Wow, thats a lot! We do them once a year around Christmas time since everyone has extra time off and the weather starts getting crappy. Plenty of time for some longer films and knocking off trilogies/quadrilogies.

How can you make those kind of comparisons using a 480p display?

I bought the EEs about less than a month ago for $54.99 when they were on sale and saw them on Friday for $39.99. So I had Best Buy match Futureshop.
Hello $16.95 back in my pocket

can you post some screen shots of those. But i think the word identical here will not give justice either. I mean I'm Im a nitpick myself but obviously the DVD version is very low res and with more jagged lines with lack of aliasing and bad coloring with the shaders. Blu-Ray Transfer is not only with the resolution but they remaster everything from colors to its textures. I post some screenshots of myself from my HTPC and man its really like miles away. Here are some screenshots captured at 1080p.

Its called everyday visual perception, using a very common device: your eyes. As for my resolution comment, I was referring to the fact that Blu-Rays hold a lot more data than standard DVDs. You don't have to have an HD display to know that.

I think once a year is very good. Keeps it fresh.

It's even longer for me. I've only watched the Lord of the Rings 2 times on DVD and only 1 time on blu ray. Before getting the blu ray the last time I watched the Lord of the Rings was in 2006. So it was like watching a new movie, when I viewed it this year.

But its a good investment, and when it's the holiday season and the weather is not so great. It's good time to pop this movie in.

Almost the same. I believe Faramir and Eowyn were added into the EE.

They do not even remotely look the same. The Blu-ray quality over the DVD is terrific. If they look the same to you, then you need to calibrate the display or you are not watching them on a high definition display.

That's a nice comparison shot, Slaveknight - I think it shows the difference, and the influence of the teal wash, very clearly. It matches what I see myself on my system.

I'll definitely give my thoughts with an update post in a few days or a week. (or like a day or so haha got my package today!)

That's heaps interesting doing a little cross over here haha You going one way me the other. I'm convinced it will take you a few watches to get into the pacing of TE's and me, likely will find it hard making it through ROTK especially at 4 hours instead of 3h 20m. It will be fun though an adjustment.

forgive me, but it could just be my SD laptop screen, but the bottom picture looks a bit darker, and the reflection of the trees in the water looks better on the dvd version, well, not better, more like you could possibly see a bit more that the trees are reflecting than in the Blu-Ray shot... The stones behind the cart and under the bridge look less detailed in the Blu-Ray shot as well...
Also the roof to the left is still blurry, but only slightly less so

Oh well I mean I cant have any more words to say man cause its the way how you see things around and I dont have to argue on that one. But one things for sure. The DVD version is totally washed out, low res and in a far view of those shots, you can even see the details of the people far away its just very pixelated. Maybe you have a magic screen in there which the DVD looks better than the Blu-Ray screenshot but for me its just totally washed out. I mean obviously.

I agree with you, K_B. I don't understand how people can look at these two screenshots as examples of how much better the Blu-ray image looks.

What I see is a shift in the palette that narrows the colour space and negates the increased detail resolution by reducing the colour contrast. Reds and browns in the image - the roofs of the houses, the stones of the bridge, the reflection of the bridge in the water, the brown of the horse, the unsown field in the distance at top right of the image - are all shifted towards a warm grey by the overall green wash. The clouds are more distinct, but largely because the sky now looks unnaturally darker and the clouds appear to have been used to set the white highlight points in the image, so they're exaggerated and now look painted in. If you look at the people in the open near the river, I think they actually look less distinct than in the DVD image because of the reduced colour contrast.

Comments on this thread have seemed to indicate that people were expecting everything to look actually green, and without that they claim the issue is nonexistent. But you can see it in the shift of most colours throughout this transfer.

I received a complete replacement of LOTR:EE and tried out the first TTT disc where I previously reported the sound cutting out. The replacement does the same thing so I guess my player has some sort of issue. The sound stops and will not return unless the player is powered off and back on again. Even other movies will not have their sound until I turn the player off and on.

I have the latest firmware installed and every other disc I play (including all the other LOTR discs) work just fine. I have no idea what more I could do to rectify the problem short of buying another player. I think I will let it go for now and hopefully when I do need a new player this problem will go away.

I wasn't sure what to expect about the color change, because so many people (including myself) had been debating the whole thing for months. When I finally watched the movie, I noticed very minor changes, and most of them didn't bother me. Overall, the most prevalent ones were a slight shade change in the Hobbits' cloaks, Frodo's eyes in a few moments, and the establishing shot of Caradhras.

Fair enough. I see many more instances than that. They don't bother me in a substantial sense, but I do find the image distracting and irritating all the way through, because it's muddy and kinda ugly and just should have been much better.

Ah well. It is what it is. But I fully expect (and hope!) that, when we get a repackaged release of these films following the second Hobbit flick, we'll see a different transfer of Fellowship.

The color change didn't bother me as much, until I watched TTT right after FotR. And BAM the teal wash is gone, and TTT color to me looks 100% better. And its not as dark. I personally would have preferred the original color timing.

I might bite once this gets under $30. It may not happen with all the extra DVDs, but if it doesn't sell well maybe I'll get my chance. I just wish they'd market the BD's separately. I don't want to repurchase all of the extras DVDs all over again.
