Wouldnt we all, but I do hope the actual individual cases they come in are nice like the original 4-disc dvd sets.

They are split on 2 discs because more discs keeps the price higher then 1 disc. Those greedy bastards
It is a joke to split these movies on 2 discs when long movies has shown that there is no problem just take a look at king Kong and it also has a PiP track on the PQ is reference quality warner you freaking suck! |

1. Separately encode 2D and 3D versions when a 2D version can easily be extracted from the 3D core (example all of Disneys 3D Blu-Rays) 2. Separately encode two cuts of the movie when seemless branching could easily encode both cuts into alot less space (example Terminator Salvation) 3. Use separte discs for DVD and digital copy when digital copies could easily fit on the same disc as the DVD (again Disney is a frequent offender) Believe me the decision to still spread Lord of the Rings over two discs is in the same mindset. It also saves money on the encode. Lowering the bitrate without introducing softness or compression artifacting requires work. A high bitrate encode is alot cheaper and using more discs is a more percieved value. It makes sense from a business standpoint why this set is using way more discs then needed I just wish more consumers would recognize this |

Added value is one thing, it does not change the fact that Warner sets the price, not the number of discs.
If it was 3 blu-rays, the exact same feature set and the exact same price, no one is going to say "well it has all the movies and extras i want, but there's just NOT ENOUGH DISCS". (not sure what would give someone the idea that anyone's hand-tuning these encodes at WB either) Last edited by 42041; 03-23-2011 at 10:34 PM. |

Also all encodes are hand tuned. The bitrate constantly fluctuates because not every scene needs the same bitrate depending on things like motion, film grain, color, objects on screen, etc. The higher the bitrate used the less work needs to be done at this. |

I see so much rampant compression artifacting on most WB discs compared to other studios that I can only assume that (with perhaps a handful of exceptions), the bulk of their encodes is done on autopilot and the fastest/lowest-quality settings. |

Once someone gets the discs and posts how many gigs of actual movie are on each disc. I do not trust Warner to optimize anything, so it should be interesting. I could see them doing something like 26 gigs of movie on a BD50. lol |

Furthermore, I am going to buy these when they come out because: 1) I don't want to wait several years for an ultimate set when I can be watching these as soon as they come out. 2) Nobody, but NOBODY can be sure that there will be an ultimate set some years hence. And if WB had brought the EEs out on one disc each, the same ones complaining about 2 discs would complain about 1 disc each. Complaining is a hobby for some folks. Also the whole 'digital copy' BS - it makes a 2 or 3 disc set look like a 3 or 4 disc set...ooh more value! To be honest, pressing DVDs is so cheap these days - and heck, they may have even had these suckers literally left over from previous releases. I'm sure it's a combination of these two things - it likely would cost more to copy them all onto 1 or 2 BD's and encoding a Blu or two than just using the old ones on DVD (either existing or replicated again). |

Why is everyone complaining about the extended edition finally getting released? I mean as a fan of the triology I don't care about them being split into 2 bd's. I've been waiting for them a long time! and yes it was stupid to add dvds. I'll blast up my home theater on June 28
