I have to disagree that it looks 'wrong'. The image really pops and I can't wait to find the time to watch them entirely. I don't notice a green hue as some of the screenshots I have seen suggested. The color palette seems to be as I would have expected and the detail increased.

I am using a 50" Pioneer that has been calibrated in the last few months if that makes a difference.

Not just any Pioneer, but a 500M

anywho, can't wait to get my set tomorrow.

So when theatrical edition screenshots look like crap, that's because they're inaccurate because when you watch it on your tv it looks way more detailed and less over saturated.

But every single extended edition screenshot is definitely from the source and has tarnished the reputation of the film. And when people who own the disc say they don't look like the screenshots, they're being delusional.

I don't think it's pointless at all. All of the other comparisons we have had are done exactly this way; this provides an example where the changes are overall improvements. As far as removing the green tint from the Rivendell scene making an improvement, I am sure that there any number of changes that would result in improvements to *any* BD ever released. For me it is because I am a big fan of these films and even more so the story as it was originally written. Double dipping? Triple dip? Hextuple dip? 4K versions in 2020? For these films I don't care. When a visually or audibly improved version becomes available it will go into my collection. For different subject matter I would have a different response. There are many films I have on DVD that I won't be rebuying on BD at all, or I will wait until I am sure the transfer is top-notch.

I actually think he is on your side. I think he is implying that in those screenshots, the TE looks darker than the EE, and we all know the EE is supposed to look darker.

What kingkong650 is drawing attention to is that the positive changes to color seen in scenes like Rivendell are NOT the result of the green tint. Those scenes have clearly been regraded APART FROM the green tint, but then the green tint has ADDITIONALLY been applied OVER TOP of the regrading. As kingkong650 pointed out, the regrading in these scenes - the regrading that everybody thinks IS intentional - looks better when the additional green tint overlay has been removed.

Right. The new color grading looks great, it's just marred by the application of the green tint. I don't know if it should even be called a green tint I think the whole white point for the movie has been skewed toward this shade of green which also darkens the image as much as skews it toward green.

"Films." Plural. You have two outstanding looking films (I think all three look fantastic based on the screens and having seen the new master on the big screen, albeit a little less on the cyan side) and one that doesn't look remotely like a travesty. The complaints here boil down to "We expect perfection. We know that's an impossible standard to achieve, but we want it anyway!"

PS. Even five star transfer reviews have problems.

The random darkness of the film also got to me, especially when Gandalf first knocks on Bilbo's door, as that shot looks the same on this release as it would if you watched the Theatrical Blu-ray wearing sunglasses, and that isn't even an exaggeration. This release has its flaws, serious, unmistakable flaws that do rain on what should be its parade. Is this a truly satisfying, breathtaking, stunning image? Not as much as it should be, nor as much as its untampered with brethren are. So, sadly, what may be the finest long cut of the trilogy is (there is no may be's or possibly's here) the weakest visually, with completely unnecessary little "fixes" that don't quite fix anything. If you love the color green, this may very well be the an "achievement unmatched in the history of cinema." If you love films looking natural, realistic, and untampered with...this may be the new test case for what all can go wrong when revisionist history takes a spin at creating a new look for a film people have seen so many times that they cannot accept the differences made. A remastering was necessary. A re-envisioning was not. No matter what gets said down the line (if anything is said at all), the end result is a picture that is not as engaging or inviting as the other two films in the epic motion picture trilogy. No words can change this problem, be it an intentional change or a mishap, unless they are the phrase Paramount has had to utter quite often with their Sapphire Series: disc exchange.
