Got this set today from Amazon along with Sucker Punch (been waiting all day for UPS to arrive
![]() I have not yet watched Fellowship but I absolutely love the packaging. It's both sleek and shiny. The black cases are cool, as others have mentioned, and I love that they included the inserts from the DVDs. I can't wait to check out the Costa Boates documentaries as I have never seen them before. |

Who's deleting posts in this thread?
Not sure what was wrong with suggesting a new thread for people who have actually seen the movie. Looking at copies, screenshots, and YouTube videos doesn't compare to viewing the actual movie. Said something like that and it got deleted. If you delete, you should at least have the courtesy of messaging the poster explaining why. |

....and therefore any "screenshot scientist" arguments are from here on in are on very shaky ground? (not that I think there was ever much "science" to them) All one has to do now is point to the "teal snow in LOTR" to cast doubt on any case they might be making. |

Well, that's where some of the confusion has been stemming from. Some people assume the words "green tint" mean everything will look green. That isn't the case. Pop in any movie in your Blu-ray player, bump the greens up a bit on your display, and you'll still see plenty of blues, reds, yellows, etc. Similarly, bump the greens down on your display while watching FOTR and you'll notice an image that looks much more like its previous releases (in terms of color, not detail).
In FOTR, the majority of the skies are still blue, the fields are still golden, the fires are still red. They're just blues, golds and reds that exhibit a slight green tint. A slight tint doesn't make everything look green -- pure whites are the only obvious victims -- it simply alters the remaining hues ever-so-slightly. Again, when certain factors align, it's more noticeable. Most of the time, though, it isn't as noticeable because the proper factors aren't in place to reveal the tint that is there. For those who remain distracted, might I humbly suggest setting up a separate calibration on your display with the greens dialed down a bit. It's an imperfect but easy fix, and brings the image more in line with what you're used to. Granted, it doesn't address the contrast issues, but a few more tweaks help a bit in that regard as well. It only takes a few minutes, and will spare you some heartache ![]() |

Not to go all lawyer here or anything but the statement comments on the HD Mastering Peter saw does not comment on the DISCS THEMSELVES. Peter very well could have seen it correctly in the mastering studio or whatever with a "new color grading", but what about the film as it reportedly appears on the DISCS? I want it from Peter's mouth that "yes Ive seen the discs and the green snow and what not is my artistic intent"

Ok, I saw the first half of FotR and just skimmed through the 2nd and it should surprise no one that I could not in ANY WAY be more happier with the video quality than what I saw.
I honestly tried my absolute hardest to see if the green tint would become a distraction and it NEVER did. Not in the snow. Not in 2nd breakfast. The fight scene that was posted on youtube. It just NEVER got in the way. The screenshot that showed the 2nd breakfast scene could not have been more off. I can't explain it, but that scene looked SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better in motion. Maybe the way I have my TV calibrated just happened to create the perfect conditions to watch this film, but I seriously could not see the issues and I am willing to bet that anyone who is being completely honest with themselves will not have a problem either. I have a Sony KDL-55EX710 and with an Oppo BDP-83 and I will be more than happy to share my calibration settings with anyone who is interested, but I just could not see it the way the screenshots were presenting it. |

The statement isn't entirely clear, though, so I'll update things if more information comes to light. Hope that helps clarify! Last edited by Ken Brown; 06-29-2011 at 01:07 AM. |

I think you mean you would get it for 64.99 since you put the first $10 down.

Those who have actually seen it, pretty much like it, green isn't as bad or they don't even notice it much or at all. The skies are blue, the smoke is grey/white on mine. Those who haven't seen it and are relying on other people's screenshots or YouTube videos, still the ones screaming green. I went in thinking it was going to be bad because of this thread and I just finished watching it and now I'm glad I bought the movies anyway. If you're a fan of these movies, you should buy them. |

Not that the unmodified presentation would be unwatchable. Far from it. But the tint makes the image look just a little muddy for me. |

Lucky you that you didn't notice it for whatever reason, but it's most certainly there. Now if PJ would just speak up and tell us all why? |

Watching Fellowship now. The increase in detail is incredible. Finally, a very fine layer of grain is visible! Seriously, every hair, pore, thread, leaf, blade of grass and costume detail just pops of the screen (with no edge enhancement ringing that I can find). There are quite a few scenes, however, in which the teal/cyan/blue push drives me freaking nuts, though. If you're blessed/cursed with a keen sense of accurate, lifelike color, some scenes will really please you, but others will make you wanna tear your hair out.
Like I've said before, I just can't stand teal being unnaturally shoved into every dang movie's color timing, and this one is no exception. I have a feeling The Hobbit's color timing will annoy me just as much as this and other current films like Transformers, Knight and Day, etc. The slight dimming of certain scenes really didn't bother me at all, though. As far as I can tell, very few dark scenes' detail are swallowed up by the shadows. As I expected, I have a love/hate relationship with the Fellowship blu-ray, just like do with the Aliens blu-ray. |

I think the trend is that viewing environments, individual displays and calibrations all contribute to one's ability to perceive or overlook the tint. If you don't perceive the tint, and are capable of taking a properly calibrated screenshot, I would recommend doing so. I think many of you would be as surprised as we reviewers as to how different it looks in accurate screenshots and how it looks in properly calibrated motion. The tint is still there in motion, it just isn't as distracting as it is in static shots. (Barring a few scenes in which it is more noticeable.) |
