That is kind of what I meant by "I hope." What is the point if the quality is not as good?

Hope all you want. The idea of having physical media is ingrained into most people's heads. There are many problems with downloads:

1) Compression. Someone will have to pull off quite a techie achievement to come up with a codec that will look as good as a great Blu-ray.

2) Storage. People want to KEEP a movie. Where are you going to keep it? Are you going to keep buying more and more external hard drives to store movies?

agreed Alice looks fantastic in 3D

are they really converting LOTR trilogy in 3D?
hope it comes on BD 3D at the same time it hits the theaters

Heres Peter Jackson on the matter

"About three years ago, we tried converting about 10 minutes of “King Kong” [into 3D] and it turned out okay. We were happy with the results, but it was expensive at the time, certainly too expensive to do the whole movie. But you can do conversions well if you take time. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is an example of one that was done really well. You just have to take the appropriate amount of time, and time is obviously money. So if you do it quickly, fast and cheap, and it’s not going to turn out well. If we were going to convert LOTR, I’d want to do it properly, which would be a very long, time-consuming, and expensive process" Peter Jackson

They haven't officially announced it yet but Peter Jackson has numerous times expressed his desire to convert the trilogy to 3D. He is a big fan of 3D and is shooting the Hobbit with red epic 5k 3D cameras. The studio hasn't yet approved the measure so most likely we won't see the trilogy in 3D until after The Hobbit movies hit theatres.

Id say the eventual conversion is inevidible. With a directer that passionatly wants it, a studio who rarely misses an opportunity to sell the same movies again, and an ever growing 3D market I say its eventually bound to happen

I hope so. I'd love the movies to watch every now and then in 3D.

So...looks like LOTR trilogy will be a triple BLU dip for me lol

1)Theatrical cut release...

2)Upcoming Extended release... I'm pre-ordered.

3)3D conversion release... whenever..

Ah well, $200 odd bucks well worth it to watch any edition depending on my mood.

I doubt in 5 years that all Internet/3G/4G whatever worldwide will have enough speed and bandwidth for streaming/downloading.. that requires a complete overhaul of ALL Internet services, and everything will have to go wireless, because the cables underground now can't support it. Have fun paying for data by the mb.

Peter Jackson will not allow a shoddy or cheap conversion. I garuntee when Lord of the Rings are converted they will look great.
Alice looked good in 3D but it didn't look realistic... the strange sense of odd depth with the synthesized 3D actually served the dream-like mood of the film. Basically, the artifacts of 3D conversion happened to benefit the overall impression of un-reality.

I haven't seen the 3D version of the new Narnia so I can't comment on that. However every other 3D conversion I've seen has left me very unimpressed (including many often-praised conversions like Nightmare before christmas).

Good 3D has won me over: Native 3D can be stunning and is absolutely the next step forward for video reproduction since color and high-resolution media.

Given the popularity of 3D computer animation and native 3D live-action, I can't see why it would lose ground. Now that the horrors of bad red/blue composite 3D are behind us, we can finally enjoy 3D in the theater *and* home with true fidelity. If anything, 3D gaming and continued advances in technology that make 3D products less and less expensive will only allow it to gain market share.

I think most people who expect this wave of the 3D "fad" to fail like it did in the past completely misunderstand how the technology has changed in the last decade.
That said, it has yet to be proven that 3D conversions of old movies are going to pull in enough of a crowd to justify the effort. Personally I don't have much interest in retroactive 3D.

3D is the first thing hollywood has done to change the way films are presented that gives people head-aches.

Surround sound, colour, widescreen, etc - these were all well-received. 3D, not so much. I could take it or leave it, personally. I don't care much. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out because I know a lot of haters that aren't big movie snobs. They just dislike it.

Actually much of the same stuff was said. History is written by the winners...

Also they didn't have internet forums in the 30s and 50s
When 3D movies are some of the biggest money-makers of the last 2 years it's pretty obvious that that the vocal internet pundits and the average movie-goer are not on the same page.

Oh really? Guess my film class must have been wrong - and I don't mean that sarcastically.

Film class textbooks are written by snobs, I should know, I took one, boy was that author full of himself. But that seems pretty typical at the university level. Ok, rant done.

Awesome news.

Althouuughhh..... I kinda spent like ~$80 for the theatricals on Blu-ray (it was the Best Buy one with the Anduril letter opener) and the Extendeds are already coming out... I've only watched the Blu-rays of the theatricals like once. Kind of a waste... but at the end of the day I'm still glad to own both versions haha.
