Ouch. Should have waited till it went on sale, which it occasionally does.

I really want to get these extended versions but I am worried that after I buy them, they'll get re-released in 3D.

They were not even filmed in 3D so that shouldn't even be a concern.

Right, which is why I would never consider buying any of them. Anyone with a half a brain would do the same especially with the primitive home 3D systems that are readily available.

I'm right there with you, however the option for a 3D conversion is still on the table.

Hasn't PJ talked about considering a 3D re-release? Or is that another one of those Internet smoke-and-mirror claims about what he did or didn't say?

I distinctly remember PJ discussing experimenting with 3D footage...

Really considering buying these. I've only seen bits & pieces of these on TNT, never seen them in full.

Everything I just said was a fact. It is beyond pointless to watch a film that was natively filmed in 2D in 3D. It's just like listening to native 5.1 mixes in 7.1, which is also pointless.

Apparently you have never seen Titanic, BATB or Lion King in 3D. Or you're just trolling for the fun of it. Your comparison is irrelevant to the discussion.

And this is just personal with me, but with 7.1, the separation in the back and the sides kind of diffuses the back, so I kind of like having just a discrete feel in the back with 6.1."
The trilogy was released on DVD in DTS 6.1 discrete, it was actually a cutting-edge release at the time, and I had purchased a THX amp with the ability to decode it and it was glorious. Now we're on to 7.1 discrete, the Blu Ray contains the original mix which most people didn't have the ability to hear on original release.

20 minutes of LOTR was presented to theater owners in 3-D back when the studios were trying to convince theaters to upgrade to digital projectors. I'm sure a 3-D conversion will happen someday, but I'm happy to have the original version (not crazy about the color timing in Fellowship, but whatever).

Mmm, I was pretty sure that something had been said about it more recently, suggesting a possible rerelease of the complete films at the cinema but in 3D — though with PJ being in the thick of filming and post-producing two, and now three, Hobbit films, I can't imagine it happening before this December.

I'm not much of a fan of 3D myself — just personal druthers — so if LotR was to hit the cinemas again, I'd rather just see the EEs in 2D — I've never seen those cuts on the big screen.

Wrath of the Titans looked convincing enough. Conversions are getting better and better.

What follows the word 'fact' in that statement is all opinion.
