They didn't remaster the films for the upcoming individual BD releases. They remastered the films for the original BD trilogy boxset release. These individual releases will be the EXACT IDENTICAL SAME VIDEO & AUDIO as what is currently in the boxset.

Maybe they ran out of boxes to put them in that's why.

If they end up having the exact same black cases as the trilogy set, I'd be inclined to think that your hypothesis has some merit to it.
![]() Suit 1 - "Ummm... what do we do with all of these? We have no trilogy covers left to put them in to make a complete package." Suit 2 - "Let's just sell them like this. People have been asking for them individually anyways. Let's give them what they want." Suit 1 - "Ok. So, $60 divided by 3..." Suit 2 - "No no no. If they don't want the set but want these films, they have to pay more for them. $35 MSRP would make it about $25 to $30 per film. That way we can make that extra $15 to $$30 off of those who don't do the smart thing and just buy the boxset for cheaper." Suit 1 - "You sir... are an evil genius! I'll have my secretary draw up some official looking documents immediately to portray this decision as a customer service based one." Suit 2 - "Good. That means we have the next 4 hours before lunch to get a round of golf in." Suit 1 - "Ah, yes. I'll have my secretary get my clubs as well." ![]() |

What they really did was bring up FOTR to the quality level that TTT and ROTK already had for the most part. The post-production on those two films was 100% digital, so they can be directly converted to HD (though they added some stupid DNR in the process). The reason Fellowship is different is because only about 80% of it was done digitally. That stuff was then recorded to 35mm negative and cut together with the other 20%. So the theatrical cut of FOTR exists as reels of film, rather than digital data that can be directly converted to HD. Perfectly fine for making theatrical prints, not so great for home video.
The theatrical blu-ray was a transfer made from the film, which is like making a copy of a copy of a copy; obviously quality suffers. So they went back to the original digital data for 80% of the movie, and scanned the rest in as well. |

You can bet the ranch that Suits take way more than four hours to play a round of golf. And they never let anyone play-through....

The extended edition blu-ray set is currently on sale at Best Buy for $49.99 and that offer almost seems to good to pass up but I have read the reviews for the extended edition box set and it really bothers me that FOTR has a greenish tint to it, even thought the picture quality is good. I could buy the theatrical release of FOTR but I have read that the PQ on that release is not very good.
Do you think there will be another release of FOTR extended edition without the greenish tint? Basically should I buy the $50 EE set at best buy because of the price or wait for a possible future blu-ray re-release of FOTR EE without the greenish tint? Lastly, do you think that the LOTR trilogy theatrical and extended editions will be released on blu-ray in one box set? I don't believe that ever happened on DVD. |

Warner will probably not release both cuts in one box set for at least 2-3 years since they are notorious for releasing as many SKUs as possible when it comes to their prized titles. Here's the different SKUs I expect over the next couple years: Re-release of the TE trilogy Re-release of the EE trilogy Individual release of The Hobbit Part I TE Trilogy plus The Hobbit Part I TE EE Trilogy plus The Hobbit Part I EE The Hobbit Part I EE Individual release of The Hobbit Part II TE Trilogy plus The Hobbit Part I and Part II TE EE Trilogy plus The Hobbit Part I and Part II EE Finally, one massive box set that contains all cuts in their various forms, but this one will probably be after the previous releases have made their money. On the other hand, the "green tint" is every bit as bad as the still shots suggest, but your eyes do learn to put up with it after a while, and the EE set on BD is still the best version of the films currently available on home media.
There was a release on DVD that had both the cinema versions and the EEs on the one set of discs — that's the set that first included the Costa Boates documentary that makes up the fifth disc for each film in the current EE Blu-ray set — but it came out pretty late in the product's lifecycle. If it happens on BD, it likely won't be for a while. If you want the set, the price is pretty good at the moment. Yeah, it might eventually get cheaper, but likely not by much, and it could also get quite a bit more expensive before you know it. |

um, there's still only 3 movies so it's actually $16.67 per movie, the number of discs it comes on is irrelevant to that.
