Yeah, I did the same. By the time it hit the half-way point, it was the weekend and I was like screw it, let's get to it!

I wish I didn't have so many other movies to catch up on because I'd watch the whole trilogy again this week. These movies are gold.

If it's so great, then why was it filmed in straight letterbox format? That kind of thing won't even fill any kind of HD screen at all; it'll be a speck in the frame by comparison.

Maybe more recent interviews with the cast members, throw in the Howard Shore music DVD, have Fran Walsh participate in a commentary, maybe even a few hints on the production of the Hobbit movies...just a few ideas.

And puh-leeeeeeezee.....absolutely NO crude or obscene "spoofs"! Those things are garbage, plain and simple.
Its better to have the movie split onto two disks at least we can get maximum picture quilty

Agreed, but I wasn't talking about the actual films being split in my earlier post. Each of the original Appendices discs were 9GB DVDs, so unless they were loaded to max, all 6 of them should fit onto a single 50GB Blu-Ray disc. They could also have included all the Costa Botes docs on a separate BD as well, to lower the overall disc count, and thus the price as well.

Um, it's great because it is a very informative look at the filming of these movies. A kinda fly on the wall scenario instead of interviews with people. If you can't get past the letterbox format, then I feel sorry for you. As far as recent interviews go, what's the point? The Appendices are so well done I don't think we need a retrospective piece for at least another 10 to 15 years.

I'm definitely not a "foolscreen" advocate these days. Once I learned the truth behind the formats, I picked up on it fairly quickly, and most (if not all) of my collection is in widescreen. However, from what I've heard - and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong - a standard "letterbox" image doesn't adapt to the width of your screen, the way anamorphic versions do. So, what's the point in using letterbox for anything on a hi-def format?

Hi, new user here! Though I've been reading the pages here for a long time.
I've made a guide (yes, a very serious one) for those who bought the blu-ray box and want to know how to fix some of the issues with FOTR themselves.
I'm very experienced in the matter, so those who feel sceptic should at least check the comparison screenshots.

The site is fotrfix.blog.com and to those who like it: make sure to spread the word! My posts are getting removed all the time from forums like this.

Yeah, that's shocking! Seeing as how you're only coming here to promote another website.

Why don't you just openly share your "experience" on this forum, rather than making us go to another?

Troy,

Did you click over to You_Too's fotrfix.blog.com site? It contains very helpful information about correcting the image quality issues with LOTR during playback. And the information is a bit too complex than is appropriate for a forum post. Plus I don't think he can link anything from the forum because he's too new.

However, the reason I think his messages are getting deleted is because his fix requires ripping the LOTR Blu-ray to your hard drive. Blu-ray.com frowns on those sorts of discussions.

Still, since You_Too is discussing the way to correct the movie during playback from hard drive and NOT discussing how to rip the discs, I feel his link should be allowed. Based on his before/after screenshot comparisons, he's done an outstanding job at adjusting the color and contrast issues!

Mark

First of all, I'm not promoting anything. I simply made that guide to help those who wanted to fix the movie themselves. And in the end it felt better to link it than to post a wall of text.

And to Mark: Thanks a lot for appreciating what I did.

I have to be honest, I was hesitant to click on the link at first too, but I decided to do it anyway and I can appreciate the hard work that went into creating this. Good job.

Just like the Alien set i agree with you there. That does not put fans off from picking up the set

Okay, thanks to Mark, I clicked on the link. I have to admit, what you've done is pretty stunning. Although, after visiting that page I still say you could have put all that info here and just spoiler tagged it. That way it would open for those who wanted to see it and not take up a wall of text. If you've been reading through this thread then you should know there's been some marathon posts throughout. Either way, I'm glad you found a way to correct this that satisfies you and based on what I've read here, others will surely appreciate it and use your fix.

Thumbs up Finally finished LOTR: FOTR

From my review thread, I posted this the other day:

================================================== ===================================

Just finished (about 25-30 mins ago) the first LOTR movie, FOTR. If you recall, I'd watched the 1st disc a few weeks ago & it took longer than anticipated to get to disc 2.

I can safely say that any of that rubbish talk about green tint or "hue" is just that: Rubbish. IF anything, it's really in the Just first part of the 1st disc where they're still in the village with all the lush greens of the landscape, trees, etc. Ask me, & it all looks beautiful, very vibrant, & detailed.

As for the 6.1 DTS-HD MA track, holy crap !! Talk about a Stupendous, Thunderous, while still being Impeccably Detailed, audio track. Unbelievable sound. Your Subs will get a workout like never before my friends.

My Final Numbers:
Movie: 3 of 5
Video: 4.5 of 5
Audio: 5 of 5

=================================================

I hope to start on the 2nd/3rd films very shortly...

The extended editions have 2 hours 3 minutes more movie, collectively, not counting the end credits, so it's almost like getting a whole extra movie's worth of stuff.

Hey guys I posted this in the UK thread but haven't had a reply. I've edited my original post slightly.

One thing I did notice though, has anyone noticed the pop-ups for the scene selection? The one with Bilbo and Gandalf (it's in the first half dozen chapters)at the table shows the windows in the background and there's definitely white in the tiny thumbnail. Were these the same as the theatrical scene selections thumbnails? I assume they would have done new thumbnails for the extended scenes. It just seems odd that the two images don't match.

Fantastic looking set and I'm going to watch the Costa Botes documentaries this weekend, as I haven't seen them before. I'm trying to get my family to watch the films over six nights but they don't seem interested.
Update: I started watching the behind the scenes stuff on my 4:3 CRT in my bedroom and the Costa Botes documentary for Fellowship is great, I'm looking forward to watching the rest. Thrilled to bits with the price of the set, one of our Supermarkets in the UK has it on offer for £30 ($50) and with Clubcard vouchers (they're rewards for shopping in the store) it only came to £7 (about $11.50). Which is a bargain of a lifetime....
