3 long ass movies on 6 Blu-ray discs. As for the DVD's, it doesn't bother me. Since the material would be in SD anyway.

I'd be more annoyed if they weren't included at all. And at least the set also includes the extra documentary discs from the DVD re-release.

Well worth finally upgrading from the DVD Extended Edition boxset. Since I didn't rebuy the films on DVD for the new documentary a few years ago.

Don't forget they're new cuts, different from the EE DVD with new footage.
One of the big reasons I bought the set.

Ummm... say what?!?! May I have some of what you are smoking please?

They aren't new cuts at all. They are identical to the DVD EEs save for the color grading enhancements made to FOTR.

At $40, I think I'm going to go for it! Awesome price.

I'd like a cheaper bare-bones set but I doubt the DVDs add much to the price anyway. I don't like FOTR's new look, but you still get the PQ and mind-blowing AQ. Not to mention, it could take years for a new set to come out (and who knows if FOTR will even be addressed).

Do you think this will ever see $20 like the alien set?

Does anyone know if the special features if I buy the individual 5 disc releases are the same as the 15 disc release?

Everything is the same.

Edit. I think the individual releases have digital copies and the 2012 box does not.

For those that are fans of the series, how much would you recommend it to someone who, for the most part, has had very little interest in ever even seeing the films until now?

What I'm getting at is, these films never interested in me in theaters. I saw the first one in 7th grade on DVD and fell asleep. Certainly, a lot has changed since then, and I've grown to love and appreciate the art of film in general, which has opened my eyes to movies I never would have ever dreamed of watching otherwise.

With that in mind, is it worth owning this set? $40 seems like a great price for titles that are held in such high regard, and I know people really love the look and construction of this boxed set.

Yeah, I saw it at $40 and decided to wait a few hours before buying. Felt really disappointed when it went back to $56. But it's back at $40 for the time being.

BLeClair12, I recommend LOTR for everyone because they're my favorite films aside from Star Wars. Don't know how this put you to sleep before... they're very exciting movies. I watch them multiple times a year and they never get old. I can't wait to watch the blu-rays for the first time.

...
I know you asked fans, which I am not particularly, but I can say I picked it up at Best Buy recently when it hit this price point because I consider it a good deal for the caliber of these works. I never made it completely through the books, I saw the first one in theaters, and watched the rest on dvd. I decided to upgrade because when I do watch them the blu rays are much more impressive & immersive. I guess you could say I appreciate the films.

I am also not the only member of my household; my son is now getting into the stories (mostly because they just came out with a lego LOR video game), and it'll be a good set to have for him to watch when he wants.

I was in 7th grade at the time, and truthfully, had no interest in seeing it at all. I don't remember any other circumstances, but that always stuck with me and so I never gave any thought to revisiting them until recently when I realized it's one of the few recent trilogies that, despite enormous critical acclaim, I'd never bothered to see.

Leaning toward picking it up. Am I correct to assume that this set includes the extended editions only and not the theatrical cuts?

Yeah, I agree. At the very least 39.99 should be its regular "sale price." Which equals roughly 13.50 per movie. $40 is a decent deal since each movie is a double disc...but not an "OMG AMAZING" deal.

$20-24 should be the new "super deal" price that pops up now and then. Star Wars, 6 films, is on sale for 69.99, which is 11.66 a film. So... there you have it.

As you said...it's a freaking truckload of DVDs. I'm sure this has been addressed to death (I haven't read all 5,000 posts!) but, why on Earth did they create all these DVDs? Couldn't they have fit all the Standard Def Extras on 1 BD?

Enhancements.

Man, what a **** up. How it has never been acknowledged and remedied when Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, and Sunshine all were, and this is arguably the most egregious error of them all, just boggles my mind. I paid $70 dollars for this set, damn it.

I personally think there are two different things going on in FotR.

1) Deliberate scene specific color grading changes.

2) Non-deliberate overall green tint and black crush contrast problems.
