I received my set earlier. Gorgeous packaging. I checked out a few scenes on FOTR and it looks fine. It's a little darker and the colors are a bit different, but certainly doesn't ruin the experience. Also, a nice touch: the easter egg on disc two (the preview for TTT) has been included in HD!

Heks, I mean that 'they took as much care, this time around'. That was the intention of the sentence you queried, I believe that was clear as did the other person who responded.
Also Heks, what's going on with your questions... I'm starting to feel confused. ![]() Have you now viewed the EE Editions on your system at home? Or are you asking for others opinions because you want to ensure it's worth buying? |

Nice to hear that the FOTR looks great. I didn't really get involved in the debate and I was on the fence about whether or not to get the EE. I will grab definitely grab it when there is a price drop b/c I don't feel like spending $70 on 6 BDs and 9 DVDs right now

So, my answer to his question is that I would fully expect them to have been just as careful this time around and that is precisely why I find the blanket green tint and contrast boost to be so confusing ... because it indicates an approach that is exactly the opposite of being just as careful this time around. Take care, HeKS |

Another good review that makes mention of the tint and not sure if it has been linked or not as this thread moves to fast to completely keep up with sometimes. http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2011...lu-ray-review/ From the review............ Many TORn readers have been deeply concerned about reports regarding the color timing of the films. It can safely be termed a controversy at this point. So far as I can discover, no official statements have been released regarding it but with rumors floating around I checked with independent sources that are definitely in-the-know, and director Peter Jackson and director of photography Andrew Lesnie were directly involved and approved the changes in color to the films. But, after careful examination, I have concluded without relying on any other internet source or image, “Fellowship of the Ring,” seems to have some issues not shared with the other two films in the trilogy on Blu-ray EEs. For those not all that aware of visuals and are just in it for the story-telling, be aware that blacks should be black and whites should be white while each retains detail. The eye does a marvelous job of finding this in real life but replicating it on screen is a challenge as old as film. As previously stated, the already rich visual feel for these films has been improved but FOTR has some obvious greens added in this edition that are especially obvious over strong whites. For example, as the Fellowship climbs steep, snow covered peaks in bright sunshine, the scene actually looks like it has a green filter over it. Not only are the whites off here but the blacks in the snowy scene take on a greenish hue as well. Comparing it to a scene in “Return of the King,” where a certain white wizard on a white horse rides up the streets of the white city make it absolutely clear that something is drastically different between the two. It is also obvious when compared to the previous Blu-ray release. I have a strong, but completely unconfirmed suspicion that something went wrong in the scan or transfer process. I quickly admit however that I am no expert regarding the process and perhaps Jackson and Lesnie wanted just that look, but to me, and other sets of eyes I enlisted for second and third opinions, the green tint was dramatic. Admittedly, I was watching for it but there it is. Last edited by Todd Smith; 06-28-2011 at 11:25 PM. |

Here is what bothers me: that screen capture of the green sky in the snow was completely fraudulent. The movie looks and sounds better than I have ever seen or heard it. I wonder the motivations of the person or persons that started the whole debate. Obviously you can never believe what you see on the internet, but those posts and videos influenced people to not make a purchase. If you were on the fence about this set, by all means go out and get it. You will not be disappointed.

Oh my, that is going to be the thread of all threads. Instead of zooming in at 400% to find a misplaced pixel the scopes will be zoomin at.. I think they are still working on software to zoom as high as the "scientists" want. I assure you, they'll find that pixel to deem it an purchasable set.

Here's a comment from someone over at AICN
----------------------------- I can confirm Fellowship looks like **** by mattman It looks like something's wrong with the tint on my TV. It's not color timing... it's a green filter over every scene, and it looks really bad. I went into this with an open mind, but this is lazy at best. I hope there is a trade-in program at some point, after enough people complain. The complaints are totally warranted on this one. ------------------------------ Re : mattman by real deal Do you have a s[t]ore bought copy? ------------------------------ Real deal, yep by mattman Just picked it up this morning. It's a beautiful set, and I like how compact it is. I've watched about an hour of Fellowship so far. I figured the complaints were overblown... I was wrong. All the daylight scenes have lost much of their natural beauty and range from tolerable to eyesore. ------------------------------ Discerning eyes can easily see the problem even on the actual discs in motion and it's very bothersome. As has been mentioned before, being able to easily spot this kind of stuff is more of a curse than a blessing. And to karlosfunkster, as I've said, I have an HD rip of the EE versions that is identical to all of the screencaps from the actual BD disc in every single instance. I watched that copy and tested it on my 120" screen before I started contributing to this thread. There is zero reason to think that the BD disc itself would look different than what I have in any significant way. Take care, HeKS |
