That's really funny! I just got home from work, logged onto the site, and everyone is talking about me. Weird.

I'm sure that this has been mentioned(pretty much everything has been in this thread), but I was thinking about this earlier. It seems rather odd to me to change FOTR so drastically, and then still include the bonus stuff where they talk about how carefully they did the color grading for the Shire. It kind of seems silly to include that, since apparently it no longer applies.

Know what I mean, Vern?

P.S.: Happy 4th of July everyone!

Yes, but would Jackson and Lesnie have both missed it? It's possible, but more unlikely.

It's more than likely possible that they never saw the whole film.

Agreed. I did FOTR on Saturday, TTT yesterday and ROTK today and even that has me a bit burnt out!

Love 'em to death, but that's a lot of movie watching even across 3 days for me!

Anyway, I love the set. Looks WAY better than the DVDs (including FOTR IMO) so I'm very happy with my purchase and highly recommend it to anyone other than the diehard videophile types.

Look at the Oscars given to Scorsese (for The Departed) or Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune)... Scorsese should've won numerous times before (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas) but they kept snubbing him, then gave him the award for a remake that didn't een feel like a typical Scorsese film. Irons should've won for playing twins in Dead Ringers, but wasn't even nominated - so they give it to him 2 years later for a film no one remembers.
This happens all the time and it really irritates me. Every year I learn to stop caring about the awards.

I liked them, it was fun getting a much more "behind the scenes" look at the making of the series. The Appendices explored a ton of the making of but the Costa Botes stuff was more fun at times.

I saw a marathon of the three Theatrical cuts in a theater back in March, having done that I know there is NO way I could sit through all three EE in a row.

No one is debating that the color grading has been changed, and that would be obvious to anyone familiar with the previous home video releases of the film. It's still radically different even if you try to compensate for the overall color cast, and that's the bit I have trouble believing PJ requested.
So...what post in this thread was Bilbo reading when you captured that webcam shot that you're using for your avatar??

I did a LOTR EE marathon once with the dvds. Don't know if I could do it again! Just watched the BD of FOTR, and will watch TTT next weekend and ROTK the weekend after.

You have continuously stated the tint in FOTR is accurate because a screening at one theater subjectively looked the same based on a stranger's comment on the internet. You do realize the theatrical screening most likely used the same HD digital master that was used for the new blu-ray? The screening and blu-ray should look identical if that was the case.

The one night only screenings (presented by NCM I believe) all use digital projection from digital files. Your theory that the one-night digital screening of FOTR looked the same is not a definitive answer on whether or not the green tint was intentional.

Finally getting round to watching the return of the king, and if you look at 0:09:47 and let it play, in the bottom right hand corner there looks like a little cloaked man fishing that isn't part of the picture. Can someone please check to see if it's on their return of the king please. What is it?

idk, but i definitely think it was overlooked in the editing & post production. it's almost like it was "matted" out & forgotten to adjust or replaced as its a dark area that is seen through the extreme foreground of leaves as the camera pans up just before the title is shown. (hmmmmm...maybe replacement discs for FOTR & ROTK>...lol)

Default Whoa! I think i figured it out!!!

I figured out a FIX for EVERYONE!!! Try this, and see if the FOTR EE looks "correct" with the added color-timing, and black levels!

On our HDTV, I changed the HUE setting 6 notches to the Green side! Went from a setting at R2, over to G4. Once I did that, everything looked absolutely correct again!

Perhaps in re-authoring the FOTR EE, the default Hue setting was "off" by a few notches.

I am not kidding, try it out, and let us know what you think!

Doing this keeps the proper black levels, and resets title whites back to "white", snow whites back to "white", blue skies back to "blue", Gandalf the Grey back to "grey". It is amazing.

NOTE: Each of you may need to change the Hue by more or less than I have, but on our Sony KDL-40XBR4 it turned out to be 6 notches toward the G side of Hue.

Let us know your results

Sounds intriguing... are you saying we should try moving the hue more INTO the green? (Sorry, I'm at work atm and can't actually try this for another few hours)...

Yes. It sounds a bit crazy, but that is what I did. Our Hue goes from R to G with notches in between. From like R50 to G50. I moved it from R2 to G4 for this to work.

I just finished RoTK and it has the best transfer of the lot. I now want an untouched (color wise) version of FotR, even though I love the new one. TTT and RotK's color flowed together seamlessly and I wish that would have happened with FotR and TTT.

That is exactly my point! No offense, but it is almost weird to see that you wrote that!
