See, I hear that, and I immediately think one word: Lucasfilm. Not for revisionism, but for lying to the public, telling them that mistakes in the Star Wars DVDs like reversed surround tracks were "intentional". I'll never trust LucasFilm again. When I see ten years of LOTR DVDs - including the recent Blu-ray - and suddenly a new version is presented with some distinct changes to the color timing, and I'm then told this has always been the intended look of the film...well, forgive me for being skeptical. It's my nature to be intellectually curious. I had my "Where have you gone, Joe Dimaggio?" moment when Lucasfilm lied to the world regarding the SW DVDs. If a company that famous for quality control could screw up so badly on such a high profile title, and then lie about it, then anything's possible.

My question remains...if this is the intended look of the film, than what the hell happened with all the other home video incarnations of the same film?
I picked up the EE BDs yesterday and haven't yet popped them in the player to check this out. This weekend I'll compare the EE dvds during this snow scene to see if I notice any difference regarding the tint.

However, regarding the "WHY" aspect of your post, "WHY" would they have all the others editions 'wrong' and 'only' this edition 'right?'

Money.

Why invest the money in the first set of BDs when they announced this EE set straight from the get go? It would make more sense, financially speaking, to do a decent job and get the theatrical version out there so the people who wanted them could buy them up. I never bought the TEs, knowing the EEs would be out eventually, though I did double dip on the dvd's.

As for why the dvds would be allowed to remain 'wrong,' I can't say. I can only guess, again, at Money (at the time of the EEs they may not have wanted to bother since Blu Ray was either out, or around the corner).

This is not The Matrix we're talking about. But I've seen Fellowship in theaters, on the theatrical and extended DVDs, on TV, and on theatrical and extended Blu-rays. All of them looked the same up until the new Blu-ray which is noticeably darker and more green.

The good news(if you can call it that) is that certain scenes that I was dreading actually looked alright, such as when they're walking through the snow-covered mountain. It was darker, but not really green. The sky was still blue and the snow still white. I prefer the older color scheme, but the scene wasn't ruined the way some of these screenshots would seem to imply.

The real frustrating thing is that color scheme aside, this is a fantastic transfer. I never hated the theatrical Blu-ray as some did(mainly because I can't spot DNR quite as well as some other folks). But there's no denying the EE Blu-ray absolutely blows away the previous one. I watched the Council of Elrond scene on both and the EE is so much sharper and detailed it makes the first Blu-ray look like an old DVD.

It would be nice if WB admits in the not-too-distant future that this was a screwup and offers up replacement discs, but I have a feeling we're stuck with this transfer for now. I'm glad it's not the disaster some have made it out to be. But at the same time, it's disappointing knowing it could've been even better.
I agree wholeheartedly with all of the above. I was able to watch selective scenes (some lasting longer in duration than others) on my 55" Vizio (using ISF-calibrated settings but not actually calibrated) and to these eyes, there is definitely a tint to it. The detail is clearly there but unfortunately there is always something "not quite right" with the picture. I too viewed some of the scenes in question (snow-covered mountain trek, 2nd breakfast) and to me, there is something going on in these scenes. The issues didn't necessarily take me out of the film or bother me all that much because the detail is there, but that being said, I'd love to see what it's like sans filtering and only hope we get the chance to do so.

Yeah, so I watched a good chunk of Fellowship last night... and I barely noticed anything. I mean its pretty obvious that theres a green tint but absolutely nothing BOTHERED me... to the point of boycotting this release, so I'm happy I picked it up. Will DEFINITELY be enjoying this upcoming weekend.

Ken,

There is nothing, especially within the realities of the Internet, that will allow you to "sit back and enjoy the film" unless you are willing to ignore all but the most egregious, mean-spirited and dis-informational posts.

While you and I may agree, or not, as to some specifics, I must make the point that you have performed here with yeoman-like spirit and fortitude, doing your absolute best to field questions, to illuminate discussion and attempt to educate.

The site is extremely fortunate to have you represent its interests.

Well done, sir!

The DVD set is certainly well done, but I wont be watching mine again. I need to see these in High def one way or the other. Ill get the EE blu-rays at some point but not right away.

It looked incredible! I think it´s great that the "holiday"-feeling(like a suntrip) of the movie is gone. I mean it was always to bright, it didn´t feel like they were in the middle-earth I visit reading the books anyway! I am more than pleased with the release! A little darker/greener, more like I see it in the books, and amazing detail.

Glad I didn´t cancel my order... Now give me The Hobbit!

I started on FOTR last night. I watched the first 40 minutes. I may not have gotten far enough to the "teal" sections, but I didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary in the parts I watched. The sky looked blue.

The only instance of possibly a very slight teal tint was when the Ringwraith first asks about the ring. Other than that, everything looked normal to my eyes.

No offense but I'll weigh a review from an owner of a Panasonic Kuro over a Vizio any day. Vizio makes a good tv but nothing compared to the visual quality of a Kuro.

I’ve been a long time lurker and finally registered this morning as I wanted to give my input on the LotR Extended blu-ray and finally just become a participator of the forums.

I’ve followed (most of) this giant thread on the green tint issue and have read more than one critic review on the subject, including Ken’s (great job!).

I was very concerned on everything I was reading about this green tint problem and could also see it in the screenshots posted on this thread. So when I finally purchased my set yesterday, of course I took it home to see how ‘bad’ it would look to me.

But I will say I was very pleasantly surprised! Knowing the green tint is there, I actually ‘looked’ for it and I actually found it very hard to see. Yes, I can tell there is a slight overall greenish hue (VERY slight), but I didn’t see any ‘green’ lettering on the title, I didn’t see any green in Gandalf’s beard, I didn’t see any green in Sauranam’s (sp?) pure white beard. Now, I haven’t gotten far enough in the movie to see any good shots of snow, but I feel pretty confident it won’t be obvious to me from what I have seen so far, at least not like it has looked liked on these stillshots on this thread.

Now again, I was actually ‘looking’ for this green color, if I didn’t visit this thread or read the reviews, I am positive I would have never even noticed it.

I will add the screenshots seen on this thread do NOT do the movie justice. In these screenshots, the green/teal/cyan is much more obvious, it is definitely not like that in the movie, at least from what I have seen.

As I said, I haven’t watched the whole movie, only about the first 45 minutes. So when I eventually watch the rest (probably this weekend), I will comment further on it.

But this was not a screw up there will be no replacement discs. Haven't you read that it was cleared by Peter Jackson himself. This is how he wants the movie to look. If another release comes out you can bet it is this one because this is Peter Jackson's preferred version

Isn't it time that people move on and start complaining about Star Wars on BD?

So what happened with all the other releases? Did Jackson not approve them also?

HA HA HA, whatever. I just haven't gotten around to calibrating this set as I got it in December. All of my previous sets have been calibrated by the late Randy Tomlinson (RIP) so I know what I'm talking about. If you think my choice of sets is sub-par and therefore makes me an unreliable source of reporting what I'm seeing, then so be it.

I'm trying to run with this too.

The DVD set of EE's is so pretty and it's only worth about $10 selling back.
My Walmart thinks the price of this set is $85! No one told them about $60.

I also cling to the notion that I prefer the theatrical cuts because it's what I saw in theaters and you don't have to change the discs or watch it over a whole week.

The new set will always be tempting me though.

Did he approve them? Is it too much to expect a straight answer from Jackson? A "this is how I always wanted the films to look, sorry about the last 10 years" answer?

You guys are nuts.

I am wondering if the Canadian set is different then the US set as I don't notice a bad 'tint' in the movies.

White is white, blue is blue, red is red and black is black.

I watched disc 1 of TTT last night(finishing at about 3am) and boy is it awesome too.

I really tried to watch for the image issues and I didn't see them. The color came out as I would expect....

... there must be a color timing change however it doesn't change the fact of a fantastic picture.
