well, it may take more time, money and effort but, technically, it can be done (not looking quite as great as native HD capture but, considerably better than native SD resolution}---if the post house were to utilize an up-conversion algorithm such as Dynamic Element Expansion Protocol.

Although, I referred to its use in future motion pictures in the context of going 2K -> 4K, see –
https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post4522936

with a bit more detail of the process here –
https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post4528837

This same algorithm can be used for converting SD -> HD, if desired. Keep in mind, this is a rather sophisticated solution compared to some other up-conversion methods you may have heard of but, it will be used in the future for feature films characterized by a hybrid acquisition (HD digital and 35mm film footage capture) to provide a more seamless look rather than more rudimentary solutions like developing a series of custom gamma curves and scene files for the video operator, which has been the more typical past post production process.

Well, for one thing, it certainly has served as a vehicle to bring in new membership , so it has its upside, no matter which side of the fence you’re on.

Anyway, if this ultimately turns out to be a technical mis-step in the mastering process or an accurate deliberate color choice by the creator, if the later holds true, in the next round of debate/discussion you guys can all blame ‘Hollywood”, as even the mainstream media is getting in on the *green action*, as of yesterday - http://www.ocregister.com/entertainm...ovie-film.html

I, myself, believe the Wicked Witch of the West is the root cause of everyone’s green misery and this all can be traced back to 1939 -

Once a movie is released to the public that should be considered the final edit, and that edit should be always available, if for no other reason, then for historical preservation. There are only two kinds of modifications that I believe most people would find not only acceptable but also welcomed. The first is the correcting of defects, and by defects I mean cases like when a microphone appears on the screen or one scene of Star Trek The Motion Picture where you can see the crane that supports the Enterprise. The other is the removal of visible wires of older films. It would be really nice to watch the original War of The Worlds without seeing the wires of the flying saucers, wouldn't it? By the way, that's what they did with the Superman Collection on Blu-ray, kudos to Warner. Although I personally believe that even those defective scenes could be preserved by using multiple angles with seamless branching.

Other than that, movies should either be left alone or be released on multiple versions, but the original release should always be made available.

As for the The Lord of the Rings issue, I'd like to remind you that when Gladiator was first released a lot of people complained and returned their discs. That prompted the studio to issue a new release. So a re-release of TFOTR is quite possible, however, if most of the people who buy The Lord of the Rings have the same mentality of a large number of Star Wars fans that believe that if the director approved it it's okay, then we'll be stuck with this new version for a very long time, if not forever. It's a good thing that the DVDs, although not in HD, are of good quality so I'll stick with them until, as another reviewer pointed out, Gandalf The Green goes back to being Gandalf The Grey.
Yeah there should be a law. Who cares about that little "Freedom Of Speach" thing in the U.S. Constitution, that's the ticket.

Because we know movies are only guaranteed to be historically preserved if they are in our own personal collections. We know that they NEVER have multiple copies. You hit it on the head there.

And furthermore let's add something to that constitution thingy having access to all versions of all movies is a RIGHT and not a a privilege in our personal collections since we are going to rewrite that "Freedom of Speech" one.

.....

I am going to wait until I see it. If it is bad I will complain to Warner, if it is not I won't. If it is they will probably do a disc exchange later if it is not really like what PJ wanted.

But in the meantime I will enjoy them.

You all need to chill and quit chasing your tails in frustration.

I'm a disc fiend. I love having a large amount of discs, so 15 in this set is really cool. Also, I've never seen a Blu-ray case that can hold five discs, so that will be interesting.

If it makes anyone feel better, each film's 5-disc case is thinner than one of Disney's standard 3-disc cases. There are quite a few discs, but the overall package and cases aren't bulky as a result

Yes, it is cheaper for them to just re-issue the DVDs of the extra features, but when they put a MSRP of $120 for 3 movies, they don't deserve to go the cheapest possible route.

Yes, it just really irks me that one the most major releases on blu-ray this year has 1.5 times the number of DVDs as actual blu-ray discs. They could probably fit the extra features for each film on one BD25, certainly one BD50.
