The one film of the three I REALLY feel is massively superior in the extended cut is Two Towers, though. That cut actually fills in a lot of holes in the story-- a couple of examples are the horse that rescues Aragorn, and the explanation for Faromir's motivations and actions towards Frodo and Sam.
Yeah some of that stuff was definitely useful, but there's a lot of scenes like when it shows Merry getting taller. That was so useless and really felt shoehorned in there. Scenes like that just feel like cutting room floor scenes. There was a bunch of that in the extended versions, but I agree some of it makes it worth it.

Oh yeah I should have explained what I meant better. There is a scene before that (extended cut only) where the horse if having a panic attack, and Aragorn calms it down and tells them to let it go because it has seen too much war. That freed horse then later rescues him. I think it works a lot better than "and then a random horse shows up and takes him to Helms Deep."

yes that's the one and a few others TTT is the best example to see the EE so much is improved over the TE

ManWithNoUsername: How do you feel about the inclusion of Beren and Luthien's story and how it ties into Aragorn's own with Arwen?

Yeah, I agree. There are definitely some scenes that I don't think were necessary like that one. But for me there's always something crucial in the EE that I think is sorely missing in the theatrical cuts. In RotK it's seeing the final fate of Saruman towards the beginning.

The other thing I like about the Extended Cuts is viewing the films more like a six-part miniseries than three really lengthy films. That helps a lot with the pacing as well-- thinking of each disc as one complete part of the story before taking a breather and then moving on to the next part. Peter Jackson refers to the theatricals as "his director's cuts," and I think that is because he specifically cut the theatrical films to be watched in a single sitting, in both the theater and at home. The Extended Cuts are not designed for that, pacing wise.

It explains how they got so far as they did without detection. The TE only has them in the orc garb noting how many orcs they have to get through. There's a cut to Gandalf and the others talking, and then a cut to Sam and Frodo wandering around with none of Sauron's forces present. It's a great addition, I think.

Also cut were scenes from the book, including Frodo seeing more of Middle-earth at Parth Galen and an extended Council of Elrond,[10] and new scenes with an attack upon Frodo and Sam at the river Anduin by an Uruk-hai.[10] The major cut to The Two Towers featured Arwen and Elrond visiting Galadriel at Lothlórien, with Arwen then leading the Elven reinforcements to Helm's Deep.[13] This scene, and a flashback to Arwen and Aragorn's first meeting, was cut during a revision of the film's plot; the Elves' appearance was explained with a telepathic communication between Elrond and Galadriel.[13] Éowyn was to have a greater role in defending the refugees in the Glittering Caves from Uruk-hai intruders,[29] while in Osgiliath, Faramir was to have a vision of Frodo becoming like Gollum,[13] with Frodo and Sam having an extended fight sequence.[30] Filmed for The Return of the King were two scenes present in the book; Sam using the Phial of Galadriel to pass the Watchers at Cirith Ungol, and further epilogue footage, with endings for Legolas and Gimli, Éowyn and Faramir's wedding and Aragorn's death and funeral

many filmed scenes remain unused including Battle of the Black Gate in ROTK !

I believe the reason that most of those scenes were not included even into the extended version was because they deviated excessively from the original story. As self-admitted "Tolkien fans", it would have been a huge mistake for Jackson and Boyen to include these scenes - regardless of how well filmed they were - into the movie.
