When, if ever, did they acknowledge a problem? Or did they initially deny any problem?

They denied a problem even while they were replacing the discs. Apparently it was just a matter of preference for more arrows/resolution.

Romansh, just spent that last eight hours tracking down the post above with the great series of screencap comparisons. (And in the process located many other of what I consider the most important comparisons, listed below). I made a single frame compilation of your series, for ease of comparing. Though I cropped and shrunk it by 50%, it's still possible to see what's going on there. Puzzling, by any measure.

Following are the other most striking bits of data, compiled for the convenience of friends on another film forum:

Here is one of the best posts I've read (again by Romansh) that offers a very plausible theory as to why we are seeing teal. And red.

It's hard to argue that a green tint wasn't applied throughout the release indiscriminately when you see all that. Some scenes it's more obvious than others, but it's always there. If it is intentional, it's a lazy job compared to the original color timing that had a lot of thought and detail put into coloring each scene. The new motto: just throw a thin layer of green throughout.

Thank you so much for this useful compilation.

I know there's no accounting for tastes, but how can anybody look at those comparisons and be ok with the new transfer is beyond me.

It's not only the green push (bad as it is) and the contrasty look (with hints of black crush), but also that hazy layer that sucks the light out of the images. It reminds me of the undesired effect you would get by processing a RAW photography and apply too much highlights compensation. As I have said before, it simply does not look even professional to me.

Well the UK set has blue Amaray's not black. And from the looks of it little to no green tint. https://forum.blu-ray.com/united-kin...ml#post4879078

So is just Fellowship that's affected by the green or do the other two films have the new coloring distractions?

Of course, I was just trying to 'defend' my take on the colour scheme. I see that some people have been suspended after my short sleep! (I wish I'd gone to bed earlier). As Alex said earlier, let's make our opinions after watching the blu ray for ourselves.

I will leave the bickering up to others for a while.

It is only fellowships picture that has been improved (imo) and has been subject to colour 'correction'. You are unlikely to notice it except in a few scenes that have been mentioned.

At this point, a news story would only serve to rehash the ungainly book that is my FOTR video review

As for buzz, Jackson and Warner are well aware of the situation. There's no way they couldn't be. (The studio folks I've talked to aren't surprised in the least when I ask about it; they've just let me know there's no official news or statement "at this time.")

Let's see what the next two weeks bring. I think it won't be long after the set's release that we see a statement or response from Jackson and/or Warner.

They're referring to the letters in "The Fellowship of the Ring," which exhibit a slight green tint.

More than hurting sales, it would cause confusion and make it that much more difficult to filter out unsold sets from retailers and replace them with corrected copies. Moreover, issuing two replacement discs would be far cheaper than replacing entire sets. Even if every consumer requested replacement discs, the cost of pressing two new discs and shipping an extremely light package would be significantly lower than replacing/correcting/shipping/re-shipping a heavy box set.

Peter Jackson is quite active on his Facebook page, and has addressed several discussion topics since the "green" question was posted in the appropriate area. He's aware of the concern, and I'm sure his silence is indicative of satisfaction with Warner's plan to address the issue with a recall or to make it clear that they adhered to his intentions. The only mystery, IMHO, is whether Jackson or Warner (or both) will provide the eventual and inevitable answer to the intention vs. error debate

Thanks for going to such lengths and giving your feedback. I agree that there will be a statement on this. As more and more people see the blu ray and comment they will probably have to. I don't really mind either way whether they recall or not, but as you mention the cost to them would be gargantuan if they do!! If they have made an error then someone will be getting a worse roasting than anyone on this message board can give!

No problem for me since I live in Europe. That would be the ultimate joke if all Warner distributed versions are broken and the rest is ok.

If they do acknowledge the situation I wonder if they'll be honest or try and BS their way through saying it was intentional, just to save a few dollars and not offer a replacement option.

[QUOTE=Roy Batty;4878814]

The GLADIATOR fiasco was exposed after release, and it was easier for the studio to acknowledge (to some extent) and implement a replacement program for a product that by then was already distributed and sold, and only for those who expressly asked for it. But if Warner were to acknowledge any flaw with this transfer now, before release date, they couldn't put out the actual product on the shelves and would have to recall all copies, after having spend quite some money on distribution (by now, most retailers have their copies stored).

Since, as has been said here several times, most buyers won't see a problem with their discs, it makes more sense to remain quiet for now, sell it like it is, and then issue some official statement on the matter and offer a replacement at a later time, likely several months down the road, to save face.

Then again, all this is pure speculation on my part with no real evidence to support it, and it well may be an educated guess or simply wishful thinking.
QUOTE]

This is an excellent summation and it may well be correct. If there is any problem I would expect them to act like this. As a business, and as a precedent has already been set with Gladiator I would imagine that sort of behaviour. However there are no issues like disapearing flaming arrows or intentional DNR on this release, unlike Gladiator. I hope that a statement comes out soon.

PS I have the UK version. Perhaps this is why I am not troubled by the colouring?

This is very interesting to me. I am in the UK (hence colour, not color!) and am happy with the colouring. Is it really possible that this affects only the US release? I find that hard to beleive, but....???
