The problem child of both sets is Fellowship, and I reckon it's the reason the Theatrical set has whatever bad rep it's acquired. Neither transfer of that film is completely satisfactory; in the Theatrical set it has better colour balance than the Extended, but it's as if the luminance has been taken down a few notches in every colour across the palette, giving that dull gun-metal edge to the blacks and diminishing shadow detail; the Extended has better detail and the greater richness of colour that comes with more attention in the transfer and greater bandwidth in the display, but I personally dislike what they've done to try to fix the image problems in the source material: the across-the-board shift in the colour palette is problematic, and a lot of the light has gone out of the image, making it look like every single scene was shot on an overcast day. But the other two films are fine, in both sets. I'd say the Extendeds are the better transfers, again because they were given more attention in the encoding and more headspace in the bandwidth, but without a direct comparison anyone should be happy with the transfers of the second and third film in the Theatrical set. If you really don't care about the differences in content -- either the extras or the extended scenes in the films themselves -- there's no reason you shouldn't buy the Theatrical set. I'm undecided myself, but tend towards the thought that they're better balanced films, dramatically speaking. PQ-wise, though, my vote would be with the Extendeds, on the balance of two out of the three films. |

I can't comment on Two Towers or Return of the King, but the theatrical version of Fellowship has some DNR problems. There are scenes where everything looks very waxy. I only viewed it once, so I don't remember how much of the movie suffers from it. And yes, the extended version bonus features are all on DVDs, but the discs (except the third disc for each movie) contain hours of stuff to watch, so you probably wouldn't watch them all in one sitting anyway. So if you don't mind the added footage, I would go with the extended versions.

Any one has their disc one of Fellowship EE skipping at two scenes?
First one when one of the wraiths stabs Frodo and the Second scene is when Gandalf is on top of the Isengard tower and the moth comes to him and he talks to it. |

French on the cover artwork inserts might be a different story though. Canada requires the French to be included for ease of marketing to EVERY province. I could be wrong though. ![]() |

Yep, that's the French for you even though 80+% of the Canadian population doesn't even know French.
