Crazy stuff. I bet If I tried to re-read the books I wouldn't like them now. Too detailed with a bunch of way out characters.

Oh I know, and that's how its described vaguely in the book and appendix of the book etc. from what I recall.

In the movie, it's more murky as you have her giving her grace to save Frodo, then the scene with the necklace and saying she chooses a mortal life, then the scene in ROTK where she drops the book and becomes cold etc., followed by Elrond saying she's dying as Sauron's power grows.

So it's murkier why she gives up her immortality, and it's definitely not clear in which of those specific moments it happens--though the scene with dropping the book and becoming cold seems most likely. But that then kind of makes the earlier scenes pointless.

Well, it's pretty clear that Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf (who all had rings) weren't under his control. Otherwise they'd have been like the Nazgul.

Now that I said that, what happened to the Dwarven kings who had rings? Why didn't they become wraiths like the 9 men?

Default My biggest head scratcher

was why they felt like the Ents needed to be fooled in order to attack Isengard. The whole deal made for a really stupid scene. They vote to do nothing but Treebeard is fooled into taking Merry and Pippin on a route that goes by Isengard where he sees the destroyed forest and calls the Ents to war.

Really dumb because....

The Ents who are in tune with everything that goes on in the forest didn't know that thousands of trees had been cut down by orcs over a period of months? Not likely.

The Ents who would have gone their separate ways after the moot instantly appear at the forest edge seconds after Treebeard's call. Huh?

The Ents immediately change their minds? Too hasty.

The Hurons immediately start moving? Who told them to gather?

There was absolutely no reason to diverge from the book.

That’s an excellent point, I should have realized that. I guess I was just wasn’t thinking which elves received their rings. But you are right, Elrond was at the battle with Isildur.

And the dwarves in general are a question mark. I mean sure, Gimli showed up, but where were the other dwarves for the battle of Middle Earth. There had to be more than there were in the mines of Moria?

I'm so glad to see the thread being some what back on topic. I love to read the discussions about the finer points of these movies.

Dwarves and the Men of Dale were attacked by Easterlings sent by Sauron and thus unable to send participants down to Gondor.

Grandbob or Radagast I'm sure can add additional information on it as I believe most of that information comes from HoME or letters; both of which I'm not nearly as familiar with as I would like.

While all this discussion about the relative merits of book to film adaptations is fascinating, this thread is supposed to be about the extended edition blu-ray releases. So, getting back to that constant green tint on the fotr extended edition blu-ray...

Tomorrow I´ll post up some screencaps taken directly from the blu-ray of the council of elrond, with the same filter as before applied to remove the green tint. Look forward to it.

Ok, thanks.

Was that indicated in the movie, or just in the book? I haven’t read the book in over 20 years and don’t remember a whole lot about it. And if it was in the movie, I guess I just missed it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was said if the ring was destroyed the elf princess (Liv Tyler) would die? So how did she turn up alive at the end of ROTK?

I was figuring it was more if Frodo fails and the ring is back in the possession of Sauron, she dies. As if Aragorn REALLY needed another reason to succeed in his mission!

I can figure it out fine. Where does it stop if we drop our standards? It isn't EAR to want people to use English correctly. Just like this sentence:

Quote:
It's lazy attitudes like that make it easy for non-English speaking people to look down on us.
Although I expect that the writer simply forgot to add the word "which". That is a bit different than taking the time to think about which homophone to use.

How would you like to read a book full of misspellings? Or what about a legal document?

So spelling isn't important to you? If you have children, or ever have children, I'm sure they'll have a bright future.

No, it was the opposite. Arwen was dying because the One Ring was still around, and she needed it to be destroyed otherwise she would die.

At least that’s how I remember it.

That’s also also one of the reasons Elrond wanted her to go to Valinor, as he said death awaited her (as he felt the quest to destroy the ring would fail).

Yes. Elrond said she was dying as Sauron grew stronger. Thus the ring needed destroyed to save her.
