Yes, I've read many times other people saying (third-hand) that Jackson had said it. But that doesn't mean that it's accurate to what he actually said. This is the Internet, after all.

Thanks mate. It's not a matter of my not being satisfied. I wasn't actually claiming he hadn't said it, even though I was interested to know if there was substance to the claim. (So thanks for the quote. I hadn't gone searching for it myself because I really don't care either way, for my personal enjoyment of the films; and as far as the distributors are concerned, you can tell from the attention and effort they've put into the two packages which cuts they are putting their weight behind.)

I was really making an indirect point about what one assumes is a fact to base an argument on, especially if one is going to go so far as to call someone else delusional for their perspective on the matter.

I was scrutinizing pretty hard while watching because of the insane amount of debate taking place on the issue. The only thing I noticed was a fractionally "shady" quality to a very few very short scenes that total less than 5 minutes of runtime.

My TV is pretty solidly calibrated as well. I have a lot of my roommates friends ask me to come and calibrate their sets after seeing mine in action.

You shouldn't have to adjust settings on a properly calibrated set for one film out of a trilogy and then adjust it back for the other discs. It's not a problem with his set, it's a problem with the disc. This has been debunked ad nauseam since summer, let's not be obstinate about this all over again.

I plan to go through all three of these on New Year's Eve day and the only tint I intend to pay attention to will be the tint in my glass!

Well, I'll add my 2 cents, even though it's nothing new.

I finally got around to watching FOTR on my 50" plasma that is not professionally calibrated and.. I didn't notice a thing. I'm sure the green tint is there but it was neither distracting or noticeable to my eyes. In fact, I though the picture looked outstanding.

In my opinion this is a lot to do about nothing.

LOL, +1. How can we be expected to discuss the picture quality of blu-ray with someone who does not use a high definition display?

IMO, only the EE of the Fellowship is a must watch. I'm telling ya, the other two, especially Towers are very good theatrically. Some scenes added are good and some are pointless and kill the pacing. Less is more and in this case it applies sometimes!

No one can ever convince me that Two Towers EE is somehow vastly superior to the TE. I much prefer the TE this time over the EE. FOTR is a tie where both versions are paced well. An overall flawless film that can be watched no matter the version. ROTK is the one EE that is superior to the TE. Even for just the simple fact of learning Saramons fate.

While most people seem to prefer the theatrical cut, just can't watch them anymore. I prefer the extended cut and it's the only version of the movie I care to watch now.

Ditto.

My wife has only seen the extended versions, and they are among her favorite movies. She doesn't care to ever see the theatrical versions.

I've never preferred the theatrical cuts, and I don't think most fans do either. It's my opinion that those who prefer the TC's, simply don't have the patience to sit through the longer EE's. They're usually the types who feel they have to watch an entire movie in one sitting, instead of breaking it up into sections (like one half of each movie a night), so they end up exhausted . Whenever I've watched the EE's, it has always taken me over the course of about a week (or two) to finish them, but as someone who has also read the books, it's so much more enjoyable than watching the TC's...

Part 1 & 3 yes. But having recently watched the Two Towers, the first time since seeing it in theaters, I prefer the TE just for that film.

I think The Two Towers benefits the most from the EE treatment. ROTK is far better in its TE, IMO, and I could go either way on Fellowship. Interesting how opinions always seem to differ between people

My only complaints are the Ents extended scenes and Grima spitting on Aragorns hand. ROTK had good and bad scenes but the good outweigh the bad. We needed those extra battle scenes to make the ending more epic. We didn't need a skull waterfall.

The two versions are a perfect balance:

Theatrical - For newcomers who may not wind up getting into the lore of LOTR.

Extended - For people who like character development, hardcore fans and those that wish to become such.

Am I odd in that I watched the EE's in one sitting?
I would be completely "out" of the movie if I were to watch any film in multiple sittings (yes I do have plenty of time ).

Well if you're odd, Aquel, then I am too, in the same way. I love going on a journey with a film, so I won't watch one (LotR or otherwise) if I have to watch it in bits.

I am not out to CONVINCE anyone which is better... it is all opinion and conjecture. What matters to me is that I PREFER the Extended cuts. They are the versions I choose to watch too.

I'm with you. If I have to stop a movie half way, I'll always start at the beginning again the next time around.

I'm not a hardcore fan; in fact, I've never read the books (aside from a brief skim through "Two Towers" as a teen). Until the films came out, I knew very little about the story, and what I've learned mostly comes from Wikipedia and the Appendices.

No, there is not much in the way of character development in the EE over the TE. As Jackson himself said, the TE are the legit versions. The EE are just for collectors/completists who want to see the scenes that Jackson deemed unnecessary. And neither version does real justice to the lore of LOTR, unless I missed Tom Bombadil and the alternate Gollum battle in Mount Doom.

Bottom line: I saw both versions. They're ok but I prefer the TE for repeat viewing. And they don't do justice to the books, but that's a given.
