Here's an idea... why don't you take responsibility for your own desires and put the legwork in by doing your own research? I already bought mine for $62 within the first month of it being available. I did my due diligence to the extent that I was content with my purchase. If you want to spend more money in the long run for these, by all means go ahead. At no point did I criticize anyone for opting to choose the route of the individual releases. I just wanted to get the knowledge out there that they can be had for less money. I really don't care what you do regarding your purchase. I was only trying to help inspire more economical shopping. ![]() |

3. Set aside $20 each month for a few months to save some money on the purchase in the long run by buying the boxset. ![]() |

![]() I sold my box set, even though I just bought it recently. It was a lot of money to spend at once, and I didn't care for the packaging. I broke even, apart from some of the shipping costs (thinking of it as a rental, as I really wanted to see how they looked in HD - spectacular!). The LOTR box looked nice on the shelf, but it had that awkward flap that made getting individual films out a pain. And the faces artwork on the cases was pretty bland, especially compared to the DVD sets. The new covers looks great. My Fellowship DVD is consistently freezing at ~41 minutes, so that one needs replacement. The others I'll get eventually, when I feel like wasting some money of own. ![]() Last edited by thegoat; 08-28-2012 at 02:19 AM. |

If you don't want them bad enough to put a few dollars aside in order to save a few dollars, maybe you shouldn't be indulging in the Blu-ray hobby in the first place. You are making it sound more and more like your budget doesn't allow for it anyways if you literally have no disposable income at any given time. Whatever you decide to do, I hope you are content with your purchase (or lack thereof). You have proven yourself to be one of two people I've encountered over my 5 years as a member here that has deserved to be put on my ignore list. Farewell forever. ![]() Last edited by Petra_Kalbrain; 08-28-2012 at 03:33 AM. |

Very happy with the trilogy even though I only bought the first two in the theatrical cut
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Also the bickering about the 2 discs for one movies may be over but let me just say that in my 10+ years of encoding movies a 50GB Blu-ray disc is a GOD SENT!!!! You people have no idea how much space that is and how efficient the H.264 codec can be if you know what you are doing when encoding. Their are some AMAZING looking Blu-ray discs out there with a bit rate as low at 14.5mbps as the average and I won't even mention them, go take a look on Blu-rayStats.com ![]() Additionally with lossless audio codecs you can provide a ton more room for the video, Dolby TrueHD IMO is a better codec than DTS-MA when it comes to keep the size down, if there is a super quiet scene the TrueHD track can stay as low as the core which could be as low as 192kbps versus DTS-MA only being able to stay as low as its much larger core....I only mention this because Akira had a crazy monstrous sized 25gig or something crazy like that 192khz TrueHD track and the video still looked GREAT! (I know its animation but the point is still valid). Overall if the studio realized that the movie needed more room to breath they could have done what Akira did and used a TrueHD track with a minuscule sized 192khz core to save space...(In fact I've even encoded a video with a TrueHD track where the core was 128kbps!) |

Five discs per set is a bit daft. It's about time they used all the making of stuff to make one definitive three hour documentury. But just wait a bit, it will be $15 a set before too long.

Have you watched the extras, CinemaScope? The fifth disc for each film is the (fairly exhaustive) Laurent Bouzerau documentary that was originally released with the branched DVD sets of LotR that included both versions of each film — incidentally, the same set where the artwork on the new individual releases also debuted.
It's a bit annoying that they've stuck with the DVDs for the extras on the Blu-ray releases — especially since the BDs are region-free but the DVDs aren't. But so be it, I guess. I wonder which of these extras will make it into the inevitable Complete Middle Earth set once the Hobbit films are complete — and how many discs that set will have?! ![]() |
