Great news. Glad i held off buying the TE's. Day one buy for me. Glad to see FOTR is getting remastered. Perhaps now the films are being split onto two discs maybe the picture will be btter on TTT and ROTK.

This had nothing to do with the PQ of the films. And you think RotK needed better PQ? That movie looked gorgeous... Granted splitting the discs they could put on a really high bitrate and that won't hurt at all, but the PQ issues with the TE trilogy, as stated numerous times before, had nothing to do with compression of data.

Edit: If there was a remaster done on FotR, I am all for it, but that's not the only one that suffered. Did you see Theodin's beard when he buried Theodred in TTT? Ugh, that was some nasty nasty looking shots. Hope that one gets the treatment as well, if the rumor is true! I'm still a skeptic though, and will be until I see it.

Now i can buy this. Fantastic news about the first getting a remaster. And the movies are on 2 BD's.

See, warner. If you do right the first time i wouldn't have to make threads like this-

If they are going to split the movies on 2 discs each - they could have at least included the theatrical and EE.

I personally like the theatrcial versions better. I find the pacing much better. I still haven't got the theatrical versions, but I'm bummed out to find that FOTR is getting a remaster. That one is my favorite, and now it turns out if I get the theatrical version, it will be inferior.

These items should answer a few questions:

Quote:
Audio will be 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The Fellowship of the Ring has been remastered from the original 2k digital files.
Audio is 6.1.
FOTR should have a better PQ.
And the official date is June 28th.

But this is welcome news regardless.
Well the DVDs of the special features discs already exist, it'll be a matter of printing different artwork onto those DVDs - no money will have to be put into making them, encoding the files, creating menus and all that. BDs do cost quite a bit more to press than DVDs I think, and would require that bit of extra effort. And since it looks like each movie and it's special features will just be in one 5-disc standard BD case each, it's not like the set would've necessarily been much smaller size wise. If it had been just BDs it would've been a 7 disc set at least (ROTK would need to be split, I don't believe the others would) - and I doubt they would've put 7 discs in one plastic case, they'd have divided it into one per movie, like this. So yeah, despite being pretty hefty, this is pretty much the cheapest option. It didn't even require any of that pesky seemless branching

I don't think they could include both on one disc. The EE's aren't just new sequences; they're entirely different edits with entirely different cues.

EDIT: I also just realized that it's been days since the LOTR FB page said "4 DAYS LEFT!!!" in its status. Well, we know what was so special about today I guess.

will obviously be purchasing, but 9 of the 15 discs in the 'blu ray extended edition set' are dvd standard def extras....that is certainly disappointing, though not completely unexpected.

They could be, its been done before on DVD, but as others have mentioned, there were some sacrifices. There were some things that were changed that some people may have noticed. I couldn't compare though because I have never seen the versions made with Seemless Branching...

It could still be done, the extra footage would just be a bit longer and would seemlessly branch off from the theatrical at an earlier point. It was done on DVD for the Limited Edition versions, so they could do it again if they could be bothered.

Oh. Hmm. I wasn't aware that used branching, although I suppose it should have been obvious.

even though I'd prefer the theatrical version with a better PQ because I get bored way too easily , I still can't wait for these!! maybe I'll watch them as a 6-movies series (2 hours each, more or less)

I thought the LE's had the TC on one side and the EE on the other?

Update: they were flippers, so they were seamlessly branched unless they had very low bitrates (which is possible I suppose).

That was how I used to do it on DVD when I felt like having a LOTR week.

What a bust. A 15 disc set for what should need only 6 discs. Way to jack up the price. I was hoping for 2 big things from the Extended edition Blu-Rays.

1. Each movie on a single disc
2. The Appendixs in high definition.

Now we know the set will feature neither.

Gone with the Wind is longer then the first two extended editions and it was fit comfertably on a single BD-50 with room to spare and IT LOOKS FANTASTIC. Spreading the movie over two discs will do absolutely nothing to improve the quality all it will do is give the studios an excuse to jack up the price.
