Default maybe, but...

Cinema has always had (at least until recently) certain level of opacity in the image, caused by the very nature of its mechanism, which of course helps to hide those kind of fine details.

But now the bluray not only allow us to have it in almost perfect clarity, but also to examinate more.

I'm sorry, I was just being a little silly. Earlier, he had refered to the fact that if you're not happy with the presentation of the EE BD of LOTR, that Walmart would let you return it, and he gave some odd examples of things that they let him return, and then all of this happened.

I know Joe. Lets just stick to the LOTR EE topic before it gets out of hand

Is it just me, or are the audio dynamics overall, and especially in the LFE, a little more consistent on this release than the EE DVD? I no longer have the DVDs, but I kind of recall it being more anemic in one scene, and then about to blow my speakers out the next. I'm not implying that it used to be more dynamic, it just seems to be more balanced on the blu-ray. Any thoughts?

Edit: Well technically, I guess I am implying that it was more dynamic.

it's not just you. I too felt the LFE on the DVD EE was a bit "meh". But on this release it's superb.

I cant even give a fair opinion on that considering how long its been since I watched the dvds. I would have to think the actual mix is the same, but who knows.

I think you are right, and I always remember the Dvd's lossy dolby digital soundtracks being a little on the brightside.

Both the theatrical and extended editions Dts master audio tracks are far better, and as you say more consistent.

Also the new extended edition is a 6.1 discrete mix rather than the 6.1 matrixed soundtack offered by the theatrical version.

just got a sweet deal on this. My local F.Y.E. had a brand new set mis-priced at the used price of $71.99. I got my 10% V.I.P. discount which brought it down to $64.79 then I used a 30% off one used DVD coupon bringing it down to $45.36. With tax I paid just $49.90 for this set.

Has the green tint issue been addressed or fixed yet?

Wondering if I should put this in my Amazon cart with Star Wars

If this is a concern, you should probably wait for reviews of the SW set as well

All reports indicate current blu-ray players have hardware incompatible with BR 100GB discs, so there seems to be a slim chance to see them used for films anytime soon. Since everyone would most likely need to buy a new player to watch them.

IMHO, you are missing out big time. But hey, you waiting for your perfect set, does not impede my enjoyment of the set that exists. I love it.

I agree. I watched the first film on two different HDTVs (both running different settings) running two different brands of BD players, and the PQ is nothing like the screenshots. There's no noticible green tint. I only "noticed" in some scenes because of the outcry from this forum. Even then, I think it was a placebo effect. It really depends on how the player/tv is set up to see the "mistakes in colour timing" people are whining about. If something like this ruins films for people, then that's their loss. It's still a fantastic set, and I enjoy and appreciate that they have released the EE BDs.

Oh well, we can hope in the future 100Gb will be the way. I still might pick this up if I can get a good deal like a previous poster claimed to have or price comes down a bit more.

But we all know this will not be the final LOTR EE on blu-ray. I know it will be a good while, but I would hope the next release will be done just right.

From what I've read, the 100gb BD discs are designed for data archival, and there are no plans to use it for movies. Makes sense. Since you can get most movies on a BD-50, what would the point be of making every BD player out there obsolete? The industry wants it to succeed, not piss off customers.

In January 2007, Hitachi showcased a 100 GB Blu-ray Disc, consisting of four layers containing 25 GB each.[147] Unlike TDK and Panasonic's 100 GB discs, they claim this disc is readable on standard Blu-ray Disc drives that are currently in circulation, and it is believed that a firmware update is the only requirement to make it readable to current players and drives.[148]

In December 2008, Pioneer Corporation unveiled a 400 GB Blu-ray Disc (containing 16 data layers, 25 GB each) that will be compatible with current players after a firmware update. Its planned launch is in the 2009–10 time frame for ROM and 2010–13 for rewritable discs. Ongoing development is under way to create a 1 TB Blu-ray Disc as soon as 2013.[149]

There are ways to put movies like LOTR in fewer discs. And I really don't get why they haven't started already. Especially on TV series, having huge Blu-ray discs would help reduce the size of those ugly box-sets and it would be more practical.

I'd love complete seasons on 1-2 discs

Thanks for outstanding and informative post. I will not be buying this until they get it right. There is absolutely no excuse,in this day/age, with all our advances in tech, to keep splitting long movies.

The very least they could have done was give us each film's extras on their own single BD. As far as I'm concerned this is nothing more than a repackaged EE DVd, only the movies are on the latest format.

In the end, the answer is: money money money! Save money by using already created products, and gouge money by making costumers pay for more discs.

Which is the main reason to buy the movie on Blu-Ray. The main point of Blu-Ray is to have the movie in HD with better picture/sound quality. I'm not saying I wouldn't have preferred that they put each movie on 1 disc and all of the bonus features for each movie on 1 disc, but it's not really that big of a deal.
