I finally watched FOTR on my 46" Sharp from which I sit about 6' away from and I was extremely impressed. My HDTV is calibrated as I did it myself using DVE and the green tint is nowhere near as noticeable as some people here have made it out to be. I went back and looked at some of the screen caps in this thread and they did not look like what I was watching. Yes, there is a slight green tint, but if I had not been looking for it I probably never would have noticed it. I even paused it and and went through some frames during the second breakfast scene and it honestly did not look like the green nightmare that people have been showing. I believe that some of the people in this thread either have incorrectly calibrated monitors/HDTVs or they aren't calibrated at all.

The technology was being developed during the late part of the FOTR's production. I believe the visual effects folks at Weta Digital created much of the software during the FOTR, and it was ready for use in TTT, and later features.

On the bright side, the image isn't as green as it would be if Regan McNeil started doing projectile vomiting. |

It has a colored tint and so do the menus for the other films.
Don't you know that "making a mistake" is code for "I don't like it"? |

Yeah, I seriously doubt these transfers were messed with accidentally. PJ has been sitting on these for quite some time so I would it rather odd if he was not right there reviewing these transfers as they were being done. Unless Jackson comes out and says "Hey folks, I am sorry about this slight green tint. I was on vacation when they did the transfers." then I will continue to believe that the people watching Slimer TV simply have poorly calibrated displays.

Ok, so one thing that I think needs to be kept in mind is that all three films have been regraded. Well, if I'm going to limit my comments to what I know, I'll say that both FOTR and TT have been regraded (I haven't checked out ROTK yet). Neither of these movies looks like the theatrical versions in terms of coloring.
As a number of people have commented, going from FOTR into TT on the new EE set is somewhat shocking (at least for some). That can be chalked up to both the green tint and the contrast issues on FOTR. But the thing is, when one considers the new color timing on TT and the new timing on FOTR apart from the green tint and contrast, the films now look more consistent than they ever have, IMO. However, the reason I'm pointing this out is just so that the differences between the Theatrical blu-ray and my "fixed" version of the EE image don't cause confusion. FOTR has been regraded from scratch and looks different. The green tint was applied after these timing changes were made. Here's a sample of how Saruman looks during his conversation with Gandalf in Orthanc once the green tint is removed and the contrast is fixed. Keep in mind, this is using the exact same filter set as was used in the revised version of the Aragorn shot. No tweaks have been made to settings. These settings work on every image without adjustment, specifically because both the green tint and contrast boost are uniform throughout the film (which some might consider to be a highly suggestive fact on its own.) ![]() |
