Well yes, but you understand that you're not seeing the straight original negative in much of the film, right? Gollum ain't on the negative

![]() The Fellowship of the Ring contained an attack by Orcs from Moria on Lothlórien after the Fellowship leaves Moria, replaced with a more suspenseful entrance for the Fellowship. Also cut were scenes from the book, including Frodo seeing more of Middle-earth at Parth Galen and an extended Council of Elrond,[10] and new scenes with an attack upon Frodo and Sam at the river Anduin by an Uruk-hai.[10] The major cut to The Two Towers featured Arwen and Elrond visiting Galadriel at Lothlórien, with Arwen then leading the Elven reinforcements to Helm's Deep.[13] This scene, and a flashback to Arwen and Aragorn's first meeting, was cut during a revision of the film's plot; the Elves' appearance was explained with a telepathic communication between Elrond and Galadriel.[13] Éowyn was to have a greater role in defending the refugees in the Glittering Caves from Uruk-hai intruders,[29] while in Osgiliath, Faramir was to have a vision of Frodo becoming like Gollum,[13] with Frodo and Sam having an extended fight sequence.[30] Filmed for The Return of the King were two scenes present in the book; Sam using the Phial of Galadriel to pass the Watchers at Cirith Ungol, and further epilogue footage, with endings for Legolas and Gimli, Éowyn and Faramir's wedding and Aragorn's death and funeral many filmed scenes remain unused including Battle of the Black Gate in ROTK ! It is sourced. Some of those appear in the appendices bonus features and during commentary.

I finally saw the EE's for the first time. I must be one of the only people that actually prefer the TE's over the EE's. I felt like most of the extended scenes were a bit corny, didn't seem to fit well ruining the flow and slowing down the the story. I totally understood why they were cut out initially.
The BDs look great. About as good as I expected, but in a way kind of wish I bought the TE's. I skipped them when they came out since I wanted to see the EE's anyway, and now it turns out I like the original versions more. Kinda burned myself there. Could have saved a bit of money just going with the TE's. |

Difference is, Titanic did not have a digital cinema master. They HAD to re-scan it. Titanic's (much fewer) digital effects scenes were not touched up and stuck out pretty badly on the IMAX screen. I'm not sure if this is an accurate figure but I remember reading that something like 75% of the Lord of the Rings films' runtime has some kind of digital element on screen.

I would love to see the scene with Aragorn and Arwen's first meeting, and I'm vaguely hoping it ends up in The Hobbit, though I sort of doubt it will. |

We're mixing up apples and oranges here, though. The items you listed from Wikipedia were allegedly filmed footage that didn't make it into the final cut(s), whereas the quoted article on OneRing.net was talking about making-of footage that would be added to the supplementary material ("The tone of these materials is not so much about filmmaking process – as we already covered that – but instead about the experience of living and making these films"). It doesn't mention footage that would be added back into the actual films.

I believe TTT and RotK theatrical Blu-rays are worth picking up, especially the latter. I recall no imperfections. The TTT is uneven in that the first 45 minutes are so are gorgeous and then the DNR comes in as soon as you get to Rohan. FotR is like this too, but so much worse.

The one film of the three I REALLY feel is massively superior in the extended cut is Two Towers, though. That cut actually fills in a lot of holes in the story-- a couple of examples are the horse that rescues Aragorn, and the explanation for Faromir's motivations and actions towards Frodo and Sam. |
