There are only two people that truly know/knew how Lord Of Rings was supposed to look. Obviously, we aren’t going to get a critique from JRR Tolkien, but the books are available. The images are in narrative form, but at least they are readily available. The only other person that knows how Lord of The Rings is supposed to look is Peter Jackson. We have been told via WHV PR release that what you see on the EE BD is exactly how Peter Jackson wants it to look. There was never an issue of this sort with The Harry Potter BDs since JK Rowling is alive and well and accessible for comment.

How can we be sure that what WHV PR is telling us is true? I’m satisfied, but some of you are not. Perhaps it would help to contact Peter Jackson for a direct comment. We know people are trying, but so far… no luck. Has Peter Jackson ever said anything about this issue? Yes he did, in 2001. There is no reason to believe that his “vision” for the movie has changed over the years. The time, money and technology available to realize the changes, “to nudge it sideways from reality” as he says at the beginning of the Regrading Video has changed and has enabled him to more accurately set the mood and tone of the Fellowship of the Ring that he wanted from the beginning. Will he change it again in the future? Certainly a possibility. If you buy into what I’m saying and don’t want to watch the entire video again, just check the statement at 4:30 about the look he was going for in the Prancing Pony Scene, “green and uriney” in his words.

YouTube - ‪LOTR Digital Color Grading Part 1 of 2‬‏

So far, I have watched Disk One of FOTR. So far, I think Jackson nailed it. It no longer looks like some medieval swashbuckler based on historical fact shot in New Zealand (disregarding the big hairy feet and pointy ears and people flying around on giant eagles, of course). I have now been whisked away to a mythic land of the ancient past to take part in a desperate mission to save my world. It took me about 30 seconds to become completely engrossed in this wonderful world of middle earth with the heroes I came to love when I read the Lord of the Rings for the first time in the mid ‘50s.

The way the BD is supposed to look is… well….the way it looks.
This is very enlightening, thanks for the link. I understand their intent now, although I don't agree with thier decision on how DG was applied to the film. Arguably some scenes look impressive with digital grading techniques applied. Other ungraded scenes I saw during the video look more natural/filmic...and much better without DG. It seems they applied their color filters to the entire FOTR motion picture, when they could have (should have?) applied it to specific sections only.

Just an opinion...the love the films and the new EEs.

Maybe he forgot to reset the Orc Alarm function on the sword.

Yeah, FOTR is as greenish as the American release.

This wasn't a tint issue, it was in response to the entire new color grade as a whole.

Jackson has confirmed the new color grade was what he wanted before the EEs were shown in the theaters the last 3 weeks.

So hoping to see a return to the original color grade is highly unlikely.

As for a replacement due to the tint, that's only slightly unlikely in my mind (given WBHV's statement)

I see. I misunderstood. I wasn't at the theatrical screening three weeks ago, so I can't say whether or not the EE Blu matched that. If the tint is not a part of the regrading, then yes, we will see a replacement to the new regrade.

I agree that we won't see a return to the original color grade (but I would be surprised if there was a major difference between them, if the contrast and tint are indeed errors).

Jackson intentionally left it out because he felt it would be "confusing to the viewers".

Not sure why it would have been confusing for Glamdring and the other weapons made in the elder days for the elf-lords to have their glow; and yet not for Sting.

As for missing in the 2nd part of Moria, that is a mistake that's yet to be caught and/or rectified.

As it deserves to be. Its a great set with a few complaints regarding the extras and packaging.

But as far as video quality is concerned its a GRAND SLAM!

Or, could you elaborate a bit on what you feel is improved, and then I could go back and see if I can agree.

Thanks!
I can elaborate. The detail is MUCH stronger and the color palette just plain works.

Can anyone confirm whether the Digital Copy of FOTR has this green tint?!?!

I will check it out tonight

If it doesn't...I bet we will get a remastered FOTR EE Blu for X-mas!

It does. It's the same transfer as the Blu disc.

My version has the DVD colors. Very white snow.

Well, that's a horse of a different color. Mine, which was downloaded yesterday on iTunes through the code, has the colors that are very similar to the original EE DVD.

Honestly, yours has the teal snow?! When and where did you download it?

I wish I could take a screenshot of it, but the copy protection is not cooperating with me. I would take a shot off a camera, but I am afraid I would be stoned to death for it!!

Now there is clearly a change in color however notice the clarity of detail in the hills and trees. The shadows and clarity are much improved.

Hmmm, I will take a look at it in just a few minutes. I hadn't really looked at it, I was just repeating what I could've sworn Ken had said, that the digital copies and the Blu's were both affected by the green tint.

PJ could authorize it if there really was a mistake made.
You misunderstood the post. I'm suggesting the green tint may be intentionally applied to make future versions of the release more appealing, resulting in better sales. In order for an exchange program, the studio must admit that the existing version is defective. That is not the case here.

Where's the Ken Brown signal? I swore I put it around here, somewhere...

Mmmmmm, no. Paramount never admitted Gladiator was defective. In fact, in the release announcing the exchange, they said that nothing was wrong with the first version, but we're releasing this version anyway.

Fine. They announced an exchange program. There is no exchange program for LotR.

Yeah, I think you're right, WorkShed. My digital copy does look a bit less green than the Blu does. Interesting.
