You won't find any better editions than either Easton Press' or The Folio Society's (although the latter might not be leather.)

I have the full Easton Press set (LotR trilogy, Hobbit, Silmarillion, etc.) I even have the Visual Companions they released for the films... although I think those have been out of print for years and I doubt they'll ever have another run. All fantastic quality but they are far from cheap.

Thank you all, you've been really helpful! I'm thinking of getting the faux-leather bound LotR from Amazon that was linked earlier, as well as a green faux-leather Hobbit from B&N that looks like it matches. Hopefully in the next year or two I will pick up a true leather-bound set.

Now, back to the thread's topic, as I have taken it off-topic for long enough, are there any particular scenes specific to the extended edition that you are looking forward to in terms of audio or video presentation? Most of the extended scenes I can think of off the top of my head seem to be dialogue driven? Surely there must be something I have forgotten, it's been a few years since I watched them.

I've not seen any of those editions... but I'll probably buy another copy of the books eventually I want them to go with all of my DVD's and BD's of the movies that decorate my home theater room once I get one set up. By the way, a little off topic, doesn't matter how crappy my day is, your avatar always makes me laugh, I love it

[Show spoiler] Aragorn chopping off the head of the mouth of Sauron, that part is AWESOME! Not too much action but awesome anyway.

Edit: and basically EVERYTHING that goes on in Mordor that was cut out of the Theatrical cut... I bet those scenes are going to look amazing...

Isn't it true that the Easton Press and Folio editions do NOT have the maps?

Agreed. He's a really nice man, too. Met him probably seven or eight years ago here in Austin at a signing. Got him to sign his LOTR book at the time, and he talked and showed some drawings as well.

The green Hobbit you are looking at, is a match for this Red LOTR:

http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Col...2804818&sr=1-1

It was one of the first deluxe one volume editions I came across. However, there is one thing about that I personally think is a flaw. The page numbers start over at the beginning of the Two Towers and then start over again at the beginning of Return of the King, which means the publisher took pages from individual volumes and bound them into one volume. I think the 50th Anniversary pictured here is much better:

check out this video just posted on PJ's facebook page..

If that doesn't wake up sleeping Hobbit fans and help sell more of the blu-ray EE I don't know what will.

Hmmm... I'm almost certain they do.

It has been a while since I read those particular editions (had them for years) but I remember them not only having maps but the maps themselves being "detached" unlike other versions and could be unfolded to a much larger size, almost like separate posters, and were of a much higher quality than the cheap attached fold-out maps you'd see in typical trade editions. I could be confusing them for some other editions (I have the other editions other people linked too) but I don't think so.

When I get home from work tonight I could check if you want and take a few pictures or something. Wouldn't bother me at all.

Folio I wouldn't know about, I don't own it.

Like all other one-volume editions from Harper-Collins, the stories are not in published-date order.

I read the first 20 pages in this HUMONGOUS thread before I finally gave up

So please bare with me..

Since THIS is the LONGEST thread EVER, my questions have probably already been answered.. I just didn't find the answer..

Will the EEs be split or not?

If yes please read the following quote:

What is this? - Is there something as wonderful as a BD100 disk?
Can it be used in a standard BD player if the players firmware is updated?

I was hoping for highest PQ and AQ, but on a single disk. (BD100???)

The last time I had to change discs was back in the "good old" Laser Disk days. And I HATED it.. I didn't have to change VHS cassette to watch Terminator 2 - But I had to flip my Laser Disk..

The following is for those who want a break...

"Each movie will be split across two discs. Audio will be 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The Fellowship of the Ring has been remastered from the original 2k digital files."

I've got the 50th anniversary edition as well. Although it's not real leather, you'll be very happy w/ it. Interestingly enough, when people come over to my place to watch the game, etc., it's the book people most often pull off the shelf and start to thumb through.

The first time I read it, it was truly painful at times, but I really appreciated it when I finished. Subsequent readings have been much more enjoyable since I now have a basic understanding of the major characters, locations and plots. It still amazes me that one man was able to conceive such an intricate and fascinating world like Tolkien did.
Ok, got the atlas on my Amazon wish list. Now the question for you guys is: which edition if the Silmarillion do I order?

I actually have two copies. The hardcover edition illustrated by Ted Nasmith is my "read while at home" copy, and the one I would recommend you get. I also have this paperback that I read if I'm travelling.

The Ted Nasmith illustrated edition. In addition to the great paintings it also has a letter written by Tolkien that synopsizes and explains the motives for the chapters.

I just checked 'em and the maps are definitely there, and separate from the spine and binding like I said before. Other maps that are connected to the spine almost always tear when they're unfolded (like pretty much every other edition has,) and the paper is higher quality than others.

I snapped a quick pic of just Fellowship next to the Houghton Mifflin 50th Anniversary Edition for scale and a quick pic of Easton Press' FotR map.

[Show spoiler]

[Show spoiler]

The Easton Press set just "feels" way higher in quality than anything else you can buy. You get what you pay for I guess.
