I finally got a chance to see FOTR at my house (my brother brought it over) and don't regret for a second my decision not to pay a penny for this garbage.

Yes. It's green. Everywhere. All the colors are wrong, as a result. If you compare it with the DVD, your eyes will thank you every time the ugly green color goes away.

What I wasn't expecting is how dark it is - so dark that many details were wiped away and, indeed, there were some shots where I couldn't even tell what I was looking at.

Who mastered this? A blind monkey?

Anyway, I'm not interested in re-starting a useless pro/anti green argument - just thought I'd throw my $0.02 in now that I've actually seen the thing.

Too bad there's no chance for individual releases. I could stick with the DVD of the extended cut for FOTR, and then pop in Blus for the Extended Editions of Towers and King. But I'm not buying the set as is. Jackson is answering his "20 questions" on Facebook right now, but can't personally make a statement?

He needs to clear this issue soon...yes he is busy, but if he can take the time to answer the questions on FB, why cant he just make a statement or just ask his PR dept to issue a statement regarding this issue to settle things down? Is he climbing Mount Doom?

Because those questions are about The Hobbit and only The Hobbit.

Haha sneaky sneaky!

A quick statement would calm the "Great eye, lidless, wreathed in flame".

People are acting like this is some huge scandal. It's really just some people on A/V enthusiast sites like this complaining about it.

The vast majority of people buying this set have no idea about any green tint issue.

Blu-ray has gone mainstream. The A/V enthusiasts are no longer the main part of the market anymore so studios don't have to worry so much when the videophiles are ranting on sites like this and AVS forums etc.

And this is exactly why studios like WB won't give a rat's behind about complaints, even if they are legitimate.

Possibly, but that same monkey managed to master the second two films to excellent standard. Must be why WB has him on the payroll.

Bottom line to this is simple. Studios care about what costs them money. This has yet to cost them any significant loss as the Blu-ray sales have shown.

Exactly - if we can't notice, our eyes adjust, blah blah, then it's a waste of time AT BEST.

I'm still holding on to hope that they will quietly do a replacement program. I would never expect them to pull product at the height of the promotion schedule. Financially, it's much easier to absorb that way. I'd be curious what the percentages of replacements fulfilled on other disks like Gladiator or Saving Private Ryan. Yea, they effed it up. This wasn't intentional tinting, or even worse for me, the dark crush. The disparity is so apparent when you pop in TTT after FOTR. Even the casual videophile will notice after the novelty of seeing what is still an improved transfer regardless of FOTR.
The shame for WB is it could have been so much better. Here's hoping they do the right thing for reputation's sake.

I always looked at the Extended Edition as the "Director's Cut" of Jackson's films. Its very unsatisfying to see Saruman walk away in the theatrical version, which would've made sense had Jackson not done away with The Scourging of The Shire!

Except that Jackson views the Theatricals as his "Director's Cuts" and the Extended Editions as simply for the big fans.

Agreed though that the majority of the additions improve the films. They're without a doubt my preferred versions.

Having watched the extended FOTR and TT so far after having watched the theatricals last time around, they are just so much different and feel complete. The theatricals feel so incomplete - I cannot watch them again.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but i noticed that IMDB have 3 versions listed, all with different run times. I am aware obviously of the theatrical and the extended editions (178m and 208m) but there is a third 228min special extended blu-ray edition.

Is this whats presented on the extended blu ray? I noticed blu-ray.com have 208 minutes listed.

Is this 228 out there? Or is it just a typo?

Thanks.

Based on some of the titles in your collection, I think you will enjoy them a lot. TE vs EE is a whole other thing. From what I've seen most fans prefer the EE cuts of the films. I find that I prefer the EE cuts myself but if they had only released the TE cuts ( which I bought as well) I would have been content as they are still remarkable films in that version. If you can get the TE real cheap, as in below $20, I feel you should check them out. If you can't find a bargain you should go the rental, borrow, streaming route to see if you like them.
