Its seem like the highdefdigest forums are the new safe haven for all the harsh talk.

If you think this thread is out of control, go see those threads.

f-bombs and name calling being dropped left and right.

EDIT: Even in that thread the people who have seen it and love it is starting to take over.

Can someone wrap up in like a paragraph why I'm hearing people are pissed about the new release so I don't have to read 300+ pages of this thread? Much appreciated if anyone responds or the opposite to everyone who is going to blast me for not reading. I just want the scoop without the BS. Thanks.

Green tint perhaps? Any other probs? I don't give a shit about the color change I don't think. I'd like the price to be like 40 bucks though since they already got their money the first time around. (commence telling me about how no one forced me to buy the first ones (I didn't BTW) and it's the director's choice).

Thanks.

I think it's amusing that this thing made it to almost 400 pages. Geez...

If you like it buy it. If you don't then forget about it. If you've got a personal vendetta with Peter Jackson take it up with him. Arguments on the internet never go anywhere so I don't know why people waste their time.

HD Digest's forums are a complete wasteland. The Smackdown forum is the only safe haven left for those few bitter fans from the format war. It's pathetic and one reason why I rarely post over there. Not worth it.

Thats it, a green tint, which does not look bad at all, a few scenes are a little less desireable than before, but the detail that is now there b/c of the remaster is gorgeous. I would say check it out, I doubt you will be unsatisfied.

The honest to good truth is that if you were to read this thread starting on the day the discs came out you will see that people who have seen the disc are overwhelmingly pleased with the video quality and say its a great set.

The green tint IS there. Make no mistake about that, but the effect it has on the picture is not noticable unless you do all sorts of comparisons.

Trust me, these discs look absolutely fabulous and the only ones I see still complaining are the one haven't yet seen it.

But dont take my word for it, go through this thread from the last couple of days and you will see that the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

As for the price, I can't comment on that. I do feel that its a little high, but it was worth it for me.

Okay so that saves me reading through all the complaints. Thanks. Now where can I get it for 40 bucks.

Dont think you can right now. Just wait a month or 2, amazon will drop it. I wouldnt pay the $70 either, I borrowed it from a friend who got it then got called away on a business trip. No way am I spending $70+ on movies I already own on DVD. Not worth it for a little boost in quality. Still the same damn movies.

Only watched Fellowship but my reaction was, yeah it looks a little better, but ive seen this 10 times already. I didnt even completely finish watching it.

Question for those with a 7.1 receiver and setup. I was watching part 1 last night, and all of my speaker lights were on my receiver display, except the Surround Back Left and Right speakers. I think every other movie I own, regardless of sound mix, all speakers are displayed on my receiver screen. But for this movie, those weren't shown. Even though all 7 of my speakers, and sub, are hooked up.

The "SB" was lit up, but the boxes showing SBL and SBR were not. However, I had put in Wedding Crashers later that evening, and every speaker was displayed.

Anyway, watched the first disc of Fellowship last night and it looked fantastic and the green didn't seem to show up nearly as bad for me as the screenshot would lead everyone to believe. But then again, my tv has been "professionally" calibrated by me. The sound was absolutely awesome, so glad I have started investing in a better home theater sound system.

i rarely get rid of any dvds even though i've picked up the BD, for several reasons: (1) DVD is still the "standard" for home video, you may at some point want to travel or lend, and odds are still very good that a dvd player will be available while a BD player may not; (2) a set like LotR EE is just too cooly packaged for me to part with; (3) nostalgia (same reason i still have a couple hundred VHS tapes packed away, although unlike DVD at present, i can't even give them away, much less get 25 cents for one at a garage sale).
YMMV

I need to look at this disc a bit further, to me there seem to be inconsistencies in the color timing of the remastered LOTR compared to TTT and ROTK. The green tinting is definitely there and obvious compared to the latter 2 titles. What I am seeing is the typical Warner Teal and Orange color timing. The river in LOTR is teal throughout. Isengard is cast over in a green tint that is simply not there in the latter 2 films. Faces show more color in the first film compared to the pale faces in the sequels. I guess my point is the versions up till know were very consistent with the look of the film. If they were going to retime the 1st film they should have retimed the 2 sequels to match the look of the first, or they shouldn't have retimed them at all. Going from the 1st to 2nd film you are kind of left shaking your head as the look of the films vary. Going from the 2nd to 3rd you don't even question it.

Concerning detail it is very consistent across the board. To my eyes I really didn't see the 1st film better the latter two in terms of detail. It finally came up to matching those levels. Not perfect but, 4.5/5 for PQ is very accurate.

olivehead gave a bunch of good examples; however one that was left off would be that if you wanted the original color grading and not the new one that PJ and Co. did for the BD presentation.

I still believe, to some extent, some of the people complaining about this release are former strong HD DVD supporters who love to bash any Blu-ray possible. Without mentioning names, some of those people at HDD and AVS (and a couple who also post on this forum) to this day still hate Blu-ray acting like children. They are the ones who hate Bill Hunt because he correctly predicted Blu-ray would win the format war and produced logical reasons why Blu-ray was superior in general. Ever since the format war ended, they are obsessed with screenshots obsessively zooming at pixels to cry at edge enhancement, DNR, and color timing. Funny enough, they didn't care about these matters with HD DVD nor the poor, recycled Universal transfers, or smoothed over Warner releases.

Now, I'm not saying this is the case with every person who dislikes the extended Fellowship, only a certain number of them.

This is why I created a specific user setting on my television to counteract this. If you drop the greens way down, drop the blue just a little, and boost the reds a bit the resulting picture is far more in line with the rest of the trilogy. Faces have actual flesh tones, snow is a light blue, and (most important to me) nighttime scenes are blue again. Whenever the film has a night scene, I think this BD (with the user settings) really shines the Buckberry Ferry scene especially. Also, the Mines of Moria matches the Two Towers flashback very closely with the tweaked settings.

Again, it's not great that I have to make changes, but for anyone who is a stickler like I am and am distracted by the tint (which I am still not 100% was completely intentional and would trade instantly if there was an exchange down the road), this is a viable option. Otherwise, I have zero issue with the set.
