It's standard for anything with an unannounced release date in the year to have a New Year's Eve release date. It pretty much means nothing that we don't already know.

I can understand why. I have watched both cuts and the extended just feel so much slower and plodding than the theatrical version. The longer version might work for a book but a movie needs to be tighter.

Agreed. It is similar to the Harry Potter films, it seems like more of the fans of the books like the first two movies which I found dull because they were more faithful to following everything from the books and then with the third one they were more concerned with making a good movie and fans of the books angry.

I personally prefer the Extended cut. I don't think it slows down at all in the added scenes. It adds an extra 2hrs 03mins to the full trilogy, so it's like adding an extra movie, so it does take longer to get there, but when I decide to watch it, I'm not in any hurry. I wish they had done six 3hr movies!

Viggo Mortensen, however, is on record with his preference for the Extended version, even saying something to the effect that he doesn't consider the theatrical versions the 'real' versions of the films. |

Nobody would know since there has not been an official announcement yet. And, the only people that would know for certain would be those who work for WB either at a boardroom level or in the encoding lab itself. And, in either of those cases, they wouldn't be divulging that kind of "top secret" information on these forums without the company having formally announced the release yet.

Hopefully official: June 28, 2011
It says at least FotR is a brand new transfer but didn't see if the other two were. And I guess even with 50 GB's of availabilty, each movie needs 2 discs of it's own. Can't wait. |
