Netflix will have it in due time I'm sure. Since you have already made it clear you aren't buying I don't see how waiting ends up being an issue but I have no issue in saying you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't use your own eyes to view it in motion.

The top picture is EXACTLY how Fellowship looked in the theaters. There is plenty of symbolism in the color of the picture. Rivendell is a safe-haven. A place of warmth, a beautiful place. A golden look enhances all of this. The second picture downright kills it. Away is the warmth and safe of Rivendell.
The look of Rivendell was *amber*, or gel frame #5 in the old stage lighting color gel flip book. Amber is that vaunted "Magic Hour" look so sought after by filmmakers - the last hour of sunlight before the Sun begins to dip below the horizon. That's what Rivendell looked like...the magic hour of golden light before twilight, and nightfall...because that *is* Rivendell thematically and actually; that's the great sadness the Elves are enduring -- the last moments before twilight and nightfall.

There is language to color. We went through sheets and sheets of #5 at the old theater I used to work. Green? What was it - #43 or some such (don't remember, shoot me)? Yeah...rarely touched it. For a good reason. #5? That was our bread and butter.

Can't tell you if Rivendell's "Magic Hour" look is gone or diminished because I haven't seen it. If it is, that to me is far more of a problem than Green Snow.

I'm not going to drop a Grant and a Jackson for the privilege. Yeah - I'll wait to see if it shows up as BR rental in Netflix.

Netflix has stopped carrying a lot of new catalog blu-ray releases. If you want to watch an older title (filmed prior to the creation of the blu-ray format) and the title was released on blu within the last year or two, its not uncommon for them not to have them. I think Netflix assumes people are okay with either renting the DVD or streaming it if it's on Instant.

I've had to buy quite a few catalog titles blind because of this, but as you can see from my collection count, I'm not super bummed out about it. It would be great if there was an easy alternative for others that wanted to sample catalog blus though.

It will be great when this can be rented for those who are understandably on the fence. I dont blame you for being hesitant until that happens since it is hard to say how much the green tint will bother each individual.

I finished the whole set last night and the funny thing is, I find that the 2nd and 3rd movies now have a more natural look to them over Fellowship due to the new color timing of Fellowship. It used to be the other way around: That Fellowship was the one that looked natural. After I watched Fellowship, I thought what they had done was bring it closer to the look of the other two movies, but now after I saw TTT and ROTK, I'm still thinking this was a mistake on three levels:

1. To mess with the color timing in the first place.
2. To globally apply the green tint.
3. Regardless of either tech or a artististic mistake, it's still a mistake.

That being said, I generally don't mind the new timing at all, with the exception of a few well documented scenes that, for me, back up my reason for numbers 2 and 3 in particular.

I agree 1000 times over. Look at Frodo's face in the TE picture, he looks like he's OD'ed on carrot juice.

Agreed, I think it looks the best of those 3 screen shots personally.

But again, I'm not a hardcore videophile and watches movies mainly for the story. So I'm not paying active attention to how the color matches the tone of the scene etc. like he was talking about. So I respect that others who are more into the visual art of movies, rather than mainly into the stories like me, may have different opinions on such things. I've always been more of a verbal person than a visual one. I love reading and writing, but can barely draw stick figures etc. So I've always been more about stories than visual art. Not that I don't appreciate the visuals of movies, just that it's secondary to the story for me. And I have pretty much no interest in visual art like painting etc. Just doesn't do anything much for me with very few exceptions.

So for me, as long as the Blu ray looks a lot better (i.e. sharper etc.) than the DVD, I'm happy with my purchase 99% of the time as I'm just not that picky about A/V stuff. I like HD and prefer it to DVD for the sharpness and because SD stuff looks particularly bad on my 720p Sony Wega rear projection TV. But that's about it. Otherwise I'm just there for the stories. Everything else is secondary for me so I don't pay a lot of attention to things like color tinting, EE, DNR etc. or even really know what some of that stuff is.

Can you post a shot of this scene from the iTunes digital copy?

This one has some obvious regrading in the EE BD so it would be a good indicator if the iTunes version is from the new master or an old one.

You prefer a more natural look that accommodates plenty of detail. While detail is great, and I certainly support the blu ray format: too much detail can become problematic in certain situations.

For example, the scene in alien where the acid from the alien is burning through the floor: it is quite evident that the floor is made of styrofoam. Because of the amount of detail present in the frame, the artificiality of the sets becomes apparent: and the detail starts to diminish the credibility of the film. Detail is best when it is serving the film: which it does most of the time.

There, the full fix looks great.

The EE is way better on the fixed it looks like the grass in The Shire is withered or dead. And The Shire is supposed to be full of green from the grass. The EE is the way to go. Really understand why PJ changed the movies look.

Hope they re-issue a non-botched version eventually.

You figure they are going to want to re-sell the movies many times so I can understand messing up some part of each set.

I´ve seen the new FOTR transfer. It actually has more detail, but the green tone doesn´t feel right. It looks totally different than the other two movies.

Maybe, 6 months from now, WB will do an individual release of these movies (the blu-ray discs only). Maybe a new FOTR transfer will be placed for that release.

WB has done that before for other movies.

This review sums up every issue beautifully on FOTR and is worth its weight in gold.

So why is the sky green, too, and the path Gandalf travels along, and his robes and the scarecrow and the flowers and whatever else occurs?

Grading doesn't work like this. If he had wanted to make the grass greener he would have made the grass greener, not everything.

Sorry, your reasoning makes no sense to me.

Has anyone gotten theirs from Barnes and Noble yet? I'm wondering since the shipping is so slow, what condition did yours come in?

We all know that there is no mistake. Warner made a statement telling that. Thats why people that think an exchange program will happen are kidding themselves because the way FOTR looks now is the intended look by PJ. If it weren't PJ would have come out and said so after warner made it clear. Now that PJ has not said anyting or complained we know that warner is telling the truth and there is nothing wrong with how FOTR looks now.

So why not say that's cool he's the director this was his intention, man its not like he put a fake Jabba the hut in the movie then I could see a complaint then.

Couldn't agree more we know from warner that this is the version PJ approved so there is no sense in complaining about it.

I have found the opposite to be true as of late. Examples would be Josie Wales, True Grit (John Wayne), and Beverly Hills Cop to name a few. I would expect the EE's on blu on Netflix sooner than later.
