Well I decided to see what my settings were for my set and as always it was set for the movie/cinema setting and it's color temp was cool. I turned it to "normal" and suddenly the teal was gone. Snow was white as it should have been. My guess can only be that when the movie was color timed it was to accommodate such a setting.

But simply changing it to Normal viewing made an incredible difference to me.

My set is the VIZIO XVT553SV LED Full Array

and my Blu-ray Player is the Oppo BDP-83SE
Since you did see it in the theater was the black crush present as well?

I agree with every single word you posted in that.

More or less what Ken said as well.

I also more appreciate that you don't seem obsessed with litigating your opinion over and over again after your viewing, as if anyone who see's it differently is wrong and an idiot.

Unlike a good majority of the posters here of various opinions.

So kudos to you sir.

If you think about it from that perspective IMO it makes the colors look EVEN better to me.
So how does that argument hold any water when you pop in TTT and ROTK and it looks vastly different? They only wanted to go to Middle Earth for the first movie? The colors look even better in FOTR, so they by contrast (ok pun intended) look worse in TTT and ROTK?

Look, I'm not one of those who is so put-off by the green that I can't watch the movie. I like the transfer. I just think the green makes absolutely no sense, either from a continuity standpoint nor after having seen how anal PJ was and is about every detail of his life's work.

The deniers, I don't get it... if you like it, awesome! You have no reason to want a different version. Those that are unhappy with it have every right to voice their displeasure. As "annoying" as it may be, I find these "stick my fingers in my ears and HUMMM I CAN'T HEAR YOU" deniers and apologists to be even worse. You're just arguing for the sake or arguing, you don't even have a cause or an end result in mind since you already got your end result.

Some of them would probably die laughing reading what is going on in these forums and most likely tell the lot of us to go out and get lives

This is one of the things that baffles me: Why do so many people on internet forums think that everybody else is a clueless idiot?

You can be certain that even some people without the knowledge will instinctivly perceive this image as 'wrong' but couldn't point the finger to a specific cause. We just never hear of those.

Also like many others posted, the internet has already become a part of the 'real world'. This goes especially for technically knowledgeable people which are the main customers here. The average J6P still watches DVDs on their ancient 4:3 TV, probably zoomed up to get rid of the black bars.

Fair enough.
However, didn't he already do this by actually applying selective grading to specific scenes? Weren't 70% of the movie already graded?

Yes, there are scenes in the new EE that obviously contain new grading but - a constant single color green filter overlaid over the entire film is NOT(!!!) grading! Grading is scene selective and even specific to selected areas of a scene. A single color filter can probably be set up in less than 30 seconds and all it'd need is the time to process all images of the film data without any manual intervention (i.e. a cheap and very lame tool.)

Also, if that was the case, why only the first film and not the other two? I'm sorry but this argument just makes no sense in light of the result.

Thank you for this post and know I appreciate it! I was just trying to give as honest an opinion as possible from my perspective and maybe it could help others who might be on the fence if they have a similar video setup. Even with my complaints, this is a must purchase IMO (assuming no major issues with TT and ROTK which I certainly dont anticipate), but not everyone will feel that way which is great as well.

I certainly can understand/respect all opinions of the transfer after viewing it due to the amount of variables involved which I mentioned in my post. I really dont see any point/need to push my opinion on others as I think everyone should make up their own mind, but I think its great if everyone throws out what they honestly think.

Like I said, I am very happy overall and consider it well worth the purchase, but its certainly not as good as it could have been IMO due to the green tint (which still feels like error IMHO as slight as it may be). I would LOVE to see this kind of detail with the original coloring. Time might tell with a future release(s) which I hope it does. I think a 8/10 is a very fair rating if I were to give it a numerical value. Until then though, the good outweighs the bad for sure and I will get many enjoyable viewings out of this.

The audio IS 10/10 though.........WOW!

IMO they DONT look VASTLY different. Ill watch TT tonight all the way through and Ill see if that still holds up. I'm one of these people, I just watch the movie. I don't care about DNR/EE/color tint UNLESS they become so god-awful bad that I can notice it under normal viewing conditions.

Here is a possibility that I think has SOME merit:

WB knew that Fellowship of the Ring was BY FAR the most scrutinized of the TE due to DNR/EE. So they decided to remaster it and PJ saw a chance to finally get the color correct and he went for it, but its possible that he wanted to do the same for TT and RotK, but there wasn't time and is saving that for the ultimate editions which we all KNOW are coming.

You wouldn't have been impressed if it was on one disc.

Excellent post, Todd. I just want to say that I told you and everyone else so the night I returned from seeing the new master theatrically.

The improved scan with much more detail certainly makes up for the few cases where the color timing looks a little weird on FOTR.

I would not watch the theatrical editions on Blu (even though I bought them) since FOTR didn't look very good to me. Now with the improved detail on it I am really looking forward to watching the whole set again this week.

In Germany there were also problems with the German dub of all three films (the German PAL TV + DVD SD norm results in a 4% faster pace of all DVD films and is causing a half step to high tone pitch. For the DVDs they corrected the audio and they used that audio for the BDs as well which results in a too deep tone pitch).

WB admitted the mistake after customers complained and is working on new discs with corrected audio.

The German electronic market chain "Saturn" (which still sells the faulty discs like most of the stores) has a notification sign on their shelves which points to the audio problems AND to the green tint "problem" and announces the exchange program WB is preparing.

This is a GOOD thing not only for their customers but also WB Germany has to do new discs anyway and the green tint of FOTR is made public for non forum folks.

I wonder if WB really told Saturn (and therefore other companies) that the green picture of FOTR is mistake that will be adressed.

I do not think so cause they refer to customers and WB pointing out these problems and probably they have mixed that stuff up.
This would also explain why they write all three films have a green tint proble when only FOTR really has.

But I shouldn't have to do this on a Blu Ray set I just bought. This is 2011 not 2001. Who even still wants non-anamorphic on DVD? Who the hell owns a 4:3 TV that would buy this set? It's ludicrous.

I just wanted to say, El_Jay, I think most of your posts on here make so much sense. I wish more people on either side of this debate were as level headed as you. Kudos!
[Show spoiler]

Also to Todd, I absolutely loved your review! I never knew you had such a nice setup(four SVS subs).

And one more thing of importance, I think that those of you who write to Warner about this issue should be sure to point out that you are aware of the color grading changes that were made, when pointing out the blanket tint issue, so they don't mistake one complaint for another thing, just to help keep things as clear as possible.

Well, I work tomorrow, but hopefully someone can watch FOTR and compare that to their copy of the BD. Lets see if TNT received a green/teal/cyan print.

Thanks Frogmort!

Good call as far as making clear to Warner our complaint..........I did that earlier and made sure my email to them was clear about the tint vs color grading.
