So Amazon's price has gone down to $49.99 but imo its still not cheap enough, in comparison to the Amazon.co.uk price excluding VAT & getting free shipping it works out cheaper for me to import it from them + I'd get it a couple of weeks faster too (Amazon.com's shipping speed is soooo slow!)

However I'm holding out for maybe 25-30 pounds from UK Amazon during their Black Friday specials Fingers crossed!

I just purchased the trilogy for $50. I was going to wait in line at Best Buy to buy a TV, Lord of the Rings, and Season's 3 & 4 of Mad Men.

LOTR is already purchased. Mad Men will be on sale for 4 hours later this week. And I'm hoping to see some good TV deals.

Big Box stores just can't compete with Amazon.

That's the subtle hint when Gandalf was trying to tell them to use the goddamn eagles for the rest of the journey

I just placed my order. At least to hold on to it before it gets sold out. I can still cancel

How much cheaper can these get? Im not expecting $30 on BF.

$49.99 is the cheapest price so far. I bet that will be the lowest it gets to for a while. That is a 58% discount off the list price, so maybe it will be $39.99 one day, but I doubt it is this year.

Well when you consider that you can import the bluray Alien Anthology for under $30 from Amazon UK its not like it can't be done. Plus LOTR Extended is mostly compiled with cheap DVDs making it fairly cheap to produce

I wish this set had seamless Theatrical/Extended cut options, I don't mind the theatrical

I don't think the LOTR Trilogy is going to be much cheaper anytime soon. Especially not before the digital copies expire in June.

For catalog titles, I typically wait until the price gets down to $10 per movie. The LOTR Trilogy is one of those box sets that can be justified for a higher price tag.

$50 is still not low enough for me to bite. I have the theatricals and I'm fine with those (bought last BF for $7.99). The only extended version that I really like over the theatrical is the Two Towers.

I'm starting to consider just picking up the LOTR theatrical bluray set for under $20 since I only have the extended version on DVD (which I watch pretty rarely nowadays) - even if the upgrade is fairly minor over the DVD counterpart

Yeah but the US case for AA is better than the UK.

I thought more people would prefer the single, thick amaray case that you get with the UK AA set

Maybe thats why the US set still costs so much? They still use the fancy packaging. The only reasson ours is so cheap now is because they discontinued the gatefold packaging and replaced it with a cheap amaray case.

Meh, it still came with an outer cardboard slipcover for the UK re-release Plus I'm more concerned about the discs than the packaging to save half the price

I care about pakaging and disc art just as much as i do about PQ/AQ. So much so that i passed on Back To The Future deals as low as $15 because universals case is so damn horrible. I bought the UK version for $25 last week. That case is so much better.

I guess its an on and off thing between US and UK cases.

UK is more import friendly for me (not to mention shipping costs next to nothing!) but when it comes to Top Gear/Criterion releases I'm forced to order from the US (Top Gear gets a 3x price hike here) - thankfully I have region free players

Also I'll avoid digibooks (hate them!) and if a bluray comes in a crappy flimsy cardboard thing that's bound to fall apart (like those 007 blurays) then I'll look elsewhere

At what point is a movie too long? The originals were pretty long. The extended versions are much longer. I paid $24 total for the original movies. I'm not sure I see the reason to upgrade. I can't see sitting through so many hours of movies at once and if I do watch them once, they'll just sit on a shelf for months, perhaps years more without being watched. And as I always say, what's the point of owning a movie if you never watch it. At that point, it's just a waste of money.

I think that same argument could be made for most of the people with 200+ movie collections. If you take the number of hours of movies, television, and extras.... At what point does it just become obvious that the discs will sit on the shelf with no use?

I'd say anything over 100 movies starts to reach that point....

I'd rather have new stuff to watch than watching the same thing OVER and OVER ...

I think it's got to be a personal call. For me, when I watch a movie, I'm willing to sit as long as it takes for the story to be told properly. (Yeah, subjective word, "properly".) I prefer the Extended versions of LotR for a couple of reasons, even if Jackson says the preferred cuts are the ones we saw at the flicks. For starters, to me the EEs tell the story more satisfyingly - the story is more woven and characters are more rounded, becoming fuller and having their own purposes rather than often serving principally as plot devices. And the second is that it makes the films more of a saga, more Tolkienish perhaps, and diminishes the trend of the shorter cuts towards being more of an action film, something that was to my mind a bit of a failing of Jackson's version.

As for how many one can (should?) have - well, I think there's a point where having films in your possession can become the end in itself, and then buying them can become a sort of self-sustaining fire-storm. I was starting to head in that direction myself with DVDs, but fortunately I lost the impulse after a while. But if you're someone who'd rather watch a film you chose than just whatever happens to be on TV, then it's nice to have that choice be a wide one. Blu-rays seem to be fairly expensive in North America, but in Australia and the UK (the two I normally buy from), buying a Blu-ray is often cheaper than going to the cinema - and you can watch the film again at some point for no extra cost. That's a positive.

That's what Netflix is for. If you want to watch certain movies over again, that's what Blu-ray is for.
