Have to say that the green tint throughout FOTR really is annoying. Around a third of the film now looks just plain wrong (not merely different), and rather crucially, is actually also very uncomfortable on the eyes. It's a case of "it'll do for now." Watched the first half of Two Towers and it looked pretty damn good (phew). Will finish film discs 4, 5 & 6 tomorrow, and am looking forward to it. btw Hard to believe that this happened. I sincerely hope that a FOTR exchange program takes place, as happened for Ridley Scott's Gladiator. This needs fixing.

Just finished watching Fellowship and my God is the transfer stunning. Aside from my previous complaints about the transfer (Mount Doom having terrible blacks in the prologue and a too-dark image of Bilbo fidgeting around in his pockets while looking for the ring), there is nothing more for me to complain about. Well, no. Amon Sul at 1:11:46 is pretty bad and there's no way to justify it looking that green.
At 46:54 there's white snow. OH, MY GOD! WHITE SNOW IN THIS GREEN-INFESTED MONSTROSITY OF A TRANSFER! Rivendell has never looked better and it's simply gorgeous. The same goes for Caras Galadhon (for a perfect poster, go to disc 2 and pause at 47:37). I'll watch TTT tomorrow. I want to watch Lost. Last edited by AreaUnderTheCurve; 07-03-2011 at 01:59 AM. |

Btw, they can manipulate the flesh tones to their liking without affecting other info in the frame, its a very old technology called digital color grading. Last edited by notops; 07-03-2011 at 02:27 AM. |

Part of the issue about the "green" tint is that adding an overall green tint to any film or video presentation has the effect of dulling colors and the dynamic range of the moving images. For those who have watched the Extended Editions of the Lord of the Rings films for years now, I think we can all agree that even on DVD it was clear that the color pallet of all the films was very richly detailed. You could pick out the different colors of each of the Hobbit's coats, and they were truly in no way the same color. I think the won Oscars for the costuming on these films -- I'll have to check.
So, anyone who feels it is a pointless exercise to voice concern about what appears to be an authoring mistake, I would ask that you take the time to understand and appreciate where we are coming from. The "tint" has the effect of changing our reactions to the film from "drooling" at the color, to almost feeling sick at the image. It isn't something to turn your nose up at ![]() |

Of which there is no evidence strong enough to support that concern.

The new EE bluray is very Orange and Teal throughout with deeper blacks or basically being underexposed. I can even buy into the revisionist color scheme if the sequels were done in the same manner. As it stands the contrast, brightness, and colors on the TE blurays and EE versions of TTT and ROTK are spot on. The EE of FOTR looks very different. Blacks are extremely deep, dynamic range is decreased, faces go from fairly pale to full of color and teal and orange dominate the color palette. What is up with the green tint throughout the entire film I don't know. With digital grading that would never be necessary. |

No offense, but if you cannot tell the massive difference between each individual movie's color scheme (compare the theatrical cuts if the EEs are too confusing with Fellowship's changes), you should get checked out for color-blindness. |
