As someone far wiser than I put it today, the eye and brain instinctively identify near-white as white and adjust accordingly; very quickly in fact, within minutes of starting a film. (Yes, that was severely paraphrased. His expert explanation was far more elaborate, detailed and convincing. I wish I had a digital recorder rolling so I could quote him word for word )

The tint is there when the film is playing, and looks just as it appears in the screenshots. The difference is that the screenshots are being viewed in browser windows where crisp whites are everywhere, and screenshot comparisons are a click away to show how the tint affects certain colors. When the film is in motion, it's much more difficult to discern the tint unless you know exactly what to look for. Even then, it's the more problematic scenes that have the potential to be distracting. Not the entire film. (The most noticeable instance IMO is when the Hobbits try to stop for second breakfast as Aragorn prods them to keep moving. The snow and skintones are noticeably tinted. But even that may have a bit of intention to it, as the next scenes find the Hobbits descending into murky, intentionally swampy-hued swamps and other locales as night falls.)

The reason many are reporting they aren't seeing the tint is because without a proper white or color reference, it's difficult to see in a dark viewing environment.

That doesn't make it any more director's intention or any more an error, it's just the nature of a slight color tinting discrepancy. We'll have to wait for Warner or Jackson to address the tinting before drawing any further conclusions.

I agree with you, all I'm saying is that as many times as I have watched the EE's on DVD, I'm pretty used to the color schemes throughout the whole trilogy, and so far, I haven't thought about leaving the theater because if color tint problems... Whether we watch these with the lights off or with proper color references at our sides, we will all have big grins of happiness as the credits start to roll...

When I watch this YouTube clip at 720p and in fullscreen (no white browser window to influence my eyeballs and brain), I see the green tint like nobody's business. The mist/fog is hideous. It sucks!

Oh, don't get me wrong. There are scenes in which the tinting is more obvious, especially if you know what you're looking for. I only meant that the full film, while affected by the green tint, isn't one three-hour distraction

Yep, I'm cursed at this point. I can't unsee it no matter how hard I try. I've spent too much time looking at it, digging through comparisons and scrutinizing almost every scene.

I actually set up a separate calibration for FOTR yesterday so I could watch the film with the greens dialed down a bit

Interesting and you have confirmed my fears

I guess the good news is that I still have a few "USER" memory slots open on my projector and one of those might become "the one memory slot to rule them all" as far as Fellowship goes.

Also, someone please make me a mod. Those who "complain about the complainers" and try to discourage discussion of the issues will be shot on sight
You're discouraging discussion of the issue of complaining.

Here's my take about complaining:

It's anyone's right not to be satisfied by a product and voice their opinion.

It's also everybody's right to make a detailed analysis of the perceived defect and report the findings so that they can be discussed.

Those who try to discourage that only feed the companies that want to shove inferior products down their customers' throats. And that does not only go for BluRays but for all kinds of products.

People are only discouraging it because they want to feel better about their purchasing decisions.

WINNER.

It's all about internal validation and rationalizing. Some will buy a product then defend possible flaws in order to avoid buyer's remorse. Others will hold out until they have enough satisfying information to make the purchase. The former group is more likely to discourage debate and the latter group is more likely to stir the pot.

Not necessarily

Some just want to wait to see it for themselves and see it as it is meant to be seen with the actual product fiert. As it has been stated things like color timing and tint are percieved by the brain differently when the picture is in motion as opposed to screen shots.

MANY of the people complaining do not have the product in hand and have not seen it.

Personally after I see my copy and if it looks bad I will be the first one to complain, but it will be to WB directly where it has the best chance of doing some good.

Just like "You cannot judge a book by it's cover", "You cannot truly judge the experience, PQ and AQ of a Blu-Ray by screen shots on the internet".

And as KB said. Until we hear from WB and PJ on the subject. What is going on here is pure speculation.

Those screen shots may be right as far as the tint and iming. But it is meant to be watched in motion and the affect is different. But it may be the effect PJ wanted to achive, it may not. But the simple fact that the brain percieves pictures in motion differently make it clear that you cannot judge this on the screen shots alone.

Look at some pf the things that went on here. The first person that reported that they saw no issue and enjoyed it was followed by several people speculating why that person could not possibly be right even speculating that the person was color blind in the green spectrum.

Some that have the product say it is bad and some say it is not. But the seeking of reasons to complain or complaining about an issue like that where screen shots alone will not dictate the experience is not constructive. There is no debate going on here. Debates are based on facts and without alll the facts you cannot have a constructive debate.
