Default New Green-Tint Fix Confirmation Results

One example: when Legolas takes down the troll with his arrow, you'd be left wondering what just happened if it was your first viewing. Where did he shoot his arrow? Where's the arrow? No expression on the trolls face, just a groan. Coppola did this with the Dracula blu-ray, but not to this extent.
Yeah,

As I posted before (post was understandably removed by mods, so I cannot reference it - but this post has new helpful info ), I watched the FOTR and TTT the other day when I got food poisoning. As I describe in the post below, the issue REALLY appears to be that PJ re-color-graded the FOTR in such a way the appears to have unintentionally emphasized an issue that people may not have been aware of on their HDTV's Hue settings. It seems that if you adjust the Hue on your HDTV -- if it was actually "off" a bit -- you can FIX the green tint issue. The issue is that your HDTV was actually mis-calibrated in the Hue settings, so the green tint shows up for you.

As I describe below, try watching the FOTR, and adjusting your Hue to see if you can get Gandalf's hat to look Grey, the snow to look more white, and the sky to look more blue. When you do, everything will be ok, and TTT, and I expect ROTK will also still look spot on!

NOTE: Be sure to write down the original Hue setting before adjusting it -- in case you want to go back to it.

More than a few people tried this after I originally posted it, and got GREAT results!

On our HDTV, I changed the HUE setting 6 notches to the Green side! Went from a setting at R2, over to G4. Once I did that, everything looked absolutely correct again!

Perhaps in re-authoring the FOTR EE, the default Hue setting was "off" by a few notches.

I am not kidding, try it out, and let us know what you think!

Doing this keeps the proper black levels, and resets title whites back to "white", snow whites back to "white", blue skies back to "blue", Gandalf the Grey back to "grey". It is amazing.

NOTE: Each of you may need to change the Hue by more or less than I have, but on our Sony KDL-40XBR4 it turned out to be 6 notches toward the G side of Hue.

Let us know your results

I will try the hue adjustment thing. I wonder how it will affect the scenes that look normal??

Surprised that only one person has responded to my claim that the 3 films look very much alike, and that the green hue is very present in all of them? Why are there 500+ pages only talking about FOTR?

If it makes any difference, I did the Hue adjustment for FOTR, and DID NOT NEED TO CHANGE IT BACK for other Blus, DVDs, etc.

So that said, it appears the green tint is actually a slight mis-calibration on individual HDTVs that PJ's FOTR "color tuning" has simply emphasized unintentionally.

Try it though first, before you become convinced.

I just received this set from amazon, opened it just now. Very disappointed to discover that at least half of the DVDs are scratched in some way. I'm sure it won't affect playback (at least I *hope* not!) but it's not very good for a deluxe set such as this. The blu-rays in the set are perfect.

Anyone else with scratched discs?

Looking forward to giving them a spin!

Mine came out mint from the box. My Ten Commandents looked like they had been polished with a grindstone but that's another thread.

Because everyone was instructed not to talk about the green tint issue unless something significant and new happened (like PJ commenting on it, for example.) Also, the other two movies are faithful to their original color timings and do not have a consistent green tint, this has been proven time and time again with screen captures, FotR is the only one that has been altered in this way. It's likely you're mistaking areas that have been individually digitally graded to be green (in which one portion of the image is selectively altered) as a blanket green tint. All 3 movies have always had digitally graded portions (some very green, or blue, or red, etc.) but this is independent of the consistent tint in Fellowship.

I have the same problem.
I've bought them from Romania and is the same box from US with only the case's covers in Romanian.
2 or 3 of the DVDs had scratches on them and one of them had a little playback problem in one spot. I tried to copy it on my HDD and after some retrys it went trough.
The BluRay disc are OK.

Anyone else have freezing issues with the FOTR Disc 5 DVD Documentary at 1:11:35? It's just after Sean Bean (a.k.a. Boromir) has the arrow attached to his chest. My copy jumps 15 minutes straight to the end credits of the presentation.

I'm playing it back on my PS3.

Looks like I'll be contacting WB about it. The disc has some weird pattern lining 1/2 of the circumference along the outer edge of the reflective side. It's about 3/4 thick. It's embedded within the disc itself.

The BluRay disc are OK.
One of the best things about leaving DVD behind as a format, from a functional point of view, is the massive amount of scratched discs I used to see, especially in box sets.

It sucks that such a great set is plagued with the same problems :-(

Just finished ROTK last night. It was definitely a trreat to watch these again. I probably read the books ten times growing up & they are my favorite books of all time. PJ did a great job on them for the most part.

I'd forgotten how intense the second half of ROTK was. The AQ was amazing on all three movies & the PQ was excellent on 2 out of the three for me.

As do I......

His excuse for not telling me about the deal was that "it was late". I wouldnt care if it was 3 am and he called to tell me. Thankfully he let me borrow them.
