I know, and like I've said before, I was irritated at the price that is put on them... but I knew I would still buy them because I NEED them... they're mine, my own, my precious...
But anyway, complaining and even giving the TC's 1 star reviews because they are not the EE, then complaining about every little detail of the EE once they are released... It just blows my mind... Me? I'm SUPER EXCITED... I can't wait, and although there are some things I would change given the opportunity, I'm still gonna buy em b/c we wants them, The master says get them. |

I don't think I'll actually buy the Ultimate Editions unless it's worth it. To me, it would only be worth it if the UE had significant footage added to the original EE footage. If the only thing that will make the UE, Ultimate, is that the bonus features are all on blu-ray discs and there's some deleted scenes on it I'll pass. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I don't care about bonus features that much!

I held off on the theatrical versions (as I suspect many people did) because I wanted the Extended Editions. I also held off on buying the seamless branching LE DVD versions of the films with the new Coates documentaries.
Well, as regarding upgarding to Blu, in this case, all I care about is the movies, but it looks like we're getting the EE's, plus the Coates documentary series, and the (great) behind the scenes docs. So I'm getting substantial upgrades in PQ, plus the Coates docs which I've never seen. I'm going to consider the redundant discs with the old making of content as back-ups in case I ever step on one of my six old bonus features discs, or accidentally insert one of them into a wall socket, or accidentally fry one in the microwave after soaking it in Crisco. Cause we've all done that. Bring 'em on. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 03-22-2011 at 11:35 PM. |

Sometimes, screenshots are accurate. Sometimes not. I'm just wondering if the surround tracks are going to be fixed - I've lived with Star Wars on VHS and laserdisc, I can take the visual flaws from the DVD versions, but the audio flaw on Star Wars...it's probably the sole reason I haven't spun that disc in what? Five years? |

This should be an intriguing set, but...
As much as I do want The Lord of the Rings extended trilogy in my collection (I adored the films in theaters) and do have this set on preorder, this really does feel like a very "tentative" package, in that another upgrade or version is just around the corner within a year or so after this version is released. The biggest sign of that is the fact that almost all of the special features remain standard definition, spread across nine DVDs which, apparently, will be just lifted as-is from the existing DVD format of the Extended Editions. Granted I haven't seen the extras, but it seems as if the biggest extras, like the Costa Botes documentary, could have been presented in hi-def on the blu-ray. Also, there don't appear to be any new extras that didn't already appear on previous home video editions. And the theatrical versions of the films are still available only in a separate package, rather having both versions included in one package. It appears that many of the most useful technological advances in the blu-ray format, particularly as they relate to on-disc interactive extras, will be lost on this release, mainly because most of the extras are on DVDs. There's no mention of a picture-in-picture feature. Warner, which pioneered Maximum Movie Mode, will not extend that feature to this, the biggest franchise in the history of Warner's subsidiary, New Line. If there are any films that cry out for Maximum Movie Mode or some other system of advanced interactivity, it's these three films. This is Warner's way of finally issuing the extended editions on blu to pacify customers who've been railing for them in hi-def, but without making a very large investment, aside from remastering the first film in the series. For these reasons, I'm still thinking of canceling my preorder and waiting until there's a price drop on this set, perhaps during the holiday season. Let's put this into perspective. At Amazon this set is currently $84. When the Alien Anthology went on sale last year, I paid about $70 (and there are some places now that are selling it for about $55), and that set contains four films and a considerably larger selection of extras, which are organized and presented (some in hi-def, some in standard-def) with advanced interactivity entirely across six blu-ray discs. There are no DVDs to be found. To use another example, the Avatar collector's edition came stuffed with extras for the one film. And it had multiple versions of the film, organized and powered using seamless branching, a technology that could be used with nice results, one would assume, on the Lord of the Rings series. BTW, does this set contain the marketing material of the trilogy? Domestic and international posters? Trailers? Teasers? TV spots? I've always been interested in that aspect of a film's cycle too. In any case, I plan to acquire this package with the mindset that, while it is a very good package, and very welcome, something even better will soon be on the horizon. |

Finally new line cimema is coming to their senses and releasing the extended editions. I am a huge fan of the movies, I have the one ring in bronze, silver and gold editions along with the staff of Saruman and Galdalf the white, I even built my own palantir stand with a calcite sphere. Really cant wait along for The Hobbit 3D.

I will wait until they release JUST the movies on a single BD-50 and buy that set in a few years. I have no need to watch ALL of that extra stuff after watching a 3+ hour movie. I sold my 4-disc extended edition boxes and bought the 2-disc limited editions that WB released a few years ago and have been happy with them.
