As well as the individual releases for each movie in 2D and 3D, with or without commemorative figurines.

On the green tint thing, does the Fellowship footage in The Return of the King (Boromir getting hit by arrows) match the footage in The Fellowship of the Ring EE?

Extended editions? Aren't three movies long enough already for The Hobbit? .

Left is FotR EE, right is Rotk EE.

I so prefer the FotR color timing there.

Hey guys, searched this forum but no answer on this one.

I bought the canadian EE editions (Alliance release) and I must say I'm disappointed with the image quality. The image looks tinkered with, digital instead of filmic, and seems quite compressed.

Watching on a calibrated 60" Kuro.
=>*Is the Alliance release the exact same encode as the US release?
Has it been confirmed?

Those comparison shots of FOTR and the ROTK flashback shots are like the smoking gun.

I won't buy the EE BD set unless the awful green tint is removed.

You'll be waiting forever because it's likely not going to happen.

I don't expect it to. That's ok, my EE DVDs are good enough.

Still shots like that make it seem 100x worse than it really is.

A lot of people felt the same way as you. Then, they decided to see it for themselves. They changed their minds about the quality VERY quickly.

When comparing the two, I still say, my biggest concern is not the color in FOTR, it's the crushed blacks. Look at all of the detail that is missing in the FOTR screenshot in the dark areas of Borimir's suit and his hair. Truly a shame.

Most movies have different tints. If they would if released the green tint earlier it would of not bothered you. Look at the Matrix Trilogy..All green.

That is exactly why BD is still sitting at about 20-25% market share and has been for the last year. Sadly, most of the public feels this way.

...I never said there isn't tinting in other movies. This is a big trend that took off in the early 2000s. Sometimes its done well, other times it's not. And in the case of The Matrix (only seen the first two), the tinting is awful in the second movie. Just because there is only one version of a film doesn't mean people won't still notice excessive tinting. In fact I notice the excessive oranges, blues, greens, teals, etc. whenever I watch something. On television Breaking Bad applies so much yellow to outdoor scenes (especially in Mexico) that it's almost laughably bad.

But in the case of LOTR, I feel the original color timing feels more natural overall. Sure, there are some pinkish/reddish scenes (Rivendell), but the EE BD looks worse in most cases, e.g. teal snow, green breakfast scene, etc. Plus it looks much darker overall.

From what I've seen of the FOTR EE BD, it's like some guy went into the color settings, dragged the slider towards "green", clicked "apply to every frame", and that was it. If they wanted to change the color timing, more attention and detail should have been given to adjust certain scenes to varying degrees and leave other alone.

B
Do you have a problem with the similar stylistic choice Soderbergh made over a decade ago for Traffic? If it's intentional, I don't care.

That is patently false, as can be demonstrated here.

The top is the TE BD. Click on the thumbnail and then the image for a high resolution lossless comparison.
