The mint title screen is the final nail in the coffin. I will not be buying this unless there's an exchange for FOTR. There's no reason there should be these many issues with a major release like this one. The green title shows that there's a big difference between FOTR and the approved versions of TTT and ROTK.

Jackson not personally sharing a statement speaks volumes.

Feeling your pain. When I got a Blu-ray player, these films were right at the top of my must-own-on-BD list. Now it really looks like I'm going to hold off for now.

I think they added the green tint to celebrate the theatrical release of Green Lantern.

I cancelled my pre-order.

This image pushed me to cancel.

http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/7909/lotrle.jpg

It's pretty clear that this is a miscue. Why would an image of the
movie title need to be color graded?

I'm a novice when it comes to this but I was under the impression
color grading was used to set the mood of a particular scene and
is used on a scene to scene basis? Is this correct?

Those that are still buying, I respect your decision, so please respect
my decision too.

Of course, they make money when you click over and buy from Amazon. You always have to keep that in mind with reviews and affiliate links. It's one of the biggest releases of the year and one of the more expensive.

This was all that was said about the color timing issue:

"Colors are pleasing too, though it's worth noting that the color timing for these films has been redone. I've confirmed with production-related sources that Jackson and cinematographer Andrew Lesnie were directly involved in all decisions related to this new transfer and approved it personally. So to the extent that there are changes to the color-timing, they were made at Jackson and Lesnie's direction - the films look exactly as they want them to."

Didn't use the word green once. You read that and it makes it seem like it's all good.

That review is obscene. Do they review product with their eyes closed?

Its LOTR on Blu-ray and all you people care about is a slight green tint. Its not like its completely overblown. Heck I bet none of you would even noticed if you did all this comparing and stuff. I guess ill just have to enjoy these great movies without any of you.

I'd love to know why some mod thought I needed a 4-day vacation from the forum to "cool off", with no warning or specific reason given Did they even check my posts? What line did I cross that wasn't crossed dozens of times both before and after I was banned?
Considering some of the histrionics and rude back-and-forth on the last couple dozen pages from people who are still posting, and considering that barring a few lighthearted jabs at that "mredman" guy I don't recall getting particularly saucy with anyone, that strikes me as stupendously inconsistent moderation, and more than a little irritating

Hence why studios keep releasing films with inferior transfers. But for $84, you would expect a lot more effort put into this release. I already own all the Appendices found in the DVD release, so in essence I am paying $84 for three films, one of which has questionable new color timing that may very well prove to be an error or an oversight. I would gladly pay the $84 without hesitation, despite the recycled DVD extras, had Fellowship simply more closely reflected its original color timing.

When WB announced the upcoming release of the EEs, THEY were the ones that noted that the Fellowship would be redone using the 2k format, which is what brought the proverbial eagle eye down on this particular film in the first place.

Now, considering the overall color scheme between the 3 movies is no longer the same, I'd consider that worthy of report and a fix. The funny part is it was reported almost 2 and a half weeks ago, giving them just over a month to FIX the issue, but it's been clear that's not likely to happen at this point.

To get even 'more Tolkien' on you, consider the fact that the trilogy is all considered one big book. Take the movies into account in the same way. Does it suit you that the first third of the entire length of film has a minty green undertone in EVERY shot, but then that suddenly disappears at the start of the second film?

But no, please, continue not expecting quality out of the film production companies, I'm sure they will love you for it.

I think directors are far too liberal with the coloured filters... I don't need a blue or green tint to tell me how I should feel about a particular scene.
There are virtually no films today that are released in what one might call "natural color" and certainly no films that have the look and feel of 3-strip Technicolor. For years, most color has been at least partially desaturated, except perhaps in kiddie movies, like "The Cat In The Hat" and in many movies, almost completely desaturated with a heavy color cast added.

As far as LOTR is concerned, the tell-tale sign will be skin tones. If skin tones are green, then it was an error. If they're not, then it was intentional, even if different from the TE's.

I didn't create this image, I'm just rehosting it in a smaller size (the original was pretty big). All three titles are from the new extended edition Blu-rays.

I opened the image in Photoshop and measured each title using Photoshop's color picker. The "new" color swatch is the measured color. The "current" color swatch is pure white (255:255:255). I measured each color at a spot that was over a background dark area. At the "F" in Fellowship, at the "w" in Towers, and at the "h" in the first "the" of The Return of the King. The later two titles have a textured look to them with lighter and darker colors. I was careful to measure from a spot in the letter where it appeared to be white.

Fellowship of the Ring:

The Two Towers:

The Return of the King:

TTT and ROTK titles are very close in color, one just being slightly darker than the other. The FOTR title stands alone in its green-tinted glory!

FWIW, someone posted the title from the FOTR extended edition on DVD. That one measured as light grey in the blue color space. So, light grey with a tint toward blue. But not nearly as much tint toward blue as we see tint toward green in the FOTR EE Blu-ray.

Bottom line: The title on the TTT EE Blu-ray, ROTK EE Blu-ray and FOTR EE DVD all look "off white" without too much obvious color. The title on the FOTR EE Blu-ray looks more green than off white.

After getting into Blu-ray, I learned rather quickly to look before I leap, and also to look in multiple places. I received my education from Predator Hunter Killer Edition.... so no worries. I'll be looking at this release closely before plunking down $80 ...

I feel bad that people are paying $83.99 for this when I'll have it for $20 cheaper.

Someone create a poll asking who canceled their pre-orders.
