And that's why i like it in a story like LOTR, it's a fantasy world in which there is some form of gods. Just my 2 cents
For that matter, why not see LotR as ultimate male escapism in which rings stand not for commitment and marriage in the laws of society and eyes of God, but alternatively for invisibility/anonymity and ultimate power and ambition depending if you're good or evil of course.

I usually don't mind gods in fantasy books unless their too directly allegories of real world organized religions. Or if they play too big a role in helping or hindering the characters as I'm just not much into that kind of supernatural divine intervention stuff. The magic in fantasy is enough, and I prefer things like Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire where the magic is more low key. And LOTR is similar on that regard as the Magic isn't very prevalent.
Yea ok i understand what you mean, i agree. If it was too clearly related to an organized religion or making links with christian stuff, i think i would also get unhook.

It would annoy me if in LOTR the actions of the characters were done or dicted by or for a religion purpose.

Thumbs up

Wieeeeeeeeeee, online retailers in Sweden are finally starting to ship LOTR EE! I'm so glad that the production delay was resorted so quickly. I guess one week of waiting isn't too bad. I'll most likely be getting it tomorrow, possibly on Friday.

Never going to happen though.

Tossing out the fact that the Tolkien Estate won't ever sell the rights... The Silmarillion is too large of a work to be easily broken down into a reasonable number of films.

Furthermore, while certain stories would be amazing to see as a film; I don't believe any of them are fully capable of standing on their own, without some heavy understanding of the events that have came before.

ie in order to fully enjoy The Children of Hurin you would need to know more about Hurin and why Morgoth hated him so (and who was Morgoth in general) and for that you would need more information about Turgon and of Gondolin. From there the floodgates open and as you learn more about one piece, it uncovers so much more that's linked and tied to it.

I think you could get it condensed down into 3 long movies by just focusing on the main story--i.e. the silmarils.

Have an intro prologue sequence that covers the creation of the world up through morgoth breaking away and destroying the trees of light and the silmarils being created etc.

Then the 3 movies would just focus on the main stories related to the silmarils being taken away and lost and the battles to get them back etc.

Maybe it would work better as a long tv mini-series or even series though to better break down the different stories.

That said, I agree it will never happen and while it could be condensed down like I suggest it would be very tricky to get it right!

+100 to that! Way better series, IMHO. I think I would hurt myself to see that on film. Too bad there probably isn't enough draw to warrant it.

Mine came from B&N today too. It's in great shape as well. When something is in transit for that long you never know what it's going to look like.

I had a similar experience at first I didn't see the tint and didn't think it was linear throughout, then I looked again and now I can't unsee it.

The fellow you are addressing had up until recently been one of the most vocal 'there is no green tint' voices on this forum. I for one congratulate him on being able to look past his initial impressions.

Just watched FOTR. Was very pleased with it. Didn't see anything that caused me to go wtf, just plain ole' enjoyable PQ. Awesome transfer IMO.

Snow looked normal to me. Also, there was no hint of green in the titles and all that.

This is the Canadian set BTW.

I've got to say, I was one of the green tint haters, but the majority of it looks fine. I still consider it a mistake, but I'll just hold onto my TE or punch up the warmth a bit on the TV for this movie. Interesting enough, now the 2nd and 3rd movies look more natural instead of the other way around like it used to be. On a side note, I've been watch the newly released It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and to be honest, that blows away any of the Lord of the Rings Blu-rays in terms of color and texture detail. There's something about those older movies, especially shot on 65-70mm or whatever it was that just looks stunning. The Ten Commandments has that look and so will Ben Hur. As good as today's film stock can be, and they are excellent, they simply can't match some of these older titles.

I was reading some wikipedia pages about The Lord of the Rings and I was wondering about the purpose (for a lack of a better word) of Valinor. I remember in the movies it was said the elves would go there never to return.

Was it a choice for them to go there and never return? If the elves did go there, are they allowed to return to Rivendell or wherever they are from? What if the elves didn't want to go to Valinor? Is it a requirement of all elves?

Valinor was basically the land of gods and angels (elves, wizards etc.). Kind of a heaven on earth thing. Not actual heaven were the gods resided, but the closest to that on earth. If I recall correctly, the elves started there and then some left for middle earth with the Silmarils and others followed etc.

I'm sure Grand Bob and others can be mor detailed, but that was the gist I got from reading the Silmarillion a good while back (so my memory isn't very fresh).

As for the elves' choice, I think they could choose to stay like Arwen did, though it would mean losing their immortality.

dmaul1114, thanks for the reply.

You mentioned that if they choose to stay then they will lose their immortality... so technically the elves are not immortal while on Middle Earth but instead just have an extended lifespan while becoming immortal when they reach Valinor?

Valinor is essentially Heaven. Middle-earth is this Earth, just the middle time period. It was just their time to go there, as it was the time for Men on Earth, which is us and our time. Also, I think they may have left to avoid all of the contrast/tint issues and arguments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valinor

Edit: dmaul beat me to it, but yes Grand Bob could probably explain it better.
