AFAIK, you can hit the Enter button on your player to resume the playback, but the menu won't appear.
Cool, maybe I'll go home tonight and play around with it a little bit and see if I can get my player to resume. Thanks fellas.

Like what? "Problems" always get talked about way more than anything else. The AQ is great, just as it has been with every other release. The increase in PQ detail is appreciable in this release, but that has been talked about and pretty much universally agreed upon several weeks back.... so there's nothing to "debate" when it comes to these things. Without talk about the specifics of the technical problems the thread would be:

Quote:
AQ is great!
Quote:
Yeah, it's great.
Quote:
PQ detail is nice.

It's great, yep.
This is the noly thread for technical discussion about this release after all. If anyone has any other questions about the specifics of this release (audio, video, packaging, etc.) I can pretty much guarantee it'll be answered quickly if posted. The reason there's not much of this is because there's very little to ask or talk about in this regard. It's not really the fault of the people talking about the tint/contrast issues that no one has come in and talked about anything else. If you want to, feel free. No one is screaming at you to stop talking about the story or anything.

The resume feature that is apparently on this disc but I can't seem to get it on my player... does it only work with certain players or is mine just too old? Or is it a possiblilty that that may be fixed with a firmware update?

If I push stop while the disc is playing, and then I press play again, just like all of my other BD-J discs it makes me start from the beginning and doesn't give me the "Resume playback" option.

I have a Sony BDP S350 and a BDP S360 and its the same way on both.

Anyone know?
This might help you. The issue seems to be common to many of the Sony players. Shouldn't take them long to update.

I know that Grand Bob posted his review of this set a few days ago, but I would really like to hear several other people's opinions on this. Namely, Duffy12, radagast, threefiftyrocket, and Velmeran, among others.

These guys are some of the hard core Tolkienites around here, and I would really value their opinion on this matter. From little snippets I've read here and there, I think most of them are disappointed with the aforementioned problem, but have avoided this thread because of all the circular arguing and fighting that has been going on here.

I totally understand why they feel that way, but I also understand that the people on here obsessively complaining about the problems are mostly only doing so because they care so much about these movies, and they want their voices heard, so that we can get a disc replacement, or at least something definitive from Peter Jackson himself.

I think in the end, a lot of us have similar opinions on this matter, just different ways of dealing with it.

So come on everybody,

P.S.- I'll ask Stinky to keep his shirt on, and no choke-holds, but I can't promise anything.

No one said it's the same thing. Discussing the green/lack of yellow tint is relevant to the subject and trying to browbeat people into submission so they feel like they can't discuss the tint issue is irrelevant and negatively impacting the discussion because it leads to posts like this.

I just really wish that some of the real Tolkien fans on here would come forward, and speak their mind about their opinions on this set, and tell us what they really think about this whole package.

I think that they should reclaim this thread, but I also think that there is room for all of us to share.

They would, but I believe they've left these shores, never to return. I don't know why, it makes me sad.

Anyone else having problems with Disc 2 of Fellowship of the Rings? It won't play in my Sony BDP-S570 with the latest firmware. It goes from the disc spinning icon to showing 1 second on the unit diplay and then does nothing.

I don't think you're the first person I've seen on this thread asking about the S570. I bet it's a firmware issue. I did see a fix a while ago, but seeing as how bloated this thread is, I don't know where it is anymore

Sorry I can't be of any further assistance, but at least you know you're not alone...

I tried it in my S370 same thing.

For whatever reason, it won't display the Menu. If you click OK, it starts the film. Problem solved I guess. Or good enough.

Doing a search of the thread I did not come up with any good hits.

Oh, my apologies - I could have swore that I read about this issue already. Your fix sounds like another one that I've read too. Perhaps the post was deleted for some reason?

EDIT: It looks like Stinky Dinkins found the post I was thinking of and erroneously referred to.

Thanks for the help Mr. Dinkins!

I posted this in 10056. It will provide you with a full work around until Sony addresses it, probably in a couple of weeks. I can't believe people are actually trying to return their sets because of this issue.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-pl...ml#post4912737

May I suggest that you inform Sony via email if you have this issue with your player. It may help get the fix out a little faster. I am in contact with them on the BDP S570 only. I told them the problem is widespread and affects other Sony players as well. If you don't want to provide them with a detailed explanation, just refer to Case ID 1652581 and tell them it affects your player as well.

I haven't run through all the posts since the one above (to see if anyone did what I was thinking of doing), but I was curious as to what was actually done to the beloved TFOTR-EE Blu-ray. Here is my observation using those above captures:

This first is ohlawds's EE on DVD (left) to EE on Blu-ray (right) comparison with a paint-program chart added below each:

Notice that the DVD has a full luminance spectrum, while the Blu-ray is compressed. That shows that the darkened picture is not a side-effect of the green tinting, but a separate, additional process.

Next, I un-made (expanded) the luminance compression of the Blu-ray range (adjustment shown in red) to match the DVD range:

Not half bad, right? The release might have gotten away with the green tinting if the result looked this good. (The assumption here is that the tinting, of menus and all, was a Peter Jackson artistist decision -- in which case he should be buried right next to George Lucas! )

Finally, I tried a fix on the original DVD because that is not supposed to be Gandalf The Brown! by reducing the RED CHANNEL with a slight lightening of shadow in the BLUE CHANNEL:

Now, that's Gandalf The Grey with the rest of Middle-earth lookin' pretty good, too!

So, next time, PJ, call the great Aruman ... of many colors! first (reach me at my Orthanc).

You might be right, but, it is worth posting a review at wbshop.com. There is speculation that the coloring took place at Warner in Burbank, not in NZ. See page 880 of the Penton-Man thread for details if you're interested.
