I did find that one earlier but was not confident about it. One things for sure though, that THX Optimizer ain't worth beans as I had my brightness set at +29 using it's 'drop shadow' test. ![]() Yep. I have been thinking about getting a new one. Should I go for a plasma again or a LCD instead? .

There's no reason, or evidence, to imagine that what they've ended up with as a response to the misgrading of the original release is even close to what they might have wished for the film if the misgrading hadn't happened. The significant differences between the FotR transfer and the transfer of the other two films is evidence of that. The phrase "making the best of a bad lot" comes to mind. The improvements over the transfer of the cinema versions were clearly intentional (and thank goodness!), but there is nothing at all to indicate that the way the EE of FotR looks overall is due to "artistic intent". Quote:
You've posted about people claiming the DVD transfer as reference, but I honestly think that's a furphy, because I've never seen anyone actually say it other than the people who are rubbishing the idea. So it seems a straw man to me. And yes, I am challenging hyperbolic nonsense and bogus reasoning, which is why I posted what I did. Even with professional calibration, FotR doesn't look like the other two transfers, so that puts paid to the "it's only your display settings" allegation. But what bogus reasoning is there coming from the "don't like the teal" camp? Can you point to any? Last edited by MacEachaidh; 12-21-2012 at 03:56 AM. |

When I finally made the switch to Blu-ray last October, I got rid of my Extended Edition DVDs to get some Blu-rays. I will gladly pick up this set as long as the transfers are great.
I have read that Fellowship doesn't look bad but it looks pretty terrible for about half of its running time. The most egregious example lies in Gandalf and Bilbo's conversation at Bag End. I have yet to see a BD transfer look worse than that. Fellowship is my favorite of the trilogy and I was extremely pissed that it looked so terrible. The Two Towers looks great for the first 30 or so minutes and then it takes a nosedive. Return of the King looks great so that one may not even be redone, assuming any remastering is performed. I have since traded in the theatrical editions for other BDs. |

Got my FOTR last night. I kinda regret going overboard with the "green scare" and holding out on these. But I got them for $40, so it's all good.
Watched up until Frodo gets the Ring. So far I've only noticed a slight lack of contrast or some "black crush" as the pros call it. The sky isn't as blue as I'd like it to be, but other than that... nothing! All colors look genuine (to me) and I couldn't spot the green on the "Fellowship of the Ring" text in the beginning--although I could tell there was a tiny push to the green channel mainly because I was looking for it in the Shire scenery. I kept thinking about that side-by-side comparison video on YouTube and, man, that doesn't seem like an accurate representation at all. Detail is fine and looking great, but perhaps turning down the contrast/gamma on the entire movie was a bad move and will be rectified in future sets. It should be.. I want FOTR to "pop" like TT/ROTK. Keep in mind, my TV is definitely not professionally calibrated. I used a list of recommended settings on the Internet. I think I'll do some more research and tweak it a bit more. Last edited by JamesKurtovich; 12-21-2012 at 02:12 PM. |

After tweaking some of my settings, I noticed I might have had my contrast set a bit high. This basically minimized the tint. Now I can clearly see the green title in the beginning of the film and the picture gets much darker once I use recommended settings from avsforum or another source.
I think I might just use "Torch" mode when watching FOTR--or just increasing 'dynamic contrast'. It basically puts a band-aid on this issue by making things brighter than usual and giving everything a little more "pop." Last edited by JamesKurtovich; 12-21-2012 at 04:13 PM. |

After some deliberation, I've gone back to my normal settings. It's a bit darker and/or greener in certain scenes, but it looks more natural than an artificially brightened picture, except in those scenes. On a good note, I love the audio. Few of my BDs have given my speakers this much work to do! Last edited by JamesKurtovich; 12-21-2012 at 04:48 PM. |

I think the 1st set now has expired Digital Copies. Looking on Amazon I'm not sure if the newer set has DC's to start with, as they're not on the case with the customers pictures. Everything else is the same I think content-wise unless they have money off The Hobbit or other offers inside.
