Since FOTR takes place after The Hobbit that would make sense IF that is what he planned.
Well, yes, FOTR takes place after the Hobbit ... a fairly long time after The Hobbit, in fact. Other films that take place after The Hobbit include the Two Towers and The Return of the King, which both follow directly on the heels of FOTR.

So, if it would make sense to change the coloring of FOTR to match The Hobbit, it would also makes sense, a fortiori, to make the same changes to the coloring of TT and ROTK to match both FOTR AND The Hobbit.

I decided that I had to shell out the bucks to really see it for myself since I have spent so much time debating this subject. So obviously I open it and go right for FOTR(fantastis top of the line packaging btw). Pop it in, and prepare for the dissapointment to hit me...

This could get very long winded so I'll just get right to it...The film looks fantastic.

And it's hard for me to really understand because I know the screenshots are right(and I've looking at the screens on my TV). So yeah it's very puzzling... Because what can I say? It doesn't look the same. It looks much better.

Now it is slightly darker in some spots, and the color timing has been adjusted slightly... But it's not bad or distracting or problematic. It looks really good guys, that's just the truth.

The Title? I could barely see it as being anything other than a pleasing soft white(in the screenshots it looked more green to me, which again is difficult for me to understand).

The Mountains in the snow and the ring? Looks excellent and the snow is fairly white and the sky is blue...Is it different than before? Yes... But it's not a bad thing...I promise(I expected to be the most upset by this scene).

The Shire? Although it does feel slightly toned down(I emphasize slightly), it still feels warm and vibrant and like a wonerful place to be. Again due to the screens I expected it to feel drab or off...And it didn't. I felt slightly different but not in a bothersome or distracting way... I was very nice.

There were two scenes that I felt captured properly in the screens. The breakfast scene and the waterfall scene. The breakfast one although it does look as green as the screenshot, it fits the feel of the moment and the weather... The boats and waterfall shot however I don't like in the new edition as the shot really feels grey and feels like it's had the color sucked out of it.

Besides that the Discs and the film look Excellent.

There's no point in waiting on a replacement program as one iisn't coming... The discs are fine... This is the way Jackson wants the film to look now(the film revisionism debate should continue).

P.S. I viewed FOTR on a 50 inch Pioneer Elite KURO Pro-111FD, with a PS3 as my player.
Illy I'm really glad you came out with a similar opinion to everybody (almost) that has seen the film. I feel better in the sense that my reaction is a shared one towards the film! Well done for making your own mind up, and watching!

I noticed that at the theater as well and I didn't like it either. When I watched some of the Blu-ray today, I noticed another bit I didn't like: When Bilbo fiddles in his pocket looking for the ring, the image looks dark and murky.

There is a little flyer in with the set for LOTR items you can buy, the ring is one of them, but it will cost $129.

And is there a big difference between FOTR and the two other movies? Is the continuity good? Right now im not sure about buying this set, ive been waiting for years for the blu ray version (I already own the DVD EE) and im pretty upset they changed the colors, to me it seems to change the tone and feel of the movie, FOTR was nominated for 14 oscars guys, so I thing people just think it was perfect. I dont care if it was the look Jackson intended, LOTR are my favorite movies, its even more than movies for me. Its not really the green tint that bother me, but the fact that they are now darker. What should i do

Hi Bill,

I'm going to respond to the reply you made to my post that this is taken from, but before I do, can you clarify something for me? What are you meaning to say in that statement I've bolded above? Do you mean to suggest that they WERE as careful this time as they were originally, or do you mean to suggest that they WERE NOT as careful this time around?

Take care,

I've only had the chance to watch FOTR so far in this new set... But I can't imagine there is a big difference in the tone.

If you want my opinion... Buy the set.

It's top notch.

It's clear he is saying, "Why can't you believe they were just as careful this time around as before."

I'm watching FOTR as I type this and I think it looks great so far, amazing detail present. I have only noticed the green tint a couple of times. The first place it did really stand out to me was the title. The words looked like a bright lime green to me. But overall I can't really complain, not as bad as I had feared...I'm not to any snow scenes yet, however.

I also purchased the set today. The LOTR theme wouldn't stop playing in my head. I was forced into it!

The green is noticeable to me. I'm glad that most people aren't having an issue with it, but it is definitely there. My solution was going through and creating a new user setting on the TV for it. I cranked down the green, slightly lowered the blue, and boosted the red. It really made a difference. I used the shot of the ring on the snow as my base, leaving the snow slightly blue-tinted.

Losing the green helped the slight underexposure and brought out more detail that I didn't see with the original calibrated settings.

I'm annoyed that there probably won't be a genuine fix as WBHV is saying that it is Jackson's preferred version, but I'm happy with the user setting fix. FOTR looks fantastic this way.

Yeah... What can I say, the screens really had me feeling dread about this set.

But you guys were right.

I think it's a class move you posting over here after all the things that have been directed your way in this thread.

Props to you on that.

1. The tint is so subtle. Everything white looks white. Even though the fade to white isn't pure white, it isn't a fade to teal. It's still white enough that it looks like white. Your brain can adjust to things that subtle.
Before anyone says "oh I have to use my brain to process the tint away?Pff I never use my brain when I watch movies..." you should realize that your brain does this all the time. Movies are illusions, it's not true motion. It's 24 different frames played in succession per second. You brain processes the images as motion in the same way it processes a fade to faintly milky white as pure computer standard white.

2. The ROTK shire and FOTR shire comparison is unfair. Not only does the tint not appear as extreme... Those scenes of the shire are two different scenes. They take place at different times of the year and on different times of day and with different weather. Peter Jackson may have even made color adjustments so that it wouldn't seem like The Shire looks the same all throughout the year.

3. And this isn't really a proper justification but the FOTR scenes in TTT always looked different. I remember there being a comparison when the Theatrical Blu-rays were released. Not only was there DNR applied to FOTR, but the The Two Towers' version of the scene appeared darker and with a different color palette.
They still look different on the Extended Editions, but I don't think they EVER looked EXACT. Plus these are flashbacks and perhaps Jackson and Lesnie intentionally modified color to make it look more like a flashback. The same way they color timed the prologue to appear to be from a different time period.
Hi Joe,

I'm willing to accept as a reasonable possibility that shire is intended to look slightly different between FOTR and ROTK. The reason you suggest is one that occurred to me as well.

That said, when I posted a comparison of the two it was directly in response to someone's claim that the two scenes looked "exactly the same" and that this went a long way to explaining the new green tint applied throughout FOTR, which was apparently for the purpose of matching the FOTR shire to the ROTK shire. I mean, that doesn't even make any sense in principle if you think about it (why apply a tint to the whole film for the purpose of adjusting only 10 minutes of it?), but that's what was claimed and that's what I was responding to.

Still, I don't think the same argument could reasonably be made about the different look and levels of detail in the conversation between Elrond and Aragorn in the garden of Rivendell that is split between FOTR and TT.

Take care,
HeKS

People may or may not tell you that that there's good color continuity between FOTR and the other films and you may or may not notice that continuity or lack thereof when watching for yourself, but from an objective perspective, no, there is not good color continuity at all. There is good continuity between TT and ROTK, but they both stand significantly apart from FOTR in terms of that color continuity.

Take care,
HeKS
