I enjoy the Matrix Trilogy more than the Rings Trilogy because, to me, they don't overstay their welcome.
That's just how I feel on the matter. I will always adore the Fellowship Extended Edition but that's about as far as I go with the Rings series. |

Anyone else having issues with Fellowship of the Ring? I watched about a hour of the movie yesterday with no problems. Today I put it in my Blu Ray player and I get the spinning disc, and then the screen is blank. I don't even get the menu.
I tried ejecting the disc and reinserting it, but that didn't do anything. I also tried shutting the player off and turning it back on. Any thoughts on what else I can do? |

You're in luck...I have the same player. We need a firmware update to correct this but there is a work around for it. When you are at the blank screen just press the right arrow that is next to your enter button. That should bring up the menu. If you just want to play the movie just hit enter when the black screen comes up. Try it and let me know if that works.

I watched most of Fellowship last night. The new color timing is evident, of course, in many places. I noticed aspects of the costumes, for example, aside from whites being toned down, the sky being more of a bluish-teal (although nothing like the screenshots I have seen). The snow maybe having a very slight tint to it, but I didn't find an issue with it. On my ISF calibrated display, it was very subtle. I really do think these changes were intended especially as the changes are more evident in certain scenes other than others. The movie looks a bit too similar to other modern movies it seems; however, after watching some scenes of the theatrical, the scenes seem so empty as if no grading was applied. The color does give a certain atmosphere. The brightness and whites are blown out in the theatrical BD, as well. All in all, I prefer the new color although in a few scenes I'm not sure. Shadow, contrast, and brightness is excellent. Some of the detail is phenomenal. Very film-like presentation. Looking forward to watching the next two movies.
I do believe they probably applied a subtle green tint to the entire film (title included) in an attempt to tone down the whites which were too bright. Doing this was probably a lot faster than going frame by frame. They then probably went back and tweaked various scenes accordingly. However, as mentioned, I am not seeing any sort of extreme tinting seen in the screenshots which do look horrible. I do think if your display is not properly ISF calibrated, you could be seeing some stranger things with this teal. A scewed grayscale more toward green or blue for example could really make some of the scenes appear way too odd. Last edited by HeavyHitter; 07-08-2011 at 01:36 PM. |

Yup, I had the same issue - played through disk 1 with no issues (multiple resumes). Got to disk 2 - watched about 30 minutes - came back to try and resume, black screen. I'll try the fix mentioned above but Sony def needs to send a firmware update (I had to switch over to my PS3 to watch the rest). I dont know what model it is exactly, its a 3d Sony that I got from DMR (its a Sony BDP-s470)

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/59616 Discuss/argue about the green tint till were blue in the face but the fact remains that there were apparently always color differences between the flashback sequences (differences we apparently never cared about before, or never noticed because their only now being brought to attention of most forum-goers); so trying to use the differences now to prove a "mistake" is an invalid argument. |

Settle down. It's been explained a dozen times why people would rather have each film on one disc that doesn't involve not wanting to "get off their lazy asses". If you don't have anything to add and just want to get irate, maybe it's not worth bothering. The packaging? Oh yes, that's the first time we've heard about the packaging in this thread. That really takes it to the next level. ![]() Why does it bother you so much that people want fewer discs? Less clutter, less chance of one botched disc ruining the second. It represents progress. VHS to DVD I didn't need to switch tapes and rewind Braveheart anymore. It's a newer format with a potentially colossal amount of disc space. It would be nice if that culminated in big films on one disc. It doesn't, so that disappoints people. Why do you have to be such an apologist for it? Why do you need to dismiss people as being "lazy" if they have an issue with it? Obviously a lot of people think of it as a negative, resulting in some negative feedback on their reviews. You're happy with your set? Awesome. Fantastic. So you shouldn't need to look for arguments. |

The Matrix is not a trilogy. It's one excellent film and two excruciatingly awful movies tinted with green slime.

I think what he meant was that they could have put all the extras on two blu-rays instead of nine DVDs. Now that I think about it, they could have but it doesn't matter to me because I will probably never watch any of them. I just care about the movies.

Right, but they could have condensed each set's 3 DVDs worth of clutter into one Blu-ray. Blu-ray serves more of a purpose than just displaying high definition picture and sound. It's not like they never put SD content on Blu-ray anyway.

It bothers me simply because if those voices demanding one disc were loud enough, studios might want to shy away from putting quality first. Granted with the LOTR EE trilogy, as long as PJ is alive, that will probably not happen. But in general terms it does advocate a trend from quality and towards convenience. Which is the exact same trend of moving away from physical media to digital distribution. I have nothing against digital copies or having things on one disc. I just want the best quality possible. I don't support blu-ray because I like Sony. I don't support it because I like the name, or even care about physical formats. I support it because as of right now, it is the medium that offers the highest potential for quality. Expecting a proportional quality jump (in relation to increased capacity)from DVD to blu-ray seems like a pretty normal expectation. So seeing people get upset about this being on 2 discs, after the DVDs were on two, just confuses me. If you like blu-ray because it offers more capacity and you're more jazzed about fitting the most stuff on one disc, then fine. I recall a lot of people being confused when TV shows first came out on blu-ray. why entire seasons weren't put on one disc. So I know these people exist. I just disagree with them about what validates blu-rays existence. |

But then the player wouldnt be able to upscale the SD content the way it does with the DVD.
